Spike Lee reworked it for this movie, and did a masterful job. I guess it's up to me to upload the "Night of the Hunter" version, unless anyone cares to beat me to it. If you do, please let me know.
This scene is a parphrase from "The Night of the Hunter," 1955, starring Robert Mitchum: "The story of good and evil? H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? These fingers has veins that run straight to the soul of man. The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and I'll show you the story of life. Those fingers, dear hearts, is always a-warring and a-tugging, one agin t'other."
Maybe its the bad neighborhood or a rotten childhood but when he got choked I found myself not emotionally attached, since he didnt really help himself to back out of a situation that could be avoided. Wont go on any longer, since it IS a spike lee film after all.
its time when we never have the chance to back out of a situation, black men dont have that previlage.,u just dont get it. i belive ignorant is your middle name, this movie is a watered down version of what really happens. im white and understand, nothing goes on in mayberry huh,i wish your soul could be placed in an average blackmans body in your next life time, if its a such thing, trust me, you'd see things different.its not makebelieve
I bought this movie on vhs longgg ago and i like it alot but a lot of the characters here are over written, like radio raheem for example. I understand that they needed certain lines and "attitudes" to be expressed in the movie but I felt they could have used another character to play out this scene. I really felt that radio Raheem has no redeeming characteristics for me to really care about him.
wtf? this isnt stupid - its classic. and yes spike lee was ahead of his time. this is one of the best movies in cinematic history, and along with "a clockwork orange," has some of the most perfectly staged, shot+ edited sequences of color cinematography used to the hilt!
few movies use color cinematography anywhere near its full cinematic potential like "do the right thing" does. also radio raheem's monologue is an urban, color-film update of robert mitchum's love/hate monologue in "night of the hunter." brillliant! masterfully concieved
great film but during this scene I couldn't help but think it was like something for some sort of insane sesame street episode.

just checked out NIGHT OF THE HUNTER with Robert Mitchum. He does do a decent job as ww4udavid said. But I think they're unique in their own way.
