@rodcrippler As phrased by my director (since we will be playing an arrangement of this in a band I'm in), the Flugelhorn has a mellower sound compared to the trumpet.
@rodcrippler one is conical, and the other is cylidrical. Which means the piping stays the same the entire way through until the end where the bell flares out. Compared to the other one, the bore gets larger as the instrument gets longer. Much like a tuba compared to a trombone. Flugel gives a much darker and rich sound, which trumpet gives off a much more brighter texture.
@dylannoble92 like: trumpet is louder, but flugelhorn is more layered??? I guess you can hear it when comparing Chet Baker to Wynton Marsalis or rturo Sandoval:
I love this and have it in my player often. I "mood dance" to the long version and recommend it to my friends. Dance out the tears, the joy, the hope and come away healed by the wonderful music of Chuck Mangione....Camille
@868hbl5 I've always learned that Flügelhorn is the german name of bugle (also in english with "u" for the german "ü") ... what's the difference between these two instruments ? If found no differences ... even in the website of bugle fabricant manufacturer ...
got to see him in concert on his feel so good tour ! he played nashville,tn. at the opry house. itwas great!!! i still have several of his albums including live at the hollywood bowl. great music chuck ! WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM ,AGAIN!!!!!!
There has never been anyone else who writes this kind of music like Chuck Mangione did, so exciting and powerful. It's jazz but drives like rock, remembering the days when this came out, it was and still is so amazing.
I cant Believe that 28 persons dont like this wonderfull song, I'm Sure they Dont know what really music is good, not like the noise of today!! This is MUSIC!! Great Song!!
Did anyone else notice the incredible shred on that guitar? It takes a talented leader to share the stage front with other talented musicians And allow them the spotlight.
Why does pop get so much hate? So what if they aren't "hardworking musicians"? It's meant to be fun. Guys like you need to chill out and just be more open.
I'm open. I like everything. Rap, hip hop, pop, rock, jazz, swing, blues, punk, and every form of metal, techno... everything.
@satisfyingyoursearch I have the "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" I'm on my third copy. Love love love and there has never been anyone else in all these years that compares to what Mangione did. Amazing music! I still listen to it in my car.
I heard this (Live at the Hollywood bowl album, "Evening of Magic")) on four floor speakers 100 watt stereo amp, a Dynamic range expander and equalizer and shaped the music so it was just right. Then I turned the volume up and this sounded fantastic; powerful and clear. His horn was magnificent.
Thanks for posting this! LOVE the song - fell in love with it the first time I heard it back in the '80s - when a co-worker lent me the album. Of course, my last name is "Sanchez" - so another great reason to love this.
This is kind of a bland dorian melody-- with lots of sustained notes. That in itself is just fine, but I think the arrangement is especially lacking in that many times the music cries out for background fills during these sustained events and that never happens (ie: opening tryp. solo). I do like the bridge much better--with the stepwise melodic movement; it's far more active harmonically (it is also not dorain). Anyway, nicely performed by all, with an especially interesting guitar solo.
i don't know if anyone posted this, but Chuck made the fluglehorn popular. There were others like Miles Davis. But he was the on the used it the majority of the time.
minstrels magic minstrels flowing through the universe, billowing through eternity, planet nine in the solar system twenty nine, alien insanity, good evening, I know everthing.
@silfner1 Different instrument....and Maynard was the Van Halen of trumpet, no doubt...The Flugelhorn is softer..more mellow....Sometimes Maynard "over-played"
@mjw9363 I realize they are different instruments. But still, any trumpet player could play a flugelhorn just like any flugelhorn player can play a trumpet, so that's where my comparison came in.
@lampboy2 I would actually contest that they're "not different at all." Yes, the key is the same, and the fingerings are the same, but that's about it. The tone concept for flugelhorn is completely different from trumpet--too many trumpet players play the flugelhorn exactly like they do the trumpet, and the tone they get out of it sounds more or less like a trumpet. Mangione's tone stands out as one of the best examples of real flugelhorn tone.
I played this in my Jazz band last year, the other week, I was playing my guitar and start strumming the beginning bassline lick. I'm now making a heavy metal version of this song. Why? Cause I want to.
I wanted to hear the original, because my bands performing four of Chuck Mangione's songs. This one, Feel so good, Land of Make Believe and Bella I think. But yeah hearing this amazing musician I can see why we are using his music.
