Did gould even LIKE wagner? Too feely! Where's the COUNTERPOINT. I'm sure that's floating around in the back of his head somewhere. HE'S NOT EVEN HUMMING! Probably tuned out and thinking about ducks or a new pair of gloves or something.
Horowitz was a charlatan! He was the most self aggrandizing pianist of all time! His was a vaudevillian who contributed little to music and much to showmanship. It is insulting to even compare him with Gould who always looked inward to the deeper meaning of music!
@radiokid2 Perhaps! I am in the process of reevaluating horowitz's importance as a musician. I previosly didn't like Horowitz because of his shomanship, but there is a few recordings of his live performances that I do adore!
Secondly, the is indisputably NOT overrated; it is a question of whether you agree with his approach to music. If you do not, you may find him almost repulsive.
What Horowitz did say is that there are not great pianists who are gentiles other than Richter, essentially putting down Gould indirectly
@phospholipasec If we stick to something absolutly relative, meaning that it's only matter of taste, then I totally agree, Glenn Gould is not overrated because nothing can be overrated, with such a point of view. And I like this way of seeing things. But fact is that lots of Gould fans make a universal myth out of him "the greatest pianist of, ...". Saying this put it as something objective; in this case, Gould is absolutely overrated. [...]
@phospholipasec [...] Sorry, but to say that "counterpoint is everything" and to judge composers through this is totally artificial; there's nothing of a genius there, just a bit autistic peronnality. It's would be like to say "green is everything" and judging all the painters by their usage of green. But you're right, it's probably not the good page to discuss this, as it's a transcription. I admit that he has an curious approach of Wagner... understanding, obvisouly, only the counterpoint...
@christopheschuwey86 Lastly, it's ironic of you and ChrisWatch to belittle the genius of a man while on a page of an actual piece that he transcribed...
Have you never listen a piano execution where every sound is thought and meditaded and matureted? Well, listen this link.

@mamadeus081 It's been said that Gould uses the piano to play music and Horowitz uses music to play the piano!

Does anyone know if film footage exists of Gould's final recording; which is as a conductor of this piece for a small ensemble?

Glenn Goulds recording of Siegfried Idyll, was heard by Vladimir Horowitz, after hearing it, told Harold Schonberg, "He played like a stupid ass."
