@m66Sik: A gsd is a great dog! Consider where you are with a yard and space PLUS time for any new dog or puppy. The reward's can be so wonderful. Good luck and research a new pet to fit your life otherwise you might have to fit the pet's life & need's. Condo's, apartments, etc. not so great but then i had my two in a 20 ft. camper. Lot's o outdoor time! lol.

Would y'all recommend a GSD for a new dogowner? I had a beagle when I was very little, but haven't had a dog for 20yrs now. Would a GSD be okay for me? I need a dog for companion and protection.

@66SiK the beagle is for me more difficult to raise then the gsd, if you have the time to train your gsd and play with him, you would have no problems. GSD's are very protective and lovely with theyre owners, you would make a excelent choice by geting a GSD ;)

@msfilmfatale: Yes, i am sure there is protocal however there is protocal for many police duties like reasonable cause on traffic stop's, probable cause on seaches, no racial profiling, no drug use, no lying before a judge, etc.. I've seen ALL these not properly followed and NEVER any reprecusion's. A seach for "police shoot dog" is very disturbing on the result's...One i think is a friggin lab, poodle's next? Funny but NOT. Thank you.

The police dog blek is a sad story and feel for the handler. What do we do about all the police needlessly shooting restrained dog's though? Strangle them, not suggesting anything. Lol!

@erich1313sch: I would have asked my Captain if I could put the dog killer in a pen with Dobermans or GSDs and lock the door. The dog killer said that the GSD cornered his brother. Again, this would never have happened if they didn't break into a home to steal property.

@erich1313sch: That was a police dog and its more serious because Blek was doing his job. He did did a chock hold on Blek and strangled him. The kid brought it upon himself. Breaking and entering is a felony. He should have just surrendered. The dog would not have killed him unless ordered to. Blek would have held him until his handler came. I also want to put Michael Vick in a pen with Dobermans to have their way with him.

@erich1313sch : Me too. I love the classic GSD and the soft temperament is great for show but that should be a small percentage of pups imho. A German Shepherd needs to be tough.

@erich1313sch: I almost went to a pet loss bevreavement counselor. They exist here in the US. Vets often refer their grieving clients to them. My Benjamin was really suffering at the end. It was the best thing. I just adored him. This pup looks exactly like him I joke that it is a reincarnation. He was born exactly 7 months after Benjamin passed.

@erich1313sch: It was a police dog named Blek. These teenagers were robbing a house and the police came and the officer sent Blek to catch him. One of the teenagers put the dog in a chock hold and strangled him. This would not have happened if he hadn't been stealing in the first place. That dog was 5 years old and beautiful! There is a video of it on Youtube from the Texas news program. The officer who was his handler was broken down over it.

@erich1313sch: I know there are some breeders who only produce the classic Old style German Shepherd. The larger muscular dogs without a sloping back and hip problems. I support breeders of that kind. There was Czech German Shepherd who was killed in duty in Houston over 2 years ago that looked like Captain Von Stephanitz original dog. I was terribly upset about it.

The German captain who created the breed deliberately wanted a very smart dog. It was created to be smart, agile, and a thinking dog. They are also bred specifically as a herder and police dog. Don't mistake it though... these dogs can kill. Their bite is almost as bad as a wolf.

there is a video on here that they tested bite force on gsd rot and a pit they did two test on each dog the rot had the most gsd then the pit.

It's not the bite, it's the smarts behind the bite. Of all the dogs out there, ONLY the German Shepherd has the smarts needed to do ALL THE THINGS they do so well. Guide dog for the blind, guard dog, companion, military, police dog, actor, etc. These are the best dogs in existence. All others are wannabes,

Yeah, you are right... It is very hard to know what is true, around this. But I think that it varies a lot, in terms of shepherds. Then there is a breed that may vary considerably between different individuals..in terms of size and temperament. (I've heard numbers of up to 800 lbs) but it is probably difficult to make accurate measurements. I mean to get the dog to actually bite for full....

@queenizi i think 800lb's is too much, maybe a gsd can bite with 500lb's of pressure but 800 is too much, even lions cant bite so hard,,, and often it depends on of which bloodline the gsd came from, a gsd like grym bites much harder then a gsd like maya,, and a DDR gsd bites even harder

Yeah..we think 800 is to much too... Just wanted to mention the number to show how many different figures that abound...

But what we know.. For we have seen it with our own eyes.. Is that our last German Shepherd Ricky took a hard pumped match soccer ball of top quality and pressed it flat..in like two seconds. My sister's Rottweilers could not do this.. But I guess the length of the mouth also plays a role, in this case... : )

@queenizi maybe that rottye was from a showline, but yeah the lenght of the mouth play a role too, but i think gsd's can bite harder then other larger breeds like akita's or maybe inclusive rottyes

GSD are smarter, more athletic, and more of a NATURAL guard dog. Btw, when i was about 19, i was walking the German shepherd i had at the time down my road, and my neighbor's vicious Akita tried attacking me, big mistake! My German shepherd tore that Akita to shreds ripping fur clumps off it's side! GSD all the way!
