My experience subbing in a K-3. children (mainly boys)

call other boys faggots constantly. I doubt that Utah and California teachers or TA's respond differently--that calling people bad names is wrong. This implies that being gay is a bad thing. What is a better response by teachers. Children need to be protected from homophobia that may escalate into hate crimes when gays and lesbians are subjected to inequality. Children learn homophobia by default and may later go to prison by default.

I am firm believer in the right of gays to marry. I am watching Day 1, Chapter 3 of the trial. It is all very interesting. However, Mr Katami did a very sloppy job of responding to the defense counsel's questioning about the appropriateness of sex-ed in grade one and two! His wishy-washy answers will hurt this case.....his inability to say "it is inappropriate to teach kids about sex at that age" will feed the defense in their goal to discredit the plaintiffs!
