@208DIDDERGIRL no chance of that happenening with this mod. that's the power screw mod you're talking about, and i don't have a video on that for that very reason
Just adjusted my afc, and fuel pin and wow I'm honestly impressed, one thing my star wheel only went down 3/4th a turn....any idea? Its a 92. But anyways I'm impressed thanks.
@brandon8968ford sometimes the startwheel does that man, glad you liked the little mods. Not join some forums and do some more tweaking! only reason I didn't post more videos is because I'm afraid people are gonna do this shit with no gauges and melt their engine down.
@91CTD my heated intake has broken on my 1992 Cummins, and its -5 out, but as long as i plug it in she starts great, but if i cant plug it in she starts really hard, am i damaging the engine when i start her like that? im going to put a new heated intake on asap but their not cheap (about $400)
hey man, you know where i can get the banjo bolt at? dodge discontinued the part, cummins says its a bosch pump, and all these different diesel shops dont have it. thanks man
@87norcalyoder You can do away with the banjo setup and just run a fitting right into the pump top, then right into the intake manifold. I know the intake manifold port where the boost line goes into is 1/8 NPT...
Thanks for the quick response. We just got a foot of snow so I'll check the pin again tomorrow. I"m quite sure that the cone is the same all around. However I did see a mark on the cone and rotated it 190 degrees from that, thinking that it would make a difference, but it didn't. Could the pin on my truck be a replacement from stock? Thanks again for your informative videos. Where can I see all of them?
Great video! I tried rotating the fuel pin but the pin is the same all the way around....no ramp or flat sides. Also, when I rotated the starwheel clockwise, it was all the way down already. I have a 93 dodge 250 turbo diesel.
@HolboxTaos You're not looking at the pin hard enough, one side of it has a little bit deeper ramp, it's the side with the metal sticking out on the very bottom, sometimes it tricks your eyes. watch the vid again maybe you'll see it when i point it out
You really could just buy a performance fuel pin and do away with the stock one, for $110 you get 40hp and alot of throttle response that's a good trade off- you can get a performance pin from dennyT , search his site on google.
Well i have 3.73 gears on it with 5 speed manual transmision you think those gears are to low or i need to do something with the injector pump thank's for you help
@chavarrias151 You can't adjust it, someone may have put really really low gears in your truck, Is it an early 91 non intercooled and is it automatic or stick ? your overdrive may not be working if it's an overdrive auto, or if it's an early 91 non intercooled it would have came with a 3 speed auto and 3.07 gears but someone may have put 4.10's or something in not knowing it would only do 60mph afterwards.
you need to back the throttle limiter screw out on the pump...and install a 3200 spring
REMINDER FOR ALL THAT DO THIS: when you go to put your banjo bolt back on dont tighten it to tight because it will break and they are VERY hard to replace
if im looking at a first gen without the little cap on the smoke screw im guessing they tampered with the pump? well hopefully not anyways. nice video
i need some help. i followed thru the video and did eveything right. i power braked it and revved it and no smoke at all. any ideas? should there be any smoke?
@9412vpullin Yea there should be some smoke your torque converter is probably wasted like all of them and isn't loading the engine up, that or the bands in your tranny are out of adjustment. probably a combo of the two
You won't get smoke unless there's a load on the engine, throw a tight aftermarket torque converter in there and you'll get another 100+ ft lb torque to the wheels plus the truck will drive alot different and actually load the engine
@MrJakediesel doing this mod makes it smoke a little before turbo spools, mainly adds low end grunt. and can turn the pump up alll the way and not hurt the engine as long as you don't run it for too long, you need an EGT gauge to measure exhaust temps so you don't melt a piston
True, but you can lower the idle down futher by adjust the 2 idle screws at the back fo the pump, the idle screw on the throttle arm is useless and should be discarded at this point,
I don't own a Dodge Cummings but I have a car that runs this type of pump and have been tweaking it a while. There's plenty of knowledge avaliable and this just scratchs the surface of what can be done. It is a nice easy to digest video.
@jarrus464 I know it just scratches the surface my Dad has a VE powered cummins I set up making 307 RWHP on stock injectors and a stock turbo so I know my way around the pump but runaway and all that doesn't phase alot of people till it happens..they wanna turn up the fuel screw then let THEM read all the warnings and procedures one on of the helpful 1st gen cummins diesel forums on the net.....
There are no 2 screws on OUR pumps.... there is 1 and 1 only idle screw on the back side of the IP
@jarrus464 Turn the star wheel clockwise to lower the starting point of the fuel cone increasing spool up and acceleration........The max fuel screw is one I don't want to get into a in a video because there's so much you can EFF up with that thing......If you advance the timing before adjusting the fuel screw then you can't get to the idle screw to lower the idle and you have to loosen the pump back up and let it come back then bend a wrench to lower the idle after you turn up the screw.
Great vid, I am think about doing to my 93, My only question i have is that i have a automatic truck, Once i remove the TPS does it need to be adjusted when i put it back on, or does it just bolt back on the same way it came off?
tried this on my buddys 93 automatic, when i took the pin out, it hadnt been turned, but the gear ring is as tight as it will go, i turned the pin. no more smoke and minimal power change. any suggestions???
@ultraclassic1987 ether grind the fuel pin down or order you a denny t stage 2 pin and it will change the power big time and advance your timing and then turn your idle up some and turn you boost up and you will get plenty of power and smoke
@johndeereALG Uhm I'm not sure. If an injection pump shop Can't get it then the worlds over. You could just use fittings and some hose to go from the intake manifold to the pump.
@91CTD Thanks for the advice. My shop teacher made me one from a normal bolt. It works fine. But i strongly suggest to anyone that does this not to over tighten the banjo bolt, if it breaks there a bitch to find. But other than that this is a good way to get more power. Thanks though for the advice man.
@Conway11906 I dont think so the part you want more steep is the ramp itself which i dont think a lathe can do something like that. What the aftermarket ones are is a solid chunk that they machine a nice deep smooth ramp into, like a dennyt. This metal for these pins is so hard you have no idea lol.
hey man you seen to know alot i just got 89 dually 2wd that had been sitting for a year and the power steering was empty so i filled it then it stared to turn easier one way but the the other is that the pump thats fucked or box?
i turned the fuel pin on my truck worked great really felt some more get up and go it shaved like 2 seconds off my time at the drags strip but it cut my fuel mileage rite in have went from 1000km a tank to 500km a tank
I have an 89 w250 with the 727 torqueflight automatic w/o overdrive with a cummins recon engine in it. I hate having an auto its my first automatic in awhile. Since it came straight from Cummins the fuel pump is supposedly turned up. The tranny slips a bit, would it be bad to turn the starwheel and the diaphragm? I don't want to blow the tranny, but if I do then I'd probably switch to a getrag 360 or the nv4500. Also, is it true that the fuel pump is already turned up? Thanks for any advice
I have another question for you, Not fuel related, but you seem to no these trucks.
I found a 92 4x4 auto that the owner said the front drivshaft was not in because the u-joint was bad. Truck has had some trans work done and I wonder why he would not put a new u-joint in, can't be that expensive? The pump has been turned up, but how much I have no Idea.
What can I do to check out the 4x4? If you have some advice that would be great.
I need a 4x4 but don't want a ton of problems. Thanks
@4vermont He could mean the u-joints in the ends of the axles ...the ones you have to pull the rotors and hubs to get to......if he didnt put the driveshaft in because the ujoint in the shaft is bad, hes jus lazy cuz thats not too bad
Thanks for all the advice. I an getting ready to purchase a 91-93 4x4 first gen, I want a 5 speed but mostly auto's around here. What do you think about the 518 auto trans? Just a little worried about the auto. I know your truck is a manual, just wondering if you have any advice for me, Thanks
@4vermont Great transmission the only part that sucks is the factory torque converter they put in front of the auto, you can't get any power through those things they just slip alot. The transmission itself is a great unit. Drop the pan as soon as you get it and adjust the bands and raise the pressure in the valve body and it'll be great.
I would recoomend getting an upgraded torque converter from either Goerend transmissions or Suncoast......You won't believe the diff. it' makes in the truck.
@Choochlyman wont' effect it. Depends on your right foot.
when the new wears off and you stop flooring it all the time you'll get same as before, advance the timing like in the other video you're guaranteed at least 1+ mpg
@91CTD Awesome. I actually did this to my truck this morning. I rotated the star wheel one full turn (for some reason it got really tight after 1 turn and wouldn't let me go a full 1 1/2,) and rotated the pin 90 degrees clockwise. I also went ahead and tightened up the smoke screw quite a bit. I noticed quite a bit of difference in just taking off. I can get a pretty good puff of smoke when I start up, but the coal just isn't really rolling for me. Maybe because I don't have a load. Hmm...
91CTD - i also have a 91 cummins 5 speed ive done the same mods to mine, move the fuel pin 90 degrees, turned in the smoke screw, im straight piped out the side and have egt gaues and all that. my question is, and a very simple question. turning the star wheel underneith the afc, is that the same as turning the power screw on the back side kind of underneither there and behind the afc? i can roal some serious coal no prolbem in all gears, like so much black smoke you loose 2 lanes of traffic lol
Hey any cummins fans out there help a newbee here? Got a 92 d250 with auto. I know the autos have a lil less power and heard this was to prevent tranny failure?? I would like to twist it up a little bit as seen in this video but dont want to sacrafice my tranny. Its seen one rebuild some thousands ago before my ownership and seems to be solid and shifts decent with no burnt smell. Any help would be most thankfull
@oldbuckshot You won't hurt it, turn it all the way up if you want I'd worry more about burning up the engine make sure you have guages if you do any more mods than what's in this vid.
The stock torque converter is so sloppy it actually protects the Trans itself.
turning the starwheel down reduces the spring pressure on the afc diaphragm allowing the pin to begin its trravel at a lower boost pressure, allowing for earlier fueling.
cool vid man' ive got a 93 it smokes blue like crazy at cold start, also rough idle like its loading up"flooding" then cleans up as rpm's rise? im thinking injector or fueling issue.. again cool vid
@digzie1 Sounds like air is getting in your fuel system...you may have a small fuel leak somewhere that is letting air into your fuel system at night or something.
@91CTD didnt think of that, its in a 1990 chevy crew cab with stock electric pumps over the mechanical cummins pump, the electric pumps have got to go before winter..
@digzie1 Um that's bad dude. the cummins VE pump can only have about 15 psi going into it or the front seal in the pump will go bad and literally dump fuel into the crankcase.
Checked your oil lately? Any fuel in there? smell or overfilled will be the giveaway.
You need to ditch those electric pumps soon. In a 90 chevy since it was originally TBI gas you're probably putting out 15 psi from that pump, was it originally 6.5 diesel ?
@91CTD it was a 5.7 gas--sb350 i figured pumping diesel through a gas pump is like "sucking molasses through a coffee straw in the winter time" lol it does run out of power at mid range, either way the pumps are coming off ! do they have helper pumps 89' to 93' i had an 84' chevy i converted last year the doner was a 1990 cab & chassie and the fuel tank was missing, the salvage guy told me they had helper pumps,,i never used one on that conversion it ran awsome..
@91CTD no block off, the mechanical pump is there, being pre fed by the electric tank pumps,, i ddnt know if they came w a helper-pusher pump to get fuel to the mechanical pump,,guess not.
@digzie1 Oh ok well theres no pusher pumps the mechanical pump sucks it from the tank and feeds it to the filter head, after it's filtered it''s sent to the injection pump.
right now the electric pumps are probably becoming a restriction in the higher RPM's
@crash25016 every truck is different. you gotta look at the pin. the side that has a deeper ramp is the side you want facing the front of the truck. it has a little lip that sticks out on it...
Is there any trick to adjusting the star wheel? I had a hell of a time moving that thing, managed to rotate it one turn but after that it wouldnt budge....as far as I know it wasn't adjusted by the previous owner(s).....anyway, I didn't want to keep tinkering with it because I was afraid of damaging the teeth....despite that, I rotated the cone 90 degrees and the truck definarely seems quicker.....thanks for the vid, brother. I'm going to adjust my throttle tomorrow.
@spartus09 Sometimes depending where the factory had to set them, they will only go down a turn or 2.
you should just buy the aftermarket fuel pin, you'll get an extra 40hp and quite a bit more seat of the pants power. DENNYT performance makes the replacement fuel pin. $110
great video! so if i would do this to mine i really wouldn't need any guages? I do plan on getting gauges before i do anything else but if i could just do this for a little before i get them it would be great
help i did this and ur throttle adjust vid but when i put the assembly back 2gether i have fuel just running out of the breather vent on back of fuel pump i took back apart several times and tried even putting back where it was but still fuel dripping out of the breather vent please help wat do i do this is my daily driver!
@217414 Sounds like you messed up the o-ring on the fuel pin that rides on the "fuel cone" that you turned, now the fuel is just leaking into the AFC, take out the fuel cone again like in this video and look down inside that hole and see if you see fuel down in there.
join up dieseltruckresource theres a whole article on how to replace that little oring in there
It's inside the pump top and pump top must be removed, join up dieseltruckresource to see the article
@91CTD yup all kind of fuel is it really hard to get down there and fix tht and do they sell just the o rings thank you sir for your help this is my daily driver and i dont wanna ride my bike to work for too long lol i miss my diesel power lol thanks for any and all help to fix this!
@217414 how do i join tht forum and i went looking thru the forums there is alot but how do i find the one specifically for this problem u mentioned thank you i need all help i can get on this like where to get the o ring part and how to get to the pin to put o ring in hope tht is all tht happend
the smoke screw i talk about in the video, that is underneath of that little cap on top.
Remove the 13mm nut if you'd like and run that torx head all the way down, also the starwheel inside, run that down quite a ways (like 2.5-3 turns)...that will make it smoke pretty good without having to worry about EGT's....hopefully you have an EGT pyrometer.
awsome video but i would like to see it after you turn it up as in how much smoke it dumps i turned up a pump on a ford and the customer was verry pleased to see the end result so if you could can you make a video of after the pump has been up graded thanks
I just put a 2 1/2 system on and then did this on an Isuzu 4JB1-T as it has a Bosch VE pump. Much more torque everywhere and EGT's are still low! Thank you, it has totally transformed my truck!! I am going to turn the starwheel a little more as I was conservative with that part by only going 2/3 a turn. I think I could go at least up to a full turn before it starts to smoke or run higher EGT's.
another cheap way of getting some more fuel into it after you do what you just did take that boost line off and replace it with a zirc fitting pump it full of greese it will hold that pin all the way down no matter how much boost you make and you will get lots of black smoke and some more power
no not kidding it works and i understand you can just remove the lever but all you have to do to put it back to stock is take the cap off and whipe the grease off trust me it works i know it sounds bad but we did to a couple trucks at my school you can do it with any cummins that has afc including the 855 and k series your not gonna hurt anything our teachers told us they used to do it all the time
nope not kidding it really works my teacher told me about it they used to do it all the time and it can be done to almost all cummins pumps that have afc on them its not gonna hurt the pump we did to a few trucks at my school and if you deciide you want to go back to stock just pop the top off and and wipe the grease out it was done in alot of over the road truck becuse you could still pass dot inspection by slipping the hose over the zirc fitting
Im looking at a 1990 dodge cummmins 5 speed with a bad engine, truck is in beuatiful condition, but it has a bad piston , like a valve put a hole in one. Thed guy wants 2800 but i can get it for 2000. Good deal? Are these easy to work on?
Yes its 4x4, it just needs an engine rebuild, top end at least. I can get a long block for 1500, im thinking about that as an option to fix it, swap motors.
I will agree with the gentlemen below, they are easy to work on and if you keep good maintenance up with the truck as a whole, the first gen is my favorite to work with, Very good reliability and efficiency, to me it sounds like a deal. Good luck!
watch what you buy you can get a good running one for 2000 but to your answer yes the 1st gen cummins is by far the best diesel to work on very easy if you ever need help just send me a message
I was thinking about it but i don't want any issues with someones pump running away and blowing the motor up.
and if you tweak the power screw you need guages and i bet most the 1st gen guys running across this video don't have gauges and may melt a piston. lol
but i may do a video just for the poeple that do have guages and are smart.
yes it would , a little bit under full throttle before the turbo comes in.
just do everything i did in the video, when i pulled the AFC cover off i said something about the smoke screw under that little tin cap on top ??? its a 30 torx and a 13mm locknut.
just undo the locknut and run the torx head screw down until its FLUSH with the top of the nut. she'll smoke a little then before the turbo comes in.
so turn the fuel pin, start wheel down 2 turns, smoke screw down ....you'll love it
when u add fuel to a diesel it revs up, when u press accelerator it simply makes the pump add more fuel per injection so should only smoke under load when overfuelling, thats why I asked.
no you're foolilng the injection pump into thinking it has a load on it and pushing the fuel pin diaghram down (just like boost coming in would do), the change is so little it doesn't make a difference in rev.
it helps spool the turbo around town and stuff, its giving it just that little extra bit of fuel before theres any psi into the afc.
but to smoke u need to overfuel, when u overfuel rpm rises.
The only way to make it smoke and stay at idle would be to inject fuel at the wrong time, r u sure u dont mean u get smoke pre-boost when u accelerate not when its actually idling?
@91CTD you can turn down the idle, there is an idle stop on the dront of the pump, its just a pin in the arse to get a long enought flat head screw driver in there.
runaway is when you turn the "power screw" in...the technical name is the full load fuel screw.
Turn it in a few turns and it can add up to 50hp and a BIG smile, but while you're turning the screw you have to keep blippin' the throttle,,, if the RPM"s are hanging a little bit and are coming down real slow...you're getting close to runaway.
Runaway is when you turn the screw in too much and the engine over rev's until it hits the governor, and key won't shut it off
ahh u know about the fuel screw, btw they do shut down if u turn the key off as it shuts off the fuel supply, I have one of these in bits somewhere, u also need to turn idle speed down when u up the fuelling.
I saw a video of a cummins running fine but it ran away on a dyno!!
I'm 99% sure it will shutdown still, the solonoid feeds the lift pump part of the pump, so the runaway would be the same as the governor holding max fuel, which would be the same as max throttle under load: the part u adjust basically moves a collar around the plunger that is a spill off so if u over adjust it it doesnt allow any spill off so every time the plunger moves it gives max fuel it has nothing to do with the solonoid, I'll find that link.
yup, just checked the schematic, the solonoid is in the feed to the plunger, when off the plunger gets no fuel so no matter what the spill off is doing or the governor it makes no difference, it just reciprocates with no fuel, at no point does the high pressure system effect the solonoid, the plunger rotates and reciprocates during down stroke it aligns with the fuel feed port from lift pump, during up (injection) stroke it aligns with outlet port that feeds injectors, I'll pm u the schematic.
When my 93 ran away i had a 2x6 ready to hold over the turbo to shut it down, i debated on not getting one, i figured runaway would never happen to me. It did and boy did i shit myself.
Key woudn't shut it off, the SHUTDOWN LEVER wouldn't even shut it off.....
nope, theres guys at 400hp+ on fuel with maxed out pumps, injectors, and a small turbo upgrade (hot egts)
mines at 300hp and i love it, and a 1st gen wouldn't be diff. if it had a p-pumper in it, every 2nd gen guy has one of them. i like being able to stump everyone at the racetrack.
besides my and my dad's 1st gens are just beaters, e has an 05 cummins as a DD, and a 73 pinto as his other DD.
@91CTD yeah thats what we did to mine also, was turn the "Power screw" on the back of the pump, along with the mods described in your video. and we had to adjust the idle stop and idle it down a bit. what a huge diffrance!!! it rolls so much smoke you cant see 2 lanes of traffic behind you! it almost turned out to be a bit to much and ended up backing the power screw off a turn or so, and backing the smoke screw off a turn and a half. i think i started with 2 tunrs on the power screw.
what year is your truck? if its intercooled a 1 or 1.5 turn wil be fine...if its non intercoled don't touch that screw unless you have an EGT gauge...
you can give the screw a turn to turn and a half...the idle will go up though. you'll have to use the idle adjustment to get it go back down
runaway is when you turn the screw too much and the RPMs won't comeback down after you let off the throttle....give it a 1/2 turn..blip the throttle and do this till you get a full turn on it.
it is a 91.5 (automatic). thanks so much for the info. it wont be till the spring when i will have time to do this (when i get home from collage and all the snow is gone) but i will let you know how it gose. thanks again.
@91CTD my 1st gen 1991 is non intercooled,, and its hard to even hit 1000 degrees egt at full boost and full throttle.and my pyro is pre-turbo btw. my power screw is around 2 turns in.
awesome video, i watched this one night and the next day i went out and did it and adjusted the throttle leakage which also helped! just need a video about turning the fuel screw now
I've heard messing with the first gen pumps can easily cause them to run away? Does this mod have the chance of that happening?
208DIDDERGIRL 5 days ago
@208DIDDERGIRL no chance of that happenening with this mod. that's the power screw mod you're talking about, and i don't have a video on that for that very reason
91CTD 4 days ago
Ya that's my only worrie and that's why I did not mess with the power screw but ya thanks a lot for your info man!

@brandon8968ford sometimes the startwheel does that man, glad you liked the little mods. Not join some forums and do some more tweaking! only reason I didn't post more videos is because I'm afraid people are gonna do this shit with no gauges and melt their engine down.

@91CTD my heated intake has broken on my 1992 Cummins, and its -5 out, but as long as i plug it in she starts great, but if i cant plug it in she starts really hard, am i damaging the engine when i start her like that? im going to put a new heated intake on asap but their not cheap (about $400)

hey man, you know where i can get the banjo bolt at? dodge discontinued the part, cummins says its a bosch pump, and all these different diesel shops dont have it. thanks man
87norcalyoder 1 month ago

HolboxTaos 3 months ago
@HolboxTaos Did you find the deep side of the pin man? The rest of my videos are on my channel.
91CTD 1 month ago
Great video! I tried rotating the fuel pin but the pin is the same all the way around....no ramp or flat sides. Also, when I rotated the starwheel clockwise, it was all the way down already. I have a 93 dodge 250 turbo diesel.
HolboxTaos 3 months ago
@HolboxTaos You're not looking at the pin hard enough, one side of it has a little bit deeper ramp, it's the side with the metal sticking out on the very bottom, sometimes it tricks your eyes. watch the vid again maybe you'll see it when i point it out
You really could just buy a performance fuel pin and do away with the stock one, for $110 you get 40hp and alot of throttle response that's a good trade off- you can get a performance pin from dennyT , search his site on google.
91CTD 3 months ago
@HolboxTaos One more thing. There was no metal sticking out at the bottom. Round all the way around!

Well i have 3.73 gears on it with 5 speed manual transmision you think those gears are to low or i need to do something with the injector pump thank's for you help
chavarrias151 4 months ago
Do you know how to adjust gobernor spring on the injector pump i have a 91 dodge ram 350 series with 5.9 cummins but only goes like 57 milles an hour
chavarrias151 4 months ago
@chavarrias151 You can't adjust it, someone may have put really really low gears in your truck, Is it an early 91 non intercooled and is it automatic or stick ? your overdrive may not be working if it's an overdrive auto, or if it's an early 91 non intercooled it would have came with a 3 speed auto and 3.07 gears but someone may have put 4.10's or something in not knowing it would only do 60mph afterwards.
you need to back the throttle limiter screw out on the pump...and install a 3200 spring
91CTD 4 months ago
REMINDER FOR ALL THAT DO THIS: when you go to put your banjo bolt back on dont tighten it to tight because it will break and they are VERY hard to replace

@9412vpullin It's not always a certain degree, you need to put the deepest side ramp towards the front of the truck

i need some help. i followed thru the video and did eveything right. i power braked it and revved it and no smoke at all. any ideas? should there be any smoke?
9412vpullin 8 months ago
@9412vpullin Yea there should be some smoke your torque converter is probably wasted like all of them and isn't loading the engine up, that or the bands in your tranny are out of adjustment. probably a combo of the two
You won't get smoke unless there's a load on the engine, throw a tight aftermarket torque converter in there and you'll get another 100+ ft lb torque to the wheels plus the truck will drive alot different and actually load the engine
91CTD 8 months ago
o ok..

@MrJakediesel doing this mod makes it smoke a little before turbo spools, mainly adds low end grunt. and can turn the pump up alll the way and not hurt the engine as long as you don't run it for too long, you need an EGT gauge to measure exhaust temps so you don't melt a piston
91CTD 9 months ago
@91CTD can you take the afc spring out?
GMANW3BB 6 months ago
@GMANW3BB YOu could, but it will render the AFC useless
91CTD 6 months ago
True, but you can lower the idle down futher by adjust the 2 idle screws at the back fo the pump, the idle screw on the throttle arm is useless and should be discarded at this point,
I don't own a Dodge Cummings but I have a car that runs this type of pump and have been tweaking it a while. There's plenty of knowledge avaliable and this just scratchs the surface of what can be done. It is a nice easy to digest video.
jarrus464 11 months ago
@jarrus464 I know it just scratches the surface my Dad has a VE powered cummins I set up making 307 RWHP on stock injectors and a stock turbo so I know my way around the pump but runaway and all that doesn't phase alot of people till it happens..they wanna turn up the fuel screw then let THEM read all the warnings and procedures one on of the helpful 1st gen cummins diesel forums on the net.....
There are no 2 screws on OUR pumps.... there is 1 and 1 only idle screw on the back side of the IP
91CTD 11 months ago
Shouldn't you turn the star wheel anti clockwise and increase the max fuel screw...
jarrus464 11 months ago
@jarrus464 Turn the star wheel clockwise to lower the starting point of the fuel cone increasing spool up and acceleration........The max fuel screw is one I don't want to get into a in a video because there's so much you can EFF up with that thing......If you advance the timing before adjusting the fuel screw then you can't get to the idle screw to lower the idle and you have to loosen the pump back up and let it come back then bend a wrench to lower the idle after you turn up the screw.

Great vid, I am think about doing to my 93, My only question i have is that i have a automatic truck, Once i remove the TPS does it need to be adjusted when i put it back on, or does it just bolt back on the same way it came off?
sschey 1 year ago
@sschey No you dont have to readjust it.
91CTD 1 year ago
tried this on my buddys 93 automatic, when i took the pin out, it hadnt been turned, but the gear ring is as tight as it will go, i turned the pin. no more smoke and minimal power change. any suggestions???
ultraclassic1987 1 year ago
@ultraclassic1987 ether grind the fuel pin down or order you a denny t stage 2 pin and it will change the power big time and advance your timing and then turn your idle up some and turn you boost up and you will get plenty of power and smoke
cannonkevin94 9 months ago
ok..so i turned the pump up more...when i was puttin the banjo bolt back in it broke..what can i do..i cant find one in kentucky.
johndeereALG 1 year ago
@johndeereALG Uhm I'm not sure. If an injection pump shop Can't get it then the worlds over. You could just use fittings and some hose to go from the intake manifold to the pump.
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD Thanks for the advice. My shop teacher made me one from a normal bolt. It works fine. But i strongly suggest to anyone that does this not to over tighten the banjo bolt, if it breaks there a bitch to find. But other than that this is a good way to get more power. Thanks though for the advice man.
johndeereALG 1 year ago
could you not just put the pin on a lathe and turn down the cone ?
Conway11906 1 year ago
@Conway11906 I dont think so the part you want more steep is the ramp itself which i dont think a lathe can do something like that. What the aftermarket ones are is a solid chunk that they machine a nice deep smooth ramp into, like a dennyt. This metal for these pins is so hard you have no idea lol.

hey man you seen to know alot i just got 89 dually 2wd that had been sitting for a year and the power steering was empty so i filled it then it stared to turn easier one way but the the other is that the pump thats fucked or box?
fordblowz 1 year ago
@fordblowz Probably air in the steering box. Fill it up and leave the cap off overnight the air bubble will find it's way out.
91CTD 1 year ago
I did this on my truck. It gave it so much more hp and torque. Smokes alot more too haha..check out my vids to see what it does when you do this.!

i turned the fuel pin on my truck worked great really felt some more get up and go it shaved like 2 seconds off my time at the drags strip but it cut my fuel mileage rite in have went from 1000km a tank to 500km a tank

Thanks for any advice
rockkinironmaiden 1 year ago
I have another question for you, Not fuel related, but you seem to no these trucks.
I found a 92 4x4 auto that the owner said the front drivshaft was not in because the u-joint was bad. Truck has had some trans work done and I wonder why he would not put a new u-joint in, can't be that expensive? The pump has been turned up, but how much I have no Idea.
What can I do to check out the 4x4? If you have some advice that would be great.
I need a 4x4 but don't want a ton of problems. Thanks
4vermont 1 year ago
@4vermont He could mean the u-joints in the ends of the axles ...the ones you have to pull the rotors and hubs to get to......if he didnt put the driveshaft in because the ujoint in the shaft is bad, hes jus lazy cuz thats not too bad
91CTD 1 year ago
Thanks for all the advice. I an getting ready to purchase a 91-93 4x4 first gen, I want a 5 speed but mostly auto's around here. What do you think about the 518 auto trans? Just a little worried about the auto. I know your truck is a manual, just wondering if you have any advice for me, Thanks
4vermont 1 year ago
@4vermont Great transmission the only part that sucks is the factory torque converter they put in front of the auto, you can't get any power through those things they just slip alot. The transmission itself is a great unit. Drop the pan as soon as you get it and adjust the bands and raise the pressure in the valve body and it'll be great.
I would recoomend getting an upgraded torque converter from either Goerend transmissions or Suncoast......You won't believe the diff. it' makes in the truck.
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD Thanks Man, looks like I asked the right guy, Can't wait to purchase. Thanks Again
4vermont 1 year ago
This is a total n00b question, but how much does this typically affect fuel milage?
Choochlyman 1 year ago
@Choochlyman wont' effect it. Depends on your right foot.
when the new wears off and you stop flooring it all the time you'll get same as before, advance the timing like in the other video you're guaranteed at least 1+ mpg
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD Awesome. I actually did this to my truck this morning. I rotated the star wheel one full turn (for some reason it got really tight after 1 turn and wouldn't let me go a full 1 1/2,) and rotated the pin 90 degrees clockwise. I also went ahead and tightened up the smoke screw quite a bit. I noticed quite a bit of difference in just taking off. I can get a pretty good puff of smoke when I start up, but the coal just isn't really rolling for me. Maybe because I don't have a load. Hmm...
Choochlyman 1 year ago
91CTD - i also have a 91 cummins 5 speed ive done the same mods to mine, move the fuel pin 90 degrees, turned in the smoke screw, im straight piped out the side and have egt gaues and all that. my question is, and a very simple question. turning the star wheel underneith the afc, is that the same as turning the power screw on the back side kind of underneither there and behind the afc? i can roal some serious coal no prolbem in all gears, like so much black smoke you loose 2 lanes of traffic lol
Moose400ex 1 year ago
@Moose400ex no the powerscrew is very very different. it increases fuel through the higher rpm basicly through the governor.
the star wheel is just an adjustment to control smoke and where the fuel pin sits as a default, doesn't really increase power.
the power screw is badass it does what it's named lol.
91CTD 1 year ago
Hey any cummins fans out there help a newbee here? Got a 92 d250 with auto. I know the autos have a lil less power and heard this was to prevent tranny failure?? I would like to twist it up a little bit as seen in this video but dont want to sacrafice my tranny. Its seen one rebuild some thousands ago before my ownership and seems to be solid and shifts decent with no burnt smell. Any help would be most thankfull
oldbuckshot 1 year ago
@oldbuckshot You won't hurt it, turn it all the way up if you want I'd worry more about burning up the engine make sure you have guages if you do any more mods than what's in this vid.
The stock torque converter is so sloppy it actually protects the Trans itself.
91CTD 1 year ago
turning the starwheel down reduces the spring pressure on the afc diaphragm allowing the pin to begin its trravel at a lower boost pressure, allowing for earlier fueling.
cumminsfan 1 year ago
cool vid man' ive got a 93 it smokes blue like crazy at cold start, also rough idle like its loading up"flooding" then cleans up as rpm's rise? im thinking injector or fueling issue.. again cool vid
digzie1 1 year ago
@digzie1 Sounds like air is getting in your fuel system...you may have a small fuel leak somewhere that is letting air into your fuel system at night or something.
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD didnt think of that, its in a 1990 chevy crew cab with stock electric pumps over the mechanical cummins pump, the electric pumps have got to go before winter..
digzie1 1 year ago
@digzie1 Um that's bad dude. the cummins VE pump can only have about 15 psi going into it or the front seal in the pump will go bad and literally dump fuel into the crankcase.
Checked your oil lately? Any fuel in there? smell or overfilled will be the giveaway.
You need to ditch those electric pumps soon. In a 90 chevy since it was originally TBI gas you're probably putting out 15 psi from that pump, was it originally 6.5 diesel ?
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD it was a 5.7 gas--sb350 i figured pumping diesel through a gas pump is like "sucking molasses through a coffee straw in the winter time" lol it does run out of power at mid range, either way the pumps are coming off ! do they have helper pumps 89' to 93' i had an 84' chevy i converted last year the doner was a 1990 cab & chassie and the fuel tank was missing, the salvage guy told me they had helper pumps,,i never used one on that conversion it ran awsome..
digzie1 1 year ago
@digzie1 No diesel and gas are almost the same viscosity pretty much,
An 89-93 cummins has a little mechanical pump at the BACK- BOTTOM -DRIVERS SIDE corner of the engine.
Your engine must have a block off plate there ? i don't know what someone did to your truck for the fuel system.
91CTD 1 year ago
@91CTD no block off, the mechanical pump is there, being pre fed by the electric tank pumps,, i ddnt know if they came w a helper-pusher pump to get fuel to the mechanical pump,,guess not.
digzie1 1 year ago
@digzie1 Oh ok well theres no pusher pumps the mechanical pump sucks it from the tank and feeds it to the filter head, after it's filtered it''s sent to the injection pump.
right now the electric pumps are probably becoming a restriction in the higher RPM's
91CTD 1 year ago
@digzie1 Actually sounds like your timing is retarded, Try advancing it like in my other vid.

I'm going to adjust my throttle tomorrow.
spartus09 1 year ago
@spartus09 Sometimes depending where the factory had to set them, they will only go down a turn or 2.
you should just buy the aftermarket fuel pin, you'll get an extra 40hp and quite a bit more seat of the pants power. DENNYT performance makes the replacement fuel pin. $110

@217414 Sounds like you messed up the o-ring on the fuel pin that rides on the "fuel cone" that you turned, now the fuel is just leaking into the AFC, take out the fuel cone again like in this video and look down inside that hole and see if you see fuel down in there.
join up dieseltruckresource theres a whole article on how to replace that little oring in there
It's inside the pump top and pump top must be removed, join up dieseltruckresource to see the article

the smoke screw i talk about in the video, that is underneath of that little cap on top.
Remove the 13mm nut if you'd like and run that torx head all the way down, also the starwheel inside, run that down quite a ways (like 2.5-3 turns)...that will make it smoke pretty good without having to worry about EGT's....hopefully you have an EGT pyrometer.

I think I could go at least up to a full turn before it starts to smoke or run higher EGT's.
jphdg 1 year ago
another cheap way of getting some more fuel into it after you do what you just did take that boost line off and replace it with a zirc fitting pump it full of greese it will hold that pin all the way down no matter how much boost you make and you will get lots of black smoke and some more power
weeman516 1 year ago
@weeman516 I hope your kidding.
Pump the AFC with grease???
Dude just remove the AFC lever inside the pump if you want no fuel control.
91CTD 1 year ago
no not kidding it works and i understand you can just remove the lever but all you have to do to put it back to stock is take the cap off and whipe the grease off trust me it works i know it sounds bad but we did to a couple trucks at my school you can do it with any cummins that has afc including the 855 and k series your not gonna hurt anything our teachers told us they used to do it all the time
weeman516 1 year ago
nope not kidding it really works my teacher told me about it they used to do it all the time and it can be done to almost all cummins pumps that have afc on them its not gonna hurt the pump we did to a few trucks at my school and if you deciide you want to go back to stock just pop the top off and and wipe the grease out it was done in alot of over the road truck becuse you could still pass dot inspection by slipping the hose over the zirc fitting

Im looking at a 1990 dodge cummmins 5 speed with a bad engine, truck is in beuatiful condition, but it has a bad piston , like a valve put a hole in one. Thed guy wants 2800 but i can get it for 2000. Good deal? Are these easy to work on?
CumminsTwinTurbo 2 years ago
Yes they're very very easy to work on.
Is it 4x4 ? If its 4x4 i'd say 2500 is good, if 2wd definely don't pay more than 2200,
5 speed is a big deal, and you said its beautiful so it sounds like it needs some engine work.
91CTD 2 years ago
Yes its 4x4, it just needs an engine rebuild, top end at least. I can get a long block for 1500, im thinking about that as an option to fix it, swap motors.
CumminsTwinTurbo 2 years ago
I will agree with the gentlemen below, they are easy to work on and if you keep good maintenance up with the truck as a whole, the first gen is my favorite to work with, Very good reliability and efficiency, to me it sounds like a deal. Good luck!

you should do a vid for the full power screw
turbodizle 2 years ago
I was thinking about it but i don't want any issues with someones pump running away and blowing the motor up.
and if you tweak the power screw you need guages and i bet most the 1st gen guys running across this video don't have gauges and may melt a piston. lol
but i may do a video just for the poeple that do have guages and are smart.
91CTD 2 years ago
Comment removed
GMANW3BB 2 years ago
yes it would , a little bit under full throttle before the turbo comes in.
just do everything i did in the video, when i pulled the AFC cover off i said something about the smoke screw under that little tin cap on top ??? its a 30 torx and a 13mm locknut.
just undo the locknut and run the torx head screw down until its FLUSH with the top of the nut. she'll smoke a little then before the turbo comes in.
so turn the fuel pin, start wheel down 2 turns, smoke screw down ....you'll love it
91CTD 2 years ago
arent u better off just adjusting main fuel screw?
the boost compensator wont go beyond the max fuelling set by main screw...or will it...
tpvalley 2 years ago
main fuel screw on a stock i/c truck makes the shutdown solenoid go bad....and raises idle and lowering the idle is a royal pain.
91CTD 2 years ago
what I mean is the boost compensator adjustment wont increase max fuelling it will just adjust the rate of increase to boost....or will it?
also, what is the star wheel adjusting inside?
tpvalley 2 years ago
starwheel is putting the fuel pin down farter on its ramp, so it adds more fuel before BOOST is even inside the afc.
too much starwheel and you'll get a nice smoke haze at idle and a big cloud of black smoke at take off...
91CTD 2 years ago
how can u get black smoke at idle without engine revving up?!
tpvalley 2 years ago
too much fuel , its called hazzeee
91CTD 2 years ago
when u add fuel to a diesel it revs up, when u press accelerator it simply makes the pump add more fuel per injection so should only smoke under load when overfuelling, thats why I asked.
tpvalley 2 years ago
no you're foolilng the injection pump into thinking it has a load on it and pushing the fuel pin diaghram down (just like boost coming in would do), the change is so little it doesn't make a difference in rev.
it helps spool the turbo around town and stuff, its giving it just that little extra bit of fuel before theres any psi into the afc.
91CTD 2 years ago
but to smoke u need to overfuel, when u overfuel rpm rises.
The only way to make it smoke and stay at idle would be to inject fuel at the wrong time, r u sure u dont mean u get smoke pre-boost when u accelerate not when its actually idling?
tpvalley 2 years ago
@91CTD so adjusting the star wheel down is doing the same thing as turning the smoke screw down, just making it go further.
Moose400ex 1 year ago
@91CTD you can turn down the idle, there is an idle stop on the dront of the pump, its just a pin in the arse to get a long enought flat head screw driver in there.
Moose400ex 1 year ago
i got a 93 and i turned the smoke screw all the way in and you can notice a difference on acceleration

GEARHEADGUY92 2 years ago
awesome video man thanks alot also what is runaway?
yfz450lover 2 years ago
No problem,
runaway is when you turn the "power screw" in...the technical name is the full load fuel screw.
Turn it in a few turns and it can add up to 50hp and a BIG smile, but while you're turning the screw you have to keep blippin' the throttle,,, if the RPM"s are hanging a little bit and are coming down real slow...you're getting close to runaway.
Runaway is when you turn the screw in too much and the engine over rev's until it hits the governor, and key won't shut it off
91CTD 2 years ago
ahh u know about the fuel screw, btw they do shut down if u turn the key off as it shuts off the fuel supply, I have one of these in bits somewhere, u also need to turn idle speed down when u up the fuelling.
I saw a video of a cummins running fine but it ran away on a dyno!!
tpvalley 2 years ago
No the key will NOT shut the truck off in runaway , it will immediately blow the rubber tip right off the shutdown solenoid.
Idle speed needs to go down, Yes i stated that in a previous comment.
And the truck that ran away is Josh Ayers 500hp truck with a 14mm VE pump.
91CTD 2 years ago
I'm 99% sure it will shutdown still, the solonoid feeds the lift pump part of the pump, so the runaway would be the same as the governor holding max fuel, which would be the same as max throttle under load: the part u adjust basically moves a collar around the plunger that is a spill off so if u over adjust it it doesnt allow any spill off so every time the plunger moves it gives max fuel it has nothing to do with the solonoid, I'll find that link.
If Im wrong I'll punch myself in the face.
tpvalley 2 years ago
yup, just checked the schematic, the solonoid is in the feed to the plunger, when off the plunger gets no fuel so no matter what the spill off is doing or the governor it makes no difference, it just reciprocates with no fuel, at no point does the high pressure system effect the solonoid, the plunger rotates and reciprocates during down stroke it aligns with the fuel feed port from lift pump, during up (injection) stroke it aligns with outlet port that feeds injectors, I'll pm u the schematic.
tpvalley 2 years ago
Listen, im just going from experience.
91CTD 2 years ago
well that is totally unfathomable!
I can think why that should be but I'll take ur word for it!
ever considered getting a p7100 inline pump etc? or a bigger plunger etc fro the ve?
tpvalley 2 years ago
nope, theres guys at 400hp+ on fuel with maxed out pumps, injectors, and a small turbo upgrade (hot egts)
mines at 300hp and i love it, and a 1st gen wouldn't be diff. if it had a p-pumper in it, every 2nd gen guy has one of them. i like being able to stump everyone at the racetrack.

@91CTD yeah thats what we did to mine also, was turn the "Power screw" on the back of the pump, along with the mods described in your video. and we had to adjust the idle stop and idle it down a bit. what a huge diffrance!!! it rolls so much smoke you cant see 2 lanes of traffic behind you! it almost turned out to be a bit to much and ended up backing the power screw off a turn or so, and backing the smoke screw off a turn and a half. i think i started with 2 tunrs on the power screw.

is there any chance of having a run away with this? thanks great vidio!

nope, no runaway
runaway occurs when you turn the power screw.

so do you recommend not turning the power screws then?

what year is your truck? if its intercooled a 1 or 1.5 turn wil be fine...if its non intercoled don't touch that screw unless you have an EGT gauge...
you can give the screw a turn to turn and a half...the idle will go up though. you'll have to use the idle adjustment to get it go back down
runaway is when you turn the screw too much and the RPMs won't comeback down after you let off the throttle....give it a 1/2 turn..blip the throttle and do this till you get a full turn on it.
