The video rocks! And like posters fpmluser and js1268, the bassist stole the show without uttering a word verbally. By turning his back on the audience and bopping to the beat reminded me of Miles Davis' stage presence and was super cool. The horn section and the drummer made their presence felt in this jam session also. I tried to find out the bassist name in this clip to no avail. I am certain the bass player in this clip isn't the great James Jamerson. JJ was smaller than this cat.
wow with what looks like a high school band playing the 4 tops seem so much larger than life in this video....thanks for posting the 4 tops were the real deal...
A million years ago in a suburb of Detroit, Levi Stubbs and Smokey Robinson, arrived at my home (unannounced) to sing me "Happy Birthday!" It's a long story but the thrill never left me!
I swear this video moves me every time I see it. Levi is so powerful...his voice, his presence, his essence is off the chart. Not too many 31 years old, like myself, that I know can relate or appreciate great music from the originators of soul.
I've always loved this song. There's a kind of darkness about that sound that i'm not sure you get with any other artists. Seven rooms of gloom is the same. Love how there are two songs going on if you only listen to the backing singers. Brilliant.
This is an amazing video. What was amazing about these performers is that they actually worked the audience without a million stage props and fire works going off. They could sing and entertain. I miss Levi, Obie and Renaldo. Duke carry on.
It is always a pleasure to watch these vintage videos. There were no trick visuals, or female stage dancers. The singers of their day would rise or fall based on talent.
man isn't that the truth. This is music, how it's meant to be. All this new crap like rap with a catchy beat coming out now is garbage. What's really sad is some of the younger black guys my age I work with have NO IDEA who these older artists are! Like the Platters, percy sledge, etc.
this is the kind of soul music that needs to make a come back i want to hear people wail and people play real instruments. the thing i love about the four tops is they sounded exactly the same on stage and in a recording booth much like many of the artists of the 60s up until the late 80s even michael jackson althoguth he did have to lip sync at times so he could dance when he did stand and sing ballads like man in the mirror it sounded jus tlike or better than the recording.
I grew up a 70s rocker, but remember standing in the back of my folks plymouth in the 60s singing Tops songs at the top of my lungs! Still have a BIG soft spot for them!
Tops, Marvin, Sam & Dave, 5th Dimension, Otis, man I still think it's the best. Soul whether Memphis or MoTown was the joy of music. But Levi's voice sets them above all others!
Ahhh, they brought the creative HDH music to life like no others!
Thank you so much for this! I was lucky enough to see the Tops at the Odeon Newcastle back in the day. This brings back so many memories. They called him Golden Throat. What a voice..........incredible.
Check out Mary Wells, ( My Guy, & Two Lovers )and Smokey's Goin' To A Go Go ! My favorite. Can't forget Otis Redding "I Been Lovin' You " and go back a little further for Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. If you haven't already you'll fall in love with Jackie.(Baby Work Out). The End. Bye
Oh, I know all of them, except Jackie W. ? I watched one video of him...and I know that stars like Micheal Jackson, and everyone loved him...and says that he was the performers, Performer!
It ended with the begginning of Disco . But,,, I just played your Supremes , Set Me Free, God ! You are Good ! You sound like Diana Ross, and on key. There's a reason for everything and I think you're not just singing those songs to pass the time. Keep at it ! You've got talent and you're young. I saw a Mtown Revue in Hoboken NJ 2 yrs ago, I think they were from Philly, and they blew everyone away !
Thanks so much...I'm glad that I got your comment...my brother was just now teasing me saying that i couldn't sing, and how he couldn't believe that I posted to youtube! (he's a rapper/producer) LOL...I wish that I knew when shows like that were around, I always miss them? But thanks for your great comment!
Wow! Once again you've come up with another real gem Vanessa. This proves beyond doubt that the Tops could really cut it live - even back then. Levi certainly was one of the great soul voices, wasn't he? Once again enormous thanks for another excellent post!
Great to see the "Tops" truly in their prime - Thanks for posting!

RnB /"soul" or what record companies want to classify it as just has too much "gangsta" and "crunk" bass in it
it all seems to be missing that funk and cool cat jazz club basslines
