This cat seems to be in a shelter. Clearly it's been through something traumatic. I'd reckon that something about the sounds they were making rekindled a memory of the cat being taunted or threatened while being cornered.

This is typically the behaviour of a cat that feels threatened but can't retreat. If defence is not an option, then the cat may switch to offence.

This cat is more in fear, than in anger or lunacy. SIgh, many people don't understand cats and make bad judgements.

My Bengal has psychiatric problems, and she only spent a week in a pound. Her "tick" is that when she gets stressed, she pulls her fur out. She didn't do this prior to going in the pound.* Pounds are ///highly/// traumatic for /any/ animal.

But, because she was microchipped (as all pedigree animals should be), the pound called her and the breeder retrieved her. Then, she re-sold the animal to cover the costs of the pound, shots, etc. ($100, rather than $800-$1k+).
