I'd like to see a test pilot roll a B787 these days. It would be inspiring.

Test pilots have an excellent understanding of what an airplane, any airplane is capable of, that is why they are called "test pilots". Alvin Johnson was no idiot in the air.

The Dash 80 was an overbuilt testbed that Boeing had built. Tex is a DAMNED good pilot and he knew what he was about. He got an administrative reprimand out of it and Boeing got massive orders for the 707 that descended from the Dash 80.

The roll scared the crap out of everyone on the ground but inside the plane it was one G towards the floor of the plane. A friend of mine flew as radio engineer on board and he recalled that Tex was a cool as he could be, hanging off his straps, upside down.
