Folk music is a type of music that is passed down from generation to generation through song, none of the words are written in stone, so the fact that Roscoe couldn't read would make no difference in the quality of his music, because his music comes from his heart not from his big fat head like you...
We should listen to him (at least once in our lives, and then pause to think about it) for the same basic reason we should go to school, and learn to read, and study history and civics: to understand the context of the world we live in. Roscoe exemplifies a formative aspect of our shared history.
A great artist who transcends the nationalistic, tribal, phoney folkloric idolization crap that infests contemporary responses to "traditional" American music.
"Made" America? What was here before, Swiss cheese? The man was born in 1912, not 1712. I admire that generation too (my father's) but come down to earth a little, would you?
Get a life. I'm on the earth and not worrying about someone else's opinion. And yes he helped make America along with the generations that came before him.
@OldSkaterGuy Hope so, but I think its to late here in the USA. Old Skateboarders Rule! I sk8d on and off since the late 60's "Gridlock skateboard Team"
'I can't believe there are holcomb fans on youtube. i thought dumb teenagers held sway here with dorm room antics and horrid sketch comedy type stuff. love roscoe holcomb though, that high tenor gets me every time. i hvae both his albums and the mountain music of kentucky and i've heard john henry played by 'banjo' bill corbit on that kentucky album.
for me, roscoe is the epitome of folk music, and music in general, probably only for me and a few others though, i can see why people wouldnt like him
Roscoe was tormented by guilt about playing music because Old Baptist religion viewed musical instruments as sinful. He frequently gave up playing for periods of his life or attended Holiness Pentacostal services which allowed instruments. Check out Mountain Music of Kentucky 2 disc set on Smithsonian/Folkways.
Great Recommendation Millkeith. That 2 disk set is a the essence of American Folk and American culture and what made this great nation. I highly recommend this CD set. Even if its not your taste in music its a historical value beyond measure. Listen to what Holcomb says in the beginning. That the music is spiritual and even a small child can see this and wants to get to it. Its also very healing for those that are old and dying. Smart man. Wish I could have met him and spent a day on his porch
it just dont get much better than this right here!

Oh, he could read. He could write, too; I've got some of his old letters to my grandparents (they were friends).

I'm hooked to blues music but Roscoe always makes the hair on my head stand up tall...like Edgar Allen Poe.

The Edgar Allan Poe of old-time music, eh? I think you just hit the proverbial nail on the head.
