Great Kit, my only additions I would make without compromising the thinness of the kit would be a piece of moleskin, a little duck tape wrapped around a gift card, and 25' of tarred bank line or other lightweight cordage. Might put a couple of fishhooks in the foil with the strikers too.
i have an altoids kit.If i were you i would put a fishing lure and some string and snare wire in there.trapping is high percentage if you have experience.practice i am a trapper and i eat wild game all the time.I have to keep alot in the freezer cause i catch too much stuff sometimes.
If anyone knows where to get these water bags (this specific kind) I would like to buy one or two. I will pay $20 each. Must be new / never used.Years ago I seen them in the local Army Surplus store for a few dollars, but never picked them up. I wish I had.
PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE SURVIVAL WATER BAGS AND ARE WILLING TO SELL IT.
Willing to trade 1 brand new filter straw as seen in this video, 1 flint rod, a 1/2" round by 4" magnesium rod, and a 9 LED flashlight (all new) or $20 for 1 of these bags. The 1st offer is indeed better but if you'd rather have cash that's cool too. Thanks guys!
Man All You Need Is Some Duct Tape, A Little Gauze, Some Super Glue, and Rubber Gloves. That's All You Need For A First Aid Kit. I Actually Have all that in My Altoid Can
Would you sell me or two of those aircrew survival kit water bladders? I will send you money by money order or paypal. I really want one and have searched everywhere for one. Thanks!
@delta69alpha - Been still looking for the water bladders with the red cap shown in your video. If you happen to have an extra one or two I would love to buy them off you. I can't find them anywhere and need something like for my mini-kit. I also see you live in Southeast Idaho. I do too. Where abouts do you live?
@Jollyprez - Yeah I have seen them in local sporting good shops, but I'm not impressed at all with them. I would buy for $3 but not $10. I dont like that they dont fold 100% flat. They are highly over priced. There are companies online that sell Disposable Drink Flasks that are made to the same standards as the Platypus and just as good. Look up "SHARK SKINZZ Disposable Soft Plastic Flasks". I found a 3 pack on ebay for less than $10 (for 3 of them). There are others too. Just not what I want.
Excellent! I couldn't tell ya how many times I've re-packed my ruck sack. I have more room for food, and water. Redundancy is the key! I'm onto the vacuum seal deal as well...it really consolidates a load. K-I-S-S, that's all to remember. lol. gotta have the multi-tool of course..haha.
I would but this is a kit to supplement what i already have on me. Fishing/snaring for food is great if i will be stuck in one spot for days or weeks and have the time and material around to construct numerous traps/snares. The kit is to make sure i have water, shelter to get me through 1-2 days of being hurt/lost or broke down not set up a semi permanent camp . Skill set has a bunch to do with what i do and dont carry compared to most.
@gowwe12 An EDC really doesn't need food to be covered because of how long a human can survive without food. Water however and basic shelter are far higher priorities.
The straws can be purchased online or at outdoor shops/outlets. As for a knife. my EDC is a knife and multitool. SO unless i lose my pants i'll have a knife on me.
excelent point . i see a lot of guys posting their kits on here and some have six or more poket knives and "rambo" knives . needless weight . pocket knives are meant to be in your pocket .
I was wondering, what kind of bag is that that you have it all in. I'm always looking for new and/or better ways to carry my equip. I've been using and altoids box as a casing and before anyone starts in on me, I have been using the same box for yrs and yrs now, long before it became mainstream. But what kind of canvas bag is that? and where can I get one?
it is part of older issue air crew survival kits. I came across some at a surplus store many years back. You could substitute a platypus 1 liter for it. they are about the same size or a tad bigger. They make them as small as 16 oz's as well and are pretty cheap.
i hate matches. wind will ruin any attempt at making a fire and if you only have 5-6 matches, your options are limited. a Bic brand lighter ( mini or regular ) would be a great addition to your kit, while keeping the weight down. great video, keep them coming!
Where'd you get the mini bladder? That's real neat to have.
Watching it I couldn't help but think of a couple inexpensive small things you could add that would be very useful but wouldn't inflate the kit too much.
1. Plastic trash bag - rain protection, shelter, ground cover, etc.
2. Vaseline&cotton ball in foil - light, fire starting, lifesaving heat.
I got some of the items through a trade at a survival camp out in "southern Idaho". Instead of PJ balls, try soaking them in melted candle wax, less mess, burn longer! As i said this kit is made to be worn as supplement to my main rig or kit on my back at the time. Be it my BOB ,hunting day pack or line 2 gear. I have second "stand alone" mini kit that has all these items and MORE , all items that you've made mention of. Thanks again for the comments and the rates!!!!!
I'll try the wax balls makes sense. I really like the size of your kit though. I've tried making a mini kit in an altoids tin but likewise found they are too small to cover basic needs like shelter and water. Keep up the good work brother! Your vids help educate and motivate ppl.
Thanks for sharing your kit Bob. I am a little surprised that it doesn't have fishing gear or snares in it to catch food though.
Funny of you to mention an Altoids tin kit, I just thought of that (all by myself) the other day. I didn't know that was kind of a standard thing (guess I'm not as clever as I first thought).
I'm going to shamelessly copy all your good ideas, hope you don't mind :)
This kit mostly to cover your basic needs. That is mostly the sole reason its lacking snares/fishing gear. The Altoids kits contain a mess of items that are similar to normal mini kits. Most of which are based on being " lost" per say for days on end but are lacking in the areas of shelter and water, both items that you can not do with out! You will succumb faster to the elements and dehydration faster than you will starve.
RS21- yes it can be used that way as it is rubber lined.
That's a nice little kit.
