What a moment in Thoroughbred racing. Hail to Secretariat!!! But we must also remember Sham for being an outstanding horse too. In any other year, Sham would have been the champion. So glad I was around to see that year unfold. This footage will always remain inspiring. Penny Chenery - you are amazing and I honor your grit to see this horse deliver what you knew he held inside. Thank you.
I cryed of joy :'D Amazing video i wish in 1973 I was born -_- or at least before so i had like 10 or 11 years :P I LOVE THIS VIDEO I SEE IT EVERY DAY! :'D
wonderful video, had me in tears. wish I could have witnessed it but I was not born yet! I don't think there will ever be another horse like Secretariat.
Does anyone know in what year where aluminium horseshoes introduced into American throughbred racing (which allowed the horses to run faster) and also what the speed advantage was? I doubt the difference would be enough for MOW, Seabird, Ribot or Phar Lap to catch Secretariat, but would still like to know...
@eckythimble About 1940 aluminum shoes were used on a regular basis. They were made to have less strain on a horse hoof and legs. The were not made to make a horses run faster. How much faster they made a horse run better I do not know but never hear one old time track horseman make a issue out of it. So the difference could not have been much at all. Its just another tool out of many the MOW fans try to use to justify why MOW never ran close to the times Secrtetariat did
@rscarbro100 Thanks, I was actually asking because I was wondering what Native Dancer ran on. Somewhere else on the net I found this: "A lot of old trainers estimated that over 5 furlongs the difference between shoes and plates was about 6 lengths." If you adjust MOWs best 1 1/4 mile time by 10 furlongs at 0.20s per length then his best adjusted time comes to be 1:59:40 - the same as Secretariat ran the Derby, but which Secretariat himself later beat twice.
@eckythimble Charles Hatton said the tracks of the past perphaps 1 second slower than when Secretariat ran. With that statement he added Secretariat faster If that was true the difference between shoes and plates were 5 lengths over 5 furlongs then Hatton would have known and would not have said Secretariat faster. If you found it on the Net you better check the source and exactly who those trainers were. I suspect it was a Man 0' War johnnycomelately.
@rscarbro100 Well I got the quote from a UK racing forum site, which was purely discussing horseshoes (steel v. alumunium v. plastic), not Man O War, tho' the original source is unclear. Surely some mathematical adjustment must be made from 1920s to 1970s or else do we accept MOW's then brilliant 2.01.80 for the Travers Stakes was really nothing much? The way Secretariat hit the post still pulling away I'm certain he's clear #1, but MOW probably still better than the rest.
@eckythimble There is no doubt alumunium shoes are safer and quicker than steel shoes. Its got to be minor though. Has a old time track horseman ever stated it made a big differnece in judging the speed of any 2 horses or more? I have never read where it has. A horse with great stamina and speed no doubt Man 0' War was. Probably had better stamina than speed but both were there.I will not argue he was #2 of all time. We all wish we could have seen all his races.
@rscarbro Whatever the horseshoes, would certainly be great to see more Man O War video than what we have. Would be especially interesting to see how he closed his races. When Sec was healthy not only did he win, I notice he was also the fastest moving horse at the wire, i.e. still pulling away from the field at the wire. One exception of course was the Canadian where Maples admitted to deliberately easing him off at the lights instead of at the wire, once he was 10-12 lengths in front.
I swear at one point hooves aren't even touching the dirt, it's as though he was actually pagasus and had wings (over exageration I know) what a feeling it must have been to be able to ride this marvelous creature.
Absolutely fantastic! What a beast!! and I mean that in the very best of ways. Poetry in motion. I remember this as a kid and it impresses me even more now than it did then. When I was young my family spent some time going to the track. I always enjoyed it. I think Monmouth Park was the favorite. Thanks.
@MrItaliano1900 is an unmitigated TWIT. He, she, it has been posting trash on many of the Secretariat sites. Ribot was a good horse, but no where near the caliber of Secretariat. The TWIT likes to point out that Ribot won in 3 different countries. The TWIT undoubtly does not have a clue that it is further from Paris, KY to Hempstead, NY than it is from Rome to Paris and the US is 3 times the size of Western Europe. The Mountain does not go to Mohammad. Mohammad goes to the Mountain.
Not to wade into someone else's argument, but I hope people realize by now that Wikipedia is not an authority. Any nitwit can create or edit a Wikipedia page. The sentence on the Ribot page that Ribot was alleged considered the strongest horse ever is laughable. No citation or source. Just a bald assertion. If you have world records or speed measures, that's one thing. However the subjective opinion of yet another internet "expert" or a sentence on a Wikipedia page is quite another.
@ihasch - Perfectly stated! Intelligent Secretariat fans speak to STATISTICAL FACTS while Sec's detractors speak to emotional hogwash...making it up as they go along to discount his unparalleled achievements like the idiot "alliencedful" who just wrote "cheater". Anti-SEC individuals get more pathetic EVERY day!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 Danny (and everyone else) try and stay calm and don't respond to the provocations. As of 11/10/2011 the Italians have destroyed themselves and are going back to the stone age. I feel sorry for them (really), but at least MrItaliano1900 is going back with them. Unfortunately all the rest of us will be left to clean up after the disaster.
Secretariat recorded 2:24, not 2:25, for a mile and a half, which is the all time world record on a dirt surface, as a three-year old; that is, A COLT. You can look this up. After crossing the line, Turcotte pulled him up to coast; after which, he was recorded by multiple eyewitnesses/stopwatches as unofficially breaking the all time world record for 1 5/8 miles, while being PULLED UP for that eighth of a mile, at 2:37 3/5, which broke the 1956 record set by Swaps.
@VampireYoshi - once again you are wasting you time with this European "fool". His combined zeal for Ribot and hatred towards America blinds him to the truth which is why I am also done speaking to his senseless comments. He sits in front of his laptop drooling over the "Wikepedia" comment thta Ribot was the strongest horse ever...what that means I don't know, but it CERTAINLY DOESN'T imply Ribot was the greatest horse ever...he cannot compare to Secretariat...NO HORSE CAN!!!
The main reason Secretariat is so great is that he is the product of two noble but nothing really special Sire and Dame, Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal. He was bred at a smaller than average horse racing farm in rural Virginia (which produced back-to-back Derby and Belmont Winners, by the way). The offspring of Bold Ruler were not supposed to be able to go distances of over 1 mile, yet Secretariat has held the WORLD RECORD for the distance of 1 1/2 miles on dirt for 38+ years.
The reason so many people love Secretariat is that he reminds us of how great America once was.....contrary to the subversive efforts of the current moron living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Secretariat helped to unify and heal our country when we were coming out of the quagmire called South Vietnam in 1973. We need another Secretariat.....because all the politicians are just a bunch of self-serving, narcissist, assclowns, and will never produce a hero.
I love this!! Everytime I see it I cry! I remember watching Big Red win all three of the triple crown races and I remember crying each time he won. Thank you for this amazing video and remembrance of the greatest horse that has ever lived!!!
The ignorance and arrogance U.S. is famous. If a horse wins in the U.S.A is automatically become the best in the world, as if outside the USA there was an expanse of lifeless desert. Out your Truman Show ,in the real world everyone knows : the best trotter ever is the italian VARENNE the best horse galloping is the Italian RIBOT the best jockey ever is the italian FRANKIE DETTORI ! Movies are nice, but in reality Secretariat has never participated in only one important race outside the USA !!
@MrItaliano1900 - You are the most pathetic piece of human garbage on the face of the earth! If you can't show Secretariat the respect he deserves then get off this %$%$#$ing board. You animosity of anything related to America is obvious which is why you should stay down in your "little boot". Comparing Ribot to Secretariat proves your absolutely clueless knowledge of thoroughbred race horsing. Watch this video and genuflect before THE GREATEST RACE HORSE THAT EVER WALKED THE PLANET!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 People of shit like you should be killed, your ignorance is really ridiculous .. Everyone knows that Ribot is the best horse in history. You can check on the internet. Secretariat won only in the U.S. and probably the strongest horse in the USA. But where you put the rest of the world. A horse, to be the best, must beat the other horses and travel. Shut up idiot!
@MrItaliano1900 Never heard of Ribot. When Sec died, it hit the front paper of every newspaper & newscast AROUND THE WORLD. He is the only athlete in HISTORY to be on the front cover of Newsweek, Sports Illustrated & Time Magazine in the same week. He is also the SOLE athlete in HISTORY, human or horse, that speeded UP throughout an entire race WHILE breaking EACH quarter mile track record. It has never happened before or since. Look it up. The 73 Belmont is the greatest performance in history.
@cmf4321 - My good friend, please don't waste your time on this idiot! He hates America and EVERYTHING associated with it. I am sure he believes Mike Piazza was greater than Babe Ruth because he is Italian!!! His comments are totally worthless, and he is thebiggest bigot I have ever had the DISpleasure of associating myself with. What is interesting with these fanatics is you give them hard core STATS and they don't respond because, deep down, they truly know SEC is the best! Best Regards!
@MrItaliano1900 - I didn;t see Ribot racing in the US either you retard! Keep on believing whatever makes you feel good becuase you comments towards Secretariat are absurd and make you a sheer laughing stock for this discussion...once again...maybe one day you will wake up from your coma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 it's useless for you to fret, it's written in history books that Ribot is the strongest horse of all time. Maybe for you it 's a problem because it's not an American horse. But this does not matter to people. Secretariat was never released by the United States, Ribot has won in 3 different countries, all the most important races, including the most important race Arc De Triomphe in Paris, for two times. but you do not know where is Paris on the map, you probably have never traveled
@MrItaliano1900 - What are Ribot's record times? You DON'T respond to facts, just "BS" and emotion. Secretariat has posted world class record times and "CMF4321" clearly pointed out he is the only horse that ever accelerated a WHOLE 1-1/4 mile race from start to finish. These are FACTS. ANYONE can say that Man o' War, Ribot, Sea Bird II, Citation, Spectacular Bid, etc. can claim thetitle as greatest horse ever...ONLY Secretariat claims that tite via his "historic" times. Go back to sleep!
@MrItaliano1900 - 1-1/2 dirt mile - 2:24 - WORLD RECORD; 1-1/2 turf mile - 2:24-4/5 - Belmont Record; 1 mile - 1:33-2/5 - Aqueduck Record; 1-1/8 mile - 1:45-2/5 - Previous WORLD RECORD - broken by only 1/5 of a second many years later. Note that SEC also "galluped" in that race to an amazing 1:57-4/5 seconds 1-1/4 mile time (12-2/5 - 1/8 gallup!) which is also a dirt track WORLD RECORD. 1-1/4 mile Kentucky Derby 1:59-2/5 - track record; 1-3/16 mile 1:53-2/5 - Preakness Record...FACTS!!!
@MrItaliano1900 - What history book? Just beacuse ONE internet comment calls Ribot the strongest horse ever you idiot??? I can refer to HUNDREDS of internet comments referring to Secretariat asthe greatest horse ever! You are truly one sad horse enrthusiast...I absolutely pity your pathetic jealousy of Big Red and lack of horse racing knowledge...go back to sleep!!!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 you are really stupid and ignorant, you're a loser. Go on Wikipedia and read the story of Ribot or Varenne. Everyone knows these horses are the strongest in history, I really do not know if you have some mental problem. We Europeans laugh when we see your races of 6 participants, we also ran for 28 participants. You do not have a single race thought to be important in the world. You are considered ridiculous, with your film on the donkeys hahahah my god please shut up hahah
@MrItaliano1900 - What difference does it make WHAT RACE & WHO a horse races if his times are WORLD CLASS you idiot! 5,000 horses could have raced on Belmont Park on June 9, 1973 & they wouldn't have beat SEC. Once again, I speak to FACTS & you speak to NOTHING! Doesn't it say something that SEC posted the 3 best Triple Crown times in HISTORY? That covers 420+ races & 3,500+ horses! What horse accelerates from start to finish over a 1-1/4 track? SEC accomplished supernatural feats!!!!!!!
@MrItaliano1900 - Who really cares what you Europeans think? If you knew anything you would also understand SEC was SICK in two of those defeats, one of the defeats he WON but was disqualified for "brushing" a horse and another defeat he posted a remarkable 2:26-3/5 time for 1-1/2 miles IN THE MUD, only to have Prove Out post a sensational 2:25-45 to best him. I would also like to know why your Panzie European horses need "MONTHS" between races when our great horses race every 2 - 4 weeks?
@Dannykeith46 ..an American horse has participated in 21 races, he won 16 and you consider him the strongest in history hahaha. Ribot has participated in 16 races and he has never lost. L'Arc de Triomphe is a race where participating the strongest horse of the planet, and Ribot has won this race 2 times. Secretariat compared to Ribot is considered a donkey, by any expert.
@MrItaliano1900 - To continue my prior post your TC is run over 3 months (if not longer) while ours is over FIVE WEEKS! Ribot ran 16 races in 3 years while SEC ran 21 races in 2 years! Get the point, your "powder puff" horses need "eternal-like rest" between races. SEC once ran TWO 1-1/2 mile races in 8 days...Ribot would have crumbled under such stress! It figures since you are from a continenet whose sheer existence today is only due to America saving your sorry ass in WWII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MrItaliano1900 - In closing, why don't you disappear from this forum which "Kierkegaard73" was creative and kind enough to post for horse racing enthusiasts who sincerely appreciate Sec's supernaturral ability. You NOR any SEC detractor are not worthy to post on this forum due to your disgusting jealousy and hatred towards America. Whether it is Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan or Secretariat, you will always have a zealous hatred for anything related to America....I pity you...go crush some grapes!
@MrItaliano1900 - Oh...by the way...I am still waiting fro Ribot's RECORD times???? I guess I can turn blue in the face because there are NO record times for Ribot for you to report which is why you continue evading the subject! I believe there was a horse that had a 54-0 record (the name escapes me) and their name is NEVER mentioned as the greatest horse ever! Why? Because iconic like feats are what merit any sport's figure's place in history! SEC has more of those than ANY horse ever!!!
@MrItaliano1900 It doesn't matter how many victories a horse has in his career. There r several horses in history that were undefeated or had better track records than Ribot (who most people have never heard of). The problem is that all of these great horses never set any track records or world records. THAT'S what distinquishes the legends. That's why people still remember Mark Spitz & Michael Phelps. No one knows any other swimmer's names...though I'm sure they won several races. Legends EXCEL.
@cmf4321 this bad habit of only time considers to be typical American. It is not a swimming competition. There are too many variables in a horse race. There are many typical terrain, obstacles, weather conditions. In the ranking holds a British company Timeform, Ribot is the third in the standings, Secretariat is not considered. Write Timeform on wikipedia. I agree in saying that this ranking is ridiculous. Seabird compared to Ribot is a donkey. He won only in France!
@MrItaliano1900 When u state that "Secretariat is not considered" when he broke & HOLDS track records, including the highest honor, the TC, in which he broke all 3 track records, 2 haven't been broken in 39 years, 1 is still the WORLD record, & THE ONLY ATHLETE in history that speeded up (2X) an entire race while breaking EACH QUARTER MILE track record & a WORLD RECORD for speed..I'm listening to ur emotions & not ur logic. NO HORSE or HUMAN in history has ever duplicated his supernatural speed.
@cmf4321 Italians are not patriotic, it is an individualistic people, everyone thinks their own interests. If I say that Ribot is the best because I have studied this. I do not hate the United States or other crap, I love the U.S., I lived 2 years in Los Angeles. It 's my favorite country.
@MrItaliano1900 BTW, look it up. Only Secretariat is considered the perfect horse. He is the only athlete that accomplished the unbelievable feat of increasing his speed throughout an entire race. BTW, how many world records did Ribot break & now hold...& how many races did he win by 31 lengths? Sec was running at 36 mph at the Belmont & ended at 39 mph! Sec set the world record for EACH quarter mile AND the world record. No horse has EVER done that. Google it. (He also speeded UP at the KD).
@cmf4321 Record ???? what records you speak ?? ... a mile and a half, Secretariat records 2.25. This is the time that many horses do. example. "Danedream" Prix Arc de Triomphe 2010 ( 2.24) . "Bago" Prix Arc de Triomphe 2004 ( 2.25) . This is just one example. But there are many horses whit this time. Tell me more records Secretariat and I tell you another 100 horses that have done better. My God .... shut up!
@cmf4321 - Gentlemen, please don't waaste your time with this idiot. He will NOT SPEAK to SEC's records because RIBOT HAS NONE!!! Furthermore, ANYONE who thinks "times" don't matter in a race is a complete fool and blind to the fact that this is, indeed, "racing" and world class times are what seperates the men from the boys! Secretariat stretched BEYOND the limits of what a horse can accomplish on a racetrack, defying physics in every sense and EVERYONE knows it...including "MrItaliano"!!!
Ronnie never had to use his whip because Secretariat loved to run.. I saw him run in 1973 at the age of 12 and he was so magnificent. I had never seen a horse race before that one but when he stepped onto the track the crowd went wild and he pranced his way to the starting gate as if to say." I own this track and the day is mine".. and it certainly was. I watched every race he ever ran after that and when he won at Belmont taking home the coveted triple crown win it was a glorious day..
@TheMeriale yes i bet you have some wonderful memories and the best part of all is that you was able to watch and experience it , i however just have to watch the recordings of this great horse great champion that he truly is
i think there maybe some horse that might be like him again as theres always someone amongst the crowd who is a true star in the making
i'm sure he or she maybe out there to come in time but only time will tell of course but theres always someone and some horse
We saw this happen on our TV set in Virginia as newlyweds. We were watching out of curiosity and then suddenly we knew we were watching something we'd likely never see again. I knew more about horses than my husband but I told him that this had to be the horse of the century, even greater than Man'O War. We were stunned, speechless and he brought tears to your eyes, the most magnificent athlete I ever saw.
@dth7577 I watched all three races with my father in Pittsburgh, ever since seeing the races with Secretariat I have been obsessed with learning everything about him.
What absolutely blows me away is seeing 16 people dislike watching a miracle unfold. They will NEVER see anything like this again in history. It's been 38 years since it happened, still a world record & Secretariat was in his youth. Good luck to those who think this was just another race horse. You'll never match anything in your lifetimes that will match this level of supernatural & you'll never achieve ANYTHING if you can't recognize & appreciate greatness in others.
cmf, I also watch Big Red every day on youtube, have a wall of pictures of him and consider him my obsession. I'm glad to hear others do that. I can't get enough of watching him race and reading about him. He and his story just touches the very core of all of us who love to witness the pure transcendant awesomeness he was. Mr Anonymous was very blessed by having been there. I was about the same age when I saw on TV. God Bless
@mccrimcrum - To all who clearly comprehend and appreciate Secetariat's supernatural athletic ability....SEC is irrefutable proof that there IS a GOD in heaven because nature could NEVER conjure up such a PERFECT thoroughbred!!! Unquestionably, the greatest race horse EVER with this Belmont Stakes run defying the laws of physics and stretching beyond the standard limits of what a thorouhbred horse should be able to achieve!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 Amen Brotha! That is exactly how I feel, you articulated it very well. We can look around us everyday to witness God's creation, we can see God's love in the eyes of our pets, but Sec was like an exclamation point. Thank you for your great words.
@mccrimcrum I agree:-) Sec didn't just show us what supernatural looks like...he showed us what a miracle of nature could do. He is also my obsession:-) I have photos of him in every room. His performance in the TC will never be repeated again by any horse or human athlete. He defied the laws of nature...and made us cry. I've read people's comments who weren't even born...& watching on here still brings people to tears... 38 yrs later! He had it ALL. God's true miracle on earth. Nice 2 meet U!
@cmf4321 - It is virtually incomprehensible to think that SEC still holds ALL 3 TC records (incl. a tie with 2 horses for the Preakness) after 140 years encompassing approx. 420 races & 3,000+ horses. Putting the Belmont Stakes aside for a moment, imagine incresing your speed from start to finish with each quarter fraction FASTER than the preceding quarter...who does that including a FINAL 1/2 mile in 46-2/5 seconds after running a FULL MILE!!! No doubt, NO HORSE could possibly match SEC!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 That's why it blows me away when people start comparing him to other racehorses. No human has ever matched what he did...let alone other race horses. People compare him to MOW and others because they had won more races in their careers against inferior competition. Most never set ANY records. And the ones that have no longer hold them. Secretariat did the unimaginable at the age of 3...and no one comes close. Most horses have never won the TC...let alone break all 3 records!
@Dannykeith46 That blows my mind too. No horse has done that, increased their speed as they go. I've tried watching other horse races of todays "greats", none of them capture me like Sec's racing. Like cmf said, it's just because he was the total package, intelligence, personality etc. That's why we love him. The Secretariat Festival is this w/e in Paris, KY. I sooo wanted to go. Maybe next year.
I worked at Belmont and got to see that race I was 17. It will live with me till I die. Thanks for posting. There will never be a horse like BIG RED in my life time and that is ok by me. RIP RED I miss you. tear : (
@MrAnonymous2012 I gasped when I read your comment. You were there??? I was around your age and if I could give ANYTHING to go back in time...I would. My biggest regret was not seeing Secretariat in person. The Belmont...I can only imagine..I watch Secretariat everyday on youtube. He's my life's obsession. To me, he is THE supernatural being. The perfect "10".
@MrAnonymous2012 I saw Secretariat's Belmont on TV when I was a teenager - my Mom cried (me too)! Why do you suppose he & his races move so many to tears? He simply caused the whole Nation to fall in love w/him!
@nin12dog i think what it is because he has such an amazing back story with penny and also the fact that i think he is such a likeable sportsman as in his case a horse as just like a person with a big and warm hearted nature i think this is why so many cry as you truly feel the power of the emotion and also in what she penny and he secretariat achieved in such a short period of time and we truly love the story more and of course all involved especially the horse
What an athletic performance of greatness. I remember seeing the race live on a black & white TV and near the end of the race, you only saw Secretariat on the screen--he was that far ahead of the others. Only time I have seen that. Still in awe.
Secretariat was tha Michael Jordan of tha horse world, every jockey wanted their horse to be like Secretariat . Personally , I don't think that there will be another Triple Crown winner EVER ! RIP SECRETARIAT !
I think the one thing that is overlooked and what made Big Red the greatest horse of all times was that he united everybody. We all have our beliefs and views of the world and rarely, if ever do we all stand together as one. I was 8yrs old and remember this day watching it on TV. I believe the world was watching and we all stood together as one with Secretariat.
I was reading the passage in the bible job 39:19-24 and I was think god had planned for secretariat just by what god said secretariat is gods creation by purpose he is 1 true miracle we humans may never see again
Look at Secretariat before the race. Moving at maybe a fast walk, head held high, looking at the crowd looking at him, how he pauses for effect before entering the gate. The confidence, arrogance, and utter disdain for the competition is no different then an Ali or Jordan. The 73 Belmont was an athlete showing the world his supreme artistry and talent. That was his Game 7, bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, down by 3, Home Run to win it all moment, and he crushed it. Secretariat was a STAR
@bbwalk100 no there is no such thing as god that is why animals are amazing because they don't know what god is , Big Red was a amazing horse but he did not know what your god is , anyway so many animals had become extinct because humans think they can do whatever they what to animals because humans think they are better, which we are not.
@SuperNikki1 - to BOTH OF YOU...its 70 - 90 years (GOD Willing!) on this earth and an eternity SOMEWHERE ELSE so you might BOTH want to start re-thinking your position because you can't hire some smooth talking lawyer to get you off the hook when it's your time to go! There is a GOD and Sec was one of his GREATEST GIFTS to us....the unquestionable greatest horse ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 Big Red was a amazing horse but your god had nothing to do with creating him or any other life, I guess your god did not like Ferdinand who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby he was sent to the slaughter house. When you died you don't go anywhere else, you don't go to heaven or hell because these places don't exist.
@SuperNikki1 - It is not for us to question any supreme being for we cannot possibly fathom his ominous intent. I respect your beliefs and you should respect mine....let's leave it at that. NOW....back to Secretariat....GOD or not......his statistical achievement's regarding speed across vast distances easily support his irrefutable position as the greatest horse ever!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 I think that Secretariat is the only supernatural creature born on this earth. He was the ONLY perfect "10". And his performance on June 9, 1973 is the only athletic performance in HISTORY that brought an entire nation to tears...and if you read the comments...IT STILL DOES...even to people who weren't alive or old enough to see what we witnessed that MIRACLE day. It will never happen again by any horse...or human. People cried because we saw a miracle.
@cmf4321 There is something about Secretariat, which causes people to become emotional - maybe his beauty? or the fact he was Kind? or his keen intellect? He was extremely SMART, a strategist, and ran his own races. He was like a Human, but more Noble. I think this is why he remains so beloved.
@nin12dog I agree:-) However, I place him above all humans. I think of Sec as the miracle on Earth. No human had it ALL. Secretariat did:-) What he did in his performances was supernatural. No human athlete or horse accomplished his feat of speeding up throughout an entire race while breaking records each quarter mile.
It defied the laws of nature. He was the "perfect 10"..beauty, temperment, confidence, intelligence, speed, largest heart & build. True greatness that man can't duplicate.
@nin12dog I love hearing the stories about his intelligence and 'playing around' with Eddie Sweat. He was the MAN and he knew it. I watch Secretariat videos almost daily.....just to feel good about life in general.
This athletic performance will never be seen again...by any horse or human. What we witnessed on June 9, 1973 is the only supernatural event ever recorded. Thank God! He gave us hope that miracles can happen. Maybe only once...but it is an inspiration to all of us.
I don't know what happened in 1973? As someone said God was probabaly involved because he also created Red Rum. Totally different horse, different race and everything and no comparison intended except that God took a direct interest in both. Check out the Grand National 1973 posting. Thanks for both. I can think of few people as inspirational as these horses.
Trying to break Secretariat’s record margin would be nothing short of dumb. Just saying it is dumb and way too cocky, if indeed they said it. I haven’t read that anywhere. It would be stupid and arrogant to purposely push a horse to break that record. End of quote. A answer by Haskins when asked if Big Brown would or could break the 'KINGS' record.
@rscarbro100 - Consider that NO horse has ever rode a faster time than 2:25 on ANY 1-1/2 mile DIRT surface since the beginning of this sport which is still 5 lengths short of Big Red's time....with Turcotte hand riding him the WHOLE 1-1/2 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely unfathomable and nothing short of miraculous!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dannykeith46 No horse ever broke the 2:25 barrier on dirt my good man. If not mistaken Prove Out has the second fastest time in 2:25 4/5. Thats 9 lengths.
@Dannykeith46 Red Smith from a article to the swift said if asked by Turcotte he would have broken the world record which was done on grass by Fiddle Isle in 2:23 flat at Santa Anita Park in 1970. My friend I think he need not Synthetic to get another 2 seconds faster. That old dirt from Belmont Park would have been sufficent enough.(smile)
In winning the Triple Crown, Secretariat set a world-record 2:24, breaking Gallant Man's Belmont mark by an incredible 2 3/5 seconds.
"He's the greatest horse that has yet developed in this century," said Holly Hughes, the senior trainer of America who saw Man o' War run and saddled the 1916 Kentucky Derby winner. "Yes, he's the Horse of the Century." After Secretariat won the Preakness, Pimlico general manager Chick Lang said, "It is as if God decided to create the perfect horse."
@Shaynavendela If I'm correct,I believe he was put to rest in late 2010. I could however be very wrong. If you find otherwise I will gladly stand corrected
Have you given the horse its strenght or clothed its neck with a flowing mane?.........It paws the earth and rejoices in its strenght........Fiercely it paws the ground and rushes forward into battle when the trumpet blows! Job 39:19 - Movie "Secretariat"
secretariat was the one who inspired me to be a jockey and just thinking about him makes me cry and he's still alive in my heart and most race horse its their legs head and heart thats buried but secretariats was buried whole rest in peace you beautiful horse legend plus secretariat deserves to be alive for ever and never be neglected i wish every one who owned helped and actually touched him and respected him was still alive
secretariat was the one who inspired me to be a jockey and just thinking about him makes me cry and he's still alive in my heart and most race horse its their legs head and heart thats buried but secretariats was buried whole rest in peace you beautiful horse legend
@coolbreeze922 The two horses closest to Secretariat's World Record Belmont time of 2:24 flat are Easy Goer and AP Indy at 2:26 flat. They are a full 2 seconds behind Secretariat and that equals 10 lengths. In 38 years after him and 107 years before him, no horse has gotten within 10 lengths of Secretariat in the 1 1/2 mile distance.......does that answer your question? Actually the horse with the 2nd best time to Secretariat's Derby Record 1 1/4 mile time, is Sham at 1:59 4/5.
@LesPaulCustom79 So "once-in-a-century" is out. But really, your reply is immensely left-brained. I think I like it! My original comment was just another way of saying Secretariat kicks major arse, and you reply by giving stats. How did you know I like stats so much? Well done.
@LesPaulCustom79 This is so excellent! It not only reflects Secretariat's achievement, it gives DESERVED PRAISE to Sham, a Wonderful, Gallant Horse who gave HIS ALL trying to compete with Secretariat! It is sad for Sham that He was essentially broken in the Belmont, and never raced again - I feel bad for him. No one gives Him the Respect he's due! He was a terrific Racehorse! He would have been the Trip Crown winner in '73, except for the Phenomenon, Secretariat. Thanks for pointing this out.
I saw the movie last night and it made me cry. when I saw this clip, I cried again. Very touching horse with humane qualities. Thank you Secretariat for letting us enjoy you.
There was something beyond this world about that breathtaking horse. I love him. He gave so much to all of us. Through him I behold true greatness. He is still an inspiration to me and always will be. An inspiration to be sure.
You know they later found out he had inherited a trait from his family line that occasionally shows up -- his heart was 2 1/2 times that of a normal horse which gave him exceptional power with large oxygen and blood pumping capabilities. So he had a huge advantage. When they autopsied Sham he also had a larger than normal heart, but only 1 1/2 times normal.
Every time I see footage of this race, the goosebumps appear. Are we sure he didn't eat hay with a side of jet fuel that morning? ;) I can't even imagine how great Ron Turcotte felt sitting on top of that magnificent animal.
Best video EVER!!!! Watched these races as an 8 year old girl from the back of my Hobby Horse bouncying and screaming the whole way tell mom threatened to throw it out...Still brings tears to my eyes to watch videos of him run. Absolute perfection in motion.
Thank you for this video. I will never forget watching the race on TV - I was a senior in high school - and I had goosebumps all over. It was a stupendous feat by a tremendous equine athlete and his jockey. A once in a lifetime horse, for sure.
i hope i can see the triple crown won in my life time. because i have never seen a triple crown win. Only replays of it being won in the past. I hope we can get a horse like Secretariat to come along and win it.
I am into trains and buses, but this will ALWAYS be #1 on my channel for favorites. No machine can ever compare. What an amazing animal, what an amazing being. Unfortunately I was too young to remember this exactly, but I always remember the name Secretariat represented GREATNESS, and this vid is proof of that. Thank you for posting this, so we can see what this MAGNIFICENT animal was about. There will NEVER be another Secretariat, God already blessed us with His creation. He was truly the best.
@SuperNikki1 You made laugh all you want but no animal knows what a god is. That what makes them so special, and that is why so many animals have become extinct because your belief in god makes the human race think that they can do what they want with animals.
~ secretariat is the greatest horse to ever live. ~ and im not gonna say WAS the greatest horse, because no horse can touch him so he IS the greatest horse to ever live
He simply did something better that any horse in the annals of racing...The big lug could run like the wind...Thanks for the memories old fellow...R.I.P. Secretariat...
how could u dislike this video?...that horse was literally a machine im glad i was raised around the sport of horse racing im probably the only black male that is interested in this video lol...but i can watch it 100 times and never get tired of it..

Thank you.

Does anyone know in what year where aluminium horseshoes introduced into American throughbred racing (which allowed the horses to run faster) and also what the speed advantage was? I doubt the difference would be enough for MOW, Seabird, Ribot or Phar Lap to catch Secretariat, but would still like to know...
eckythimble 1 month ago
@eckythimble Aluminium horseshoe, jetpack, it doesn't matter. No one was catching Secretariat that day.
mareckbamf 1 month ago
@eckythimble About 1940 aluminum shoes were used on a regular basis. They were made to have less strain on a horse hoof and legs. The were not made to make a horses run faster. How much faster they made a horse run better I do not know but never hear one old time track horseman make a issue out of it. So the difference could not have been much at all. Its just another tool out of many the MOW fans try to use to justify why MOW never ran close to the times Secrtetariat did
rscarbro100 1 month ago
@rscarbro100 Thanks, I was actually asking because I was wondering what Native Dancer ran on. Somewhere else on the net I found this: "A lot of old trainers estimated that over 5 furlongs the difference between shoes and plates was about 6 lengths." If you adjust MOWs best 1 1/4 mile time by 10 furlongs at 0.20s per length then his best adjusted time comes to be 1:59:40 - the same as Secretariat ran the Derby, but which Secretariat himself later beat twice.
eckythimble 1 month ago
@eckythimble Charles Hatton said the tracks of the past perphaps 1 second slower than when Secretariat ran. With that statement he added Secretariat faster If that was true the difference between shoes and plates were 5 lengths over 5 furlongs then Hatton would have known and would not have said Secretariat faster. If you found it on the Net you better check the source and exactly who those trainers were. I suspect it was a Man 0' War johnnycomelately.
rscarbro100 1 month ago
@rscarbro100 Well I got the quote from a UK racing forum site, which was purely discussing horseshoes (steel v. alumunium v. plastic), not Man O War, tho' the original source is unclear. Surely some mathematical adjustment must be made from 1920s to 1970s or else do we accept MOW's then brilliant 2.01.80 for the Travers Stakes was really nothing much? The way Secretariat hit the post still pulling away I'm certain he's clear #1, but MOW probably still better than the rest.
eckythimble 3 weeks ago
@eckythimble There is no doubt alumunium shoes are safer and quicker than steel shoes. Its got to be minor though. Has a old time track horseman ever stated it made a big differnece in judging the speed of any 2 horses or more? I have never read where it has. A horse with great stamina and speed no doubt Man 0' War was. Probably had better stamina than speed but both were there.I will not argue he was #2 of all time. We all wish we could have seen all his races.
rscarbro100 3 weeks ago

@Dannykeith46 Danny (and everyone else) try and stay calm and don't respond to the provocations. As of 11/10/2011 the Italians have destroyed themselves and are going back to the stone age.

He paws fiercely rejoicing in his strength

Secretariat.
He was so impelling, physically, emotional, and spiritually. What a guy!
Everyone has an opinion on why he was so wonderful, but he transcends opinion.
As they said in the movie, "He's not just a horse, he's Secretariat."
Thank God for Secretariat!
mrsrichardpeck 3 months ago
The main reason Secretariat is so great is that he is the product of two noble but nothing really special Sire and Dame, Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal. He was bred at a smaller than average horse racing farm in rural Virginia (which produced back-to-back Derby and Belmont Winners, by the way). The offspring of Bold Ruler were not supposed to be able to go distances of over 1 mile, yet Secretariat has held the WORLD RECORD for the distance of 1 1/2 miles on dirt for 38+ years.
LesPaulCustom79 3 months ago
The reason so many people love Secretariat is that he reminds us of how great America once was.....contrary to the subversive efforts of the current moron living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Secretariat helped to unify and heal our country when we were coming out of the quagmire called South Vietnam in 1973. We need another Secretariat.....because all the politicians are just a bunch of self-serving, narcissist, assclowns, and will never produce a hero.

Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@Dannykeith46 People of shit like you should be killed, your ignorance is really ridiculous .. Everyone knows that Ribot is the best horse in history. You can check on the internet.

Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@Dannykeith46 it's useless for you to fret, it's written in history books that Ribot is the strongest horse of all time. Maybe for you it 's a problem because it's not an American horse. But this does not matter to people. Secretariat was never released by the United States, Ribot has won in 3 different countries, all the most important races, including the most important race Arc De Triomphe in Paris, for two times. but you do not know where is Paris on the map, you probably have never traveled
MrItaliano1900 3 months ago

MrItaliano1900 3 months ago
Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 - Who really cares what you Europeans think? If you knew anything you would also understand SEC was SICK in two of those defeats, one of the defeats he WON but was disqualified for "brushing" a horse and another defeat he posted a remarkable 2:26-3/5 time for 1-1/2 miles IN THE MUD, only to have Prove Out post a sensational 2:25-45 to best him. I would also like to know why your Panzie European horses need "MONTHS" between races when our great horses race every 2 - 4 weeks?
Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@Dannykeith46 ..an American horse has participated in 21 races, he won 16 and you consider him the strongest in history hahaha. Ribot has participated in 16 races and he has never lost. L'Arc de Triomphe is a race where participating the strongest horse of the planet, and Ribot has won this race 2 times. Secretariat compared to Ribot is considered a donkey, by any expert.
MrItaliano1900 3 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 - To continue my prior post your TC is run over 3 months (if not longer) while ours is over FIVE WEEKS! Ribot ran 16 races in 3 years while SEC ran 21 races in 2 years! Get the point, your "powder puff" horses need "eternal-like rest" between races. SEC once ran TWO 1-1/2 mile races in 8 days...Ribot would have crumbled under such stress! It figures since you are from a continenet whose sheer existence today is only due to America saving your sorry ass in WWII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 - In closing, why don't you disappear from this forum which "Kierkegaard73" was creative and kind enough to post for horse racing enthusiasts who sincerely appreciate Sec's supernaturral ability. You NOR any SEC detractor are not worthy to post on this forum due to your disgusting jealousy and hatred towards America. Whether it is Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan or Secretariat, you will always have a zealous hatred for anything related to America....I pity you...go crush some grapes!
Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 - Oh...by the way...I am still waiting fro Ribot's RECORD times???? I guess I can turn blue in the face because there are NO record times for Ribot for you to report which is why you continue evading the subject! I believe there was a horse that had a 54-0 record (the name escapes me) and their name is NEVER mentioned as the greatest horse ever! Why? Because iconic like feats are what merit any sport's figure's place in history! SEC has more of those than ANY horse ever!!!
Dannykeith46 3 months ago
@MrItaliano1900 It doesn't matter how many victories a horse has in his career. There r several horses in history that were undefeated or had better track records than Ribot (who most people have never heard of). The problem is that all of these great horses never set any track records or world records. THAT'S what distinquishes the legends. That's why people still remember Mark Spitz & Michael Phelps. No one knows any other swimmer's names...though I'm sure they won several races. Legends EXCEL.
cmf4321 2 months ago

Dannykeith46 4 months ago

Dannykeith46 4 months ago
@Dannykeith46 That's why it blows me away when people start comparing him to other racehorses. No human has ever matched what he did...let alone other race horses. People compare him to MOW and others because they had won more races in their careers against inferior competition. Most never set ANY records. And the ones that have no longer hold them. Secretariat did the unimaginable at the age of 3...and no one comes close. Most horses have never won the TC...let alone break all 3 records!
cmf4321 4 months ago
@Dannykeith46 That blows my mind too. No horse has done that, increased their speed as they go. I've tried watching other horse races of todays "greats", none of them capture me like Sec's racing. Like cmf said, it's just because he was the total package, intelligence, personality etc. That's why we love him. The Secretariat Festival is this w/e in Paris, KY. I sooo wanted to go. Maybe next year.

Dannykeith46 5 months ago
@Dannykeith46 Big Red was a amazing horse but your god had nothing to do with creating him or any other life, I guess your god did not like Ferdinand who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby he was sent to the slaughter house. When you died you don't go anywhere else, you don't go to heaven or hell because these places don't exist.
SuperNikki1 5 months ago
@SuperNikki1 - It is not for us to question any supreme being for we cannot possibly fathom his ominous intent. I respect your beliefs and you should respect mine....let's leave it at that. NOW....back to Secretariat....GOD or not......his statistical achievement's regarding speed across vast distances easily support his irrefutable position as the greatest horse ever!!!!!!
Dannykeith46 5 months ago
@Dannykeith46 I think that Secretariat is the only supernatural creature born on this earth. He was the ONLY perfect "10". And his performance on June 9, 1973 is the only athletic performance in HISTORY that brought an entire nation to tears...and if you read the comments...IT STILL DOES...even to people who weren't alive or old enough to see what we witnessed that MIRACLE day. It will never happen again by any horse...or human. People cried because we saw a miracle.
cmf4321 5 months ago
@cmf4321 - ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dannykeith46 5 months ago
@cmf4321 There is something about Secretariat, which causes people to become emotional - maybe his beauty? or the fact he was Kind? or his keen intellect? He was extremely SMART, a strategist, and ran his own races. He was like a Human, but more Noble. I think this is why he remains so beloved.
nin12dog 4 months ago 18
@nin12dog I agree:-) However, I place him above all humans. I think of Sec as the miracle on Earth. No human had it ALL. Secretariat did:-) What he did in his performances was supernatural. No human athlete or horse accomplished his feat of speeding up throughout an entire race while breaking records each quarter mile.
It defied the laws of nature. He was the "perfect 10"..beauty, temperment, confidence, intelligence, speed, largest heart & build. True greatness that man can't duplicate.
cmf4321 4 months ago
@nin12dog I love hearing the stories about his intelligence and 'playing around' with Eddie Sweat. He was the MAN and he knew it. I watch Secretariat videos almost daily.....just to feel good about life in general.

This athletic performance will never be seen again...by any horse or human. What we witnessed on June 9, 1973 is the only supernatural event ever recorded. Thank God! He gave us hope that miracles can happen. Maybe only once...but it is an inspiration to all of us.
cmf4321 5 months ago
I don't know what happened in 1973? As someone said God was probabaly involved because he also created Red Rum. Totally different horse, different race and everything and no comparison intended except that God took a direct interest in both. Check out the Grand National 1973 posting. Thanks for both. I can think of few people as inspirational as these horses.

Steve Haskins Quote:
Trying to break Secretariat’s record margin would be nothing short of dumb. Just saying it is dumb and way too cocky, if indeed they said it. I haven’t read that anywhere. It would be stupid and arrogant to purposely push a horse to break that record. End of quote. A answer by Haskins when asked if Big Brown would or could break the 'KINGS' record.
rscarbro100 5 months ago
@rscarbro100 - Consider that NO horse has ever rode a faster time than 2:25 on ANY 1-1/2 mile DIRT surface since the beginning of this sport which is still 5 lengths short of Big Red's time....with Turcotte hand riding him the WHOLE 1-1/2 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely unfathomable and nothing short of miraculous!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dannykeith46 5 months ago
@Dannykeith46 No horse ever broke the 2:25 barrier on dirt my good man. If not mistaken Prove Out has the second fastest time in 2:25 4/5. Thats 9 lengths.
rscarbro100 5 months ago
@rscarbro100 - Correct Indeed. If that was a synthetic turf surface, Sec's time might have been a FULL 2 seconds faster!!!!!!!!!!
Dannykeith46 5 months ago
@Dannykeith46 Red Smith from a article to the swift said if asked by Turcotte he would have broken the world record which was done on grass by Fiddle Isle in 2:23 flat at Santa Anita Park in 1970. My friend I think he need not Synthetic to get another 2 seconds faster. That old dirt from Belmont Park would have been sufficent enough.(smile)
rscarbro100 5 months ago
In winning the Triple Crown, Secretariat set a world-record 2:24, breaking Gallant Man's Belmont mark by an incredible 2 3/5 seconds.
"He's the greatest horse that has yet developed in this century," said Holly Hughes, the senior trainer of America who saw Man o' War run and saddled the 1916 Kentucky Derby winner. "Yes, he's the Horse of the Century." After Secretariat won the Preakness, Pimlico general manager Chick Lang said, "It is as if God decided to create the perfect horse."

I can't decide if Secretariat was a once-in-a-century horse, a once-in-a-millennium horse, or a once-in-a-forever horse.
coolbreeze922 6 months ago 22
@coolbreeze922 The two horses closest to Secretariat's World Record Belmont time of 2:24 flat are Easy Goer and AP Indy at 2:26 flat. They are a full 2 seconds behind Secretariat and that equals 10 lengths. In 38 years after him and 107 years before him, no horse has gotten within 10 lengths of Secretariat in the 1 1/2 mile distance.......does that answer your question? Actually the horse with the 2nd best time to Secretariat's Derby Record 1 1/4 mile time, is Sham at 1:59 4/5.
LesPaulCustom79 6 months ago
@LesPaulCustom79 So "once-in-a-century" is out. But really, your reply is immensely left-brained. I think I like it! My original comment was just another way of saying Secretariat kicks major arse, and you reply by giving stats. How did you know I like stats so much? Well done.
coolbreeze922 6 months ago
@LesPaulCustom79 This is so excellent! It not only reflects Secretariat's achievement, it gives DESERVED PRAISE to Sham, a Wonderful, Gallant Horse who gave HIS ALL trying to compete with Secretariat! It is sad for Sham that He was essentially broken in the Belmont, and never raced again - I feel bad for him. No one gives Him the Respect he's due! He was a terrific Racehorse! He would have been the Trip Crown winner in '73, except for the Phenomenon, Secretariat. Thanks for pointing this out.

Unicornfaeriedustart 6 months ago
You know they later found out he had inherited a trait from his family line that occasionally shows up -- his heart was 2 1/2 times that of a normal horse which gave him exceptional power with large oxygen and blood pumping capabilities. So he had a huge advantage. When they autopsied Sham he also had a larger than normal heart, but only 1 1/2 times normal.
