I've seen Gladys and the pips just about all over the world. from New Jersey to London. And no matta in the world i seen them THEY WERE JUST F KING AMAZING
Yes, the crowds were mellower then. I was one of them. The screaming didn't start til the end of the song or the performer did something truly smokin'.
Audiences in the 70s were mellow, but paid the money for their music. Acts go broke now because "fans" "share" pirated songs. Today everyone wants to share a view of their buttcrack and call it "soul." Keep your as-soul to yourself. The Pips were disciplined, the lyrics often profound, most of the comments I see here are long on attitude and short on really knowing their music.
I just don't get WHY audiences back in the 70s were so frigin LAME.. They show no response to the active, LIVE, powerful energy that was happening on stage. I was only a kid at time, but damn, if I had been a member in the crowd at the time of this gig, seeing, hearing and watching Gladys & Pips play LIVE... i would have been jumping & singing my azz off,.. ENJOYING THE SHOW... Thank God, things have changed.. yikes.
I was a kid in the 70s too. But remember that high quality acts were just the norm in those days. The crowds were a bit spoiled in that they expected this type of professional precision from everybody! They had James Brown, 4 Tops, Temptations, Jackson 5, etc., etc.
Gladys Knight & The Pips' first bombastic hit, after leaving MOTOWN-Records - a smash! In that year I was leaving my home to move to another city and then I found my lover/friend for a lifetime: Very good memories at all!
Oh, Gladys! That fiery, soulful rasp. You just want to shout "Hallelujah!"when she sings. That kind of fire can only come from the soul. Then, you throw in the Pips' razor-tight choreography. Man, this could be grounds for a mild heart attack!
This has to be the funkiest shit I've ever seen in my life. My grandparents loved GKATP when I was a little boy.(and the OJays). Were the Pips steppin' this shit out or what?
This is my favorite GNTP song. There's something about this version- maybe it's the distorting bass- but it just *rocks so hard!* Thank you for posting this. I'm so inspired.
I always love hearing "Imagination" live because I am kind of unhappy with the recording quality of the studio track. There is something very muted about the sound compared to the beatiful clarity of the other tracks on that album.
This is music!

Audiences were different then - more respectful of the singer - let everyone hear and then go crazy!!
