  • @ISmellLikeASexyGuy Please learn music theory and basic music terminology before commenting on the pitch of someone's voice. Not playing the melody with the exact same pitches as the original does not mean it is out of tune. The melody is harmonized differently than the original, but he does not use any notes out of the key so neither you nor I have any idea what you mean.

  • @zachindie you mad? is this guy your uncle or something? I know lots about music... I wasn't referring to his unconventional choice for the melody in the chorus, I was referring to his inability to hit the notes he chose.

    FLAT.

I don't have anything against him, I make mistakes too.

  • I love this its fantastic

  • @ISmellLikeASexyGuy just because the melodic structure is different than what your ear wants to hear over that chordal pattern, doesn't mean it's out of tune. Study theory and music and you'll probably begin to understand, unless your just a troll, in which case, I'm sorry you wasted my time.

  • Man, gotta go to Australia: Cat Empire + John Butler + Tommy Emmanuel. Who gives more?

  • pure love for this guy!! Just raw awesome talent!!!

  • muy bueno

  • TABSS!!! WHERE THE ONLY ONE SUCKDICK

  • @zizibab Open C tuning. Intro/Verse- 779000(or bar all the 7th fret, then slide it down to 335000, then up to 557000. The picking pattern goes 6 string 5string 6string 4string tap 6string 5 string. The first time he does a riif it ends with hitting the sixth string open then picking the 5th string 5th fret and sliding up to the 7th fret, hammering on to the 8th and sliding back down to the 5th. The second time he just hits the 6th string open. Chorus- 335000*2 then 55700*2

  • @tony420wilson Yous a bitch tony

  • nice cover.. solo was a bit average

  • Back before he went full retard.

  • @MrNickNamez This is from before he fired 2/3rds of his trio, got a haircut and started writing disposable pop music.

  • @BibleStorm Fuck You! You are obviously a retard if you think his music is pop. My best bet is your the dumbass who only knows him from his song Ocean. I have all his albums, can play all his songs, and I guarantee you he is not a "pop" artist. He's a "FUCKING BADASS" artist. Now shut the hell up and realize he is one of very few modern day artist that have a respect for music. I suggest you try and do the same fag.

  • @pierceman1212 You obviously don't know what pop music is. I wasn't comparing him to Rihanna or Kesha or any of those retards, but the fact is that on his recent release he's departed from his blue and roots style that he played on Sunrise Over Sea and is playing forgettable pop-rock music. I will await with great eagerness your next presumptive, abusive and overall useless response.

  • @BibleStorm ^^ .. i love john butler, especially sunrise over sea.. it´s a shame they split up, they were like three kings playing at once... i did not know he fired them, do you know why?

  • @MrNickNamez No, I don't know why, or even if he fired them. Maybe they left off their own free will. He was certainly better off with them, though.

  • @BibleStorm I am highly aware of what pop music is and I can tell you right now the music is not forgettable pop rock music. If you have any respect for the amount of work John puts in his work I'm pretty sure it's quite obvious his songs have alot of meaning about war and politics. John was in the Austrailian Army which makes sense, and your not realizing he has always put his feelings first when it comes to music. I'd do anything, was the only song he took a different approach on

  • @BibleStorm as stated in his interviews, it was expiremental at first and it got posative responses. The rest of that album was the same feel as usual, and I'm pretty sure it was difficult to go along with the same feel when his new trio memebers had different style instruments. It only proves how much better off he is when he can learn to expand his range of music at that good of quality.

  • Sounds like Black Jesus by Everlast. haha

  • john mayer version is better.

  • @TheSkater699 jon gomm better version idoit

  • The comment below is dumb.

  • awsome

  • amazing song

  • AUSSIES!!!!!! PROUD TO BE ONE MYSELF

  • @wobblechops1 YESSS

  • bob marley v2.0

  • great, but the drums are 2 loud in the end!

  • man he's a rasta hardcore, here's a bottle full of papers since i'm sure you already learned how to grow weed

  • I love this version :) So nice and simple but powerful at the same time.

Does anyone else think that it looks like John is about to break his ring finger each time he plays that chord on the 4th position? It just looks painful ><

  • I love it when ppl complain... Makes me laugh that ppl are waisting there time picking out the bad things of a video (in there mind) instead of typing somthing els in the search bar and finding somthing they may like lol! Fuckin hysterical!!!

  • Great solo

  • Hi !

    I play this cover too.

What do you think about it ?

    Have a great day !

  • @olidbc is this on cd?

  • @pob1989 Sadly no. Would be great if it was.

  • @pob1989 No it is not, unless you want The Police version.

  • Comment removed

  • @pob1989 This is available on the 2005 CD: Triple J - Like A Version - Volume 1

  • @pob1989 better version on 'like a version' by triple J

  • This song wasn't really my cup of tea. But I'll thumb it up anyway, because John Butler Trio is awesome.

  • They are clearly playing this in a different key. On purpose. Just enjoy it.

  • @Suomioz78 they're playing in a harmonized key, down a 5th, I can sing the original melody harmonizing, just difficult with the tempo.

  • If you don"t have anything nice to say, then don't say it...just move on to something that inspires you. People bashing is so harmful.

I love John Butler's personalization of the music he plays, he plays it that way -cuz it moves him and he is imparting his feelings thru his medium. I hope you're never sitting in front me, when i play my guitar ZIMWinkler.

  • @spandexballet if it wasn't for all the bullshit arguments on here, and your misspelling of my YouTube name, I might know what you were talking about. I have done nothing but talk good about this video and share it to everyone I know, so the fact that you're bashing me is harmful to your credibility.

  • To the people saying he's out of tune: yes and no.

If I'm not mistaken, as with lots of their songs, they don't tend to follow the modern western minor/major opposition. (John even admits to just playing guitar and hoping it sounds cool. If it's good but unconventional, screw conventions.)

In medieval Europe there were about 7 keys as opposed to our two. Which is why some choral singing sounds out of tune, because the tune itself is unlike what you and I are used to.

I could be wrong, though xD

  • ok not to diss him but he cant really sing but he is awesome at playing that guitar

  • @SuperCoconutpie if you listened to some of his other songs, he CAN sing, this is more for fun than a vocal showcase.

  • Why can't I find this tab in the correct tuning? I found the one in open C but it doesn't sound right. Can anyone help please?

  • cooool! =D

  • 3:27 :D

  • Whoever questions this wonderful artist, please look up "OCEAN" by the john Butler trio, live.

  • @jjccllgg That's definitely the best one :')

  • Gah this guy is amazing, stop comparing and just listen, feel it, love it. That is all there is and if you don't then feel free to spend your time elsewhere doing other things.

  • I like the reggae sound he added to this Police classic.

  • @ISmellLikeASexyGuy Say what you want, but every one of the bands albums have reached platinum-status and you're sitting on your ass commenting on the mans singing on YouTube.

He's human and he makes mistakes, but if he wanted to sing it exactly like Sting did, then he'd just be Sting. He's John Butler. To you, and everyone else commenting on his "out-of-tune" singing, shut up.

  • @Melchary music is math. I'm not suggesting that cover songs must sound exactly like the original recordings in order to have any value, but I AM suggesting that a musician should use the correct notes for the key in which he is playing the song. I didn't say it was bad, I said it was out of tune... that is not an opinion, it is a fact. why do I have to shut up?

p.s: the only ingredient that is needed for a platinum-selling album is people who are willing to buy it.

  • @ISmellLikeASexyGuy you sire are deaf thank u for ur time

  • @ISmellLikeASexyGuy Yes, covers shouldn't be the same as the original, that's why they need the same tone. Genius logic. Bravo good sir.

  • that was so amazing! i didnt know zach galifinakis could play bass!

  • He's not singing out of tune... it's just not a straight melody.

  • Is it me or is he singing out of tune. I dont know music theory but i play guitar and listen to alot of various music genres. It sounds like his voice was off... anyone who knows lemme know if my suspicions are correct.

  • A nice combination of Bob Marley and Kurt Cobain.

  • so Jesus is back and has dreads? nice

  • @ZMWinkler you shouldnt be joking around like that about the creator of all humanity

  • @TherealCamaroman I live in America where we have the freedom of speech and expression. if you don't like that fuck you, but you are allowed to say whatever you want about it, so thank you for expressing yourself, and I hope you're mind-fucked by my contradictory sensible openness.

  • @ZMWinkler You say that but you saying 'fuck you' to him for expressing himself in the rights of freedom of speech, wheres the freedom in that? But in saying that I respect your perpesctive on the matter and will not fight you over your own opinion as you have every right to say what you think. But to 'TherealCamaroman' it is only a joke and there is no reason to get angry really. Peace

  • @TheJimmyStoner my freedom of speech allows me to say fuck you for disagreeing with his views and allows me to say fuck you for trying to stop me from saying fuck you, so fuck you, and have a nice day :)

  • @ZMWinkler well at least you finished on a positive note ;)

  • @TherealCamaroman Creator? is that what you call "god" ? cause you need to get with reality and realize there isnt one... look in the sky and see the stars were one of trillions, do the math.

  • @TherealCamaroman jesus created humanity? thats news to me

  • @ZMWinkler haha....but I hope Noah doesnt come back and have to build an ark....

  • So many people in their comments seem to forget one thing. Music is ART. Musicians are artists. And as such, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... some "see" the picture, and just like a piece of art, some don't see it, and prefer something that others fail to "see" any beauty in. I appreciate John Butler for his individual take on a classic song. And I admire his musicianship. Full stop. Life is too short to complain about a video - move on and click something you do like.

  • @MusicBreathesLife I completely agree. well said.

  • @MusicBreathesLife truest comment ever! :D

  • @MusicBreathesLife i had to reply :) in fact i totally agree with you, just its the fact, life is the longest thing you'll ever do actually :) regards :)

  • @MusicBreathesLife -LIKE-

  • I would have loved to have seen him in his busking days.

  • oh no, its not enough to sing like a raggaman. practice singing

but nice idea keep it up

  • @Aristocat2 lol thats just how John Butler sings, look at some of his other stuff, it's his own style :)

  • That was pretty hard to listen to. The singing was horribly out of key for most of the song.

  • @MrRandyRhoads if it was in the same key as you're used to the song being in, you'd be bitching about how he straight copied the song. just open your mind and appreciate different styles not just mainstream crap

  • @MrRandyRhoads That doesn't even matter. Bob Dylan did the same thing back in the day, why can't someone explore their talent and sound? Music isn't all about perfection :)

  • Класс!!!

  • Why is Zach Galifianakis playing bass?

  • hes a really good guitar player but he could make the song better .. :P but hes awesome anyway

  • imagine John putting out a reggae album like this , good cover

  • holy shit! i never new john butler was all over youtube!!! hes amazing

  • MiNdFuCk!681!%@&!(#%!&@

  • And that , my dear friends, is what is deemed "a classic rendition"...

  • wow tooo good

  • Love this version

  • 1st: you're family is sick

2nd: that's the point of a different version, everything different unless the lyrics..

3rd: they say he's out of tone comparing with the original, but they mustn't know about music, because all the melody is different here witch obligates the vocals to be different too..

4th: WHO ARE THAT GUYS TO CRITICIZE ONE OF THE BEST GUITARISTS AND MUSICIAN IN THE WORLD?!?!

  • @bompteress Covers sucks..

  • just eargasmed all over the floor!

  • this guy is the man!

  • WHOA!

  • Excelent Cover of an excelent Song

  • your all retarted, john butler fukin rapes at guitar. All those people who are like OMG eric clapton is the best and jimi hendrix is the best at guitar, your retarted. they were the best in their time. but now people are progressing and what john butler does is his own thing and he has crazy amounts of skill. his guitar in this song isnt to technical because its a song, a chilled song hes playing. johnny b for life

  • He plays guitar well but gosh he can't sing :P

  • I LOVE both John Butler Trio and the police but I'm not really keen on this version... John can do (and has already done) better !

  • I'ts in the name

  • flat out awsome

  • it's kind of stupid that there is no credit given to the band THE POLICE for the song that they originally wrote. it's not even in the tags for this video. wtf. ANYBODY WATCHING THIS. JOHN BUTLER IS AWESOME BUT HE DID NOT WRITE THIS SONG. i actually have to say i don't care for this interpretation of the song much either. he could get sued by sting for this. honestly.

  • @jclmedb27 No he couldn't at no point does he claim he wrote it, he didn't personally upload the video either so stop talking out your arse

  • @jclmedb27 Well... He did make a tolerable song into something beautiful.. That's just my opinion.

  • great guitarist

  • I'm sorry, but that was pretty darn bad.

  • Why haven't I heard this before?

  • can't wait till he comes to ottawa in july :)

  • Omg this sounds just like that one Rolling Stones song!

  • the guy is pure genius a talent clearly wasted on you, and if you heard his vocals on the letterman show when he played zebra live well you would just look downright silly

  • it kinda looks like hes got open c but a half step lower than usual, cause it makes the slide/pull-off thing at the end of the intro a lot easier. idk correct me if im wrong

  • @tivoguyis44 :& I guess I do not understand very well. But well, forget it there my friend. ;) Moves well.

  • AND HES PLAYING THAT ON ELEVEN STRINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is really nice, reminds me of Written in the Stars by Tinie Tempah

  • 108 dislikes heterosexuals

  • @AndreMachado87 what? Disliked by straight people? Do you mean HOMOsexuals?

  • absolutely brilliant

  • I think that this man fell from the sky in the future with the knowledge acquired by one thousand years ...

    :|

  • @Marko77777771 Word!

  • @Marko77777771 or maybe he just covered a good song?

  • @Marko77777771 Or maybe he just practiced really, really hard. Keep at it bro. You might be able to get there one day.

  • @NationalEXE yo my bro maybe i will but no ordinary man can play like this John Butler is genius for me...XD

  • Thumbs up for not living in the world where we all have to have the same music taste.

  • this is just epic. this is better the real one

  • 107 people dont have any hint of proper talented music....fuck off back to lady crap crap and all the rest of manufactured bullshit teeniebopper pop shit.

    you wont be missed.

  • Nice cover of this song and I really like the way John brings his unique vocals/musical prowess to this piece - it's not just imitative...

  • This sounds nothing like the original, but I like it.

  • /watch?v=qy3mdyGB_bc

  • 107 users didn't get the message!!

  • /watch?v=qy3mdyGB_bc

  • is that a black upright bass? :) great cover!!!

  • this song is... , thank u

  • 2:53-3:21 sounds like hes hitting the strings hard and he looks frustrated because he cant get the right nottes. lol

  • @ShOwMetHeRoPeS82 well actually this is a solo that is way more than just going up and done some scales

  • @looking4musics yeah i understand that. hes not like most of your average guitarists. he puts feelings first i believe.

  • this is so beautiful! what a great rendition of this song. i just saw another one

with sort of a latin vibe. ck it out. search manteca in a bottle

cool...and listen to the nod to "gilligan's island."
