  • 2:40+ was it Godsmack? :)

  • Not intentionally! :D

  • Glad to hear yours is almost as noisy as mine :d .. today I made a small improvement to that though .. I noticed that when I touched the housing or any switch, I got a lot less noise, so I soldered the back of the pot to a ground connection and that fixed 99% of that problem... don't understand why this wasn't part of the schematic, or I must have missed that :d

  • sounds like the bias is not set correctly. If this is the RANGEMASTER Circuit you need to change the 68k resistor. I usually use a 100k pot and dial it in untill i hear the best tone.

  • Could very well be so, but why do you think so?

  • because the gain on germanium transistors varies from one to another. It seems that you got a good transistor but the tone is not focused. If you bias the pedal correctly you will hear it cleaner and it will have more headroom (it will be louder)

  • @stratman7000 yeah is it so important to have the resistor between 100 and 150 hfe? cause other people told me so, but why?

  • @chojinkid for Rangemaster Circuits... I would say the HFE of the "germanium" should be between 60 ->120 Max for best result, since the Rangemaster is designed for LOW HFE... anything higher and It will distort in a Nasty way.. I would still use a trim pot in place of the 68k resistor to adjust the bias. ymmv

  • @stratman7000 I mailed Klaus the owner of the musikding site and told that the transistor used in their clone"der range" kit is a AC122 or AC128, with an hfe of 70-80, haven't really understood if they send you either of them randomly or what, but are they good for a clone of the rangemaster? the guy of this video most likely have one of these 2 since he seems to have got the components from musikding too

  • @chojinkid as I say, Now a days it is hard to know for sure if the transistors they sent you are in that HFE range... What I would suggest is get info on how to meassure HFE or a transitor tester... then you will be good. I would still suggest the trim pot for the 68k resistor to adjust the bias. You can do the same circuit with Silicon transistors with low HFE like 2n222 which will give you similar results... but The "germanium" has adds some "magic" to this pedal... But it has to be 60>120

  • @stratman7000 thanks for the info, I'm still undecided between this one or attempting to clone the pete cornish TB-83 for more modern tone, the latter is gonna be a tough one to reproduce anyway considering that I know nothing about electronics and all I gotta do is get the right components and have a friend of mine bluid it for me.

  • @chojinkid you should give the range master a try.... Building pedals is fun. takes time and a little knowledge of electronics but the end result is priceless

  • whats the gain power on this?? is it more than 36db or less??

  • where can you buy this kit or get hold of the circuit diagram?

  • There's a link in the description.

  • Just built this pedal and love it. If you're considering it, don't be put off by the single dial- there are loads of gorgeous complex tones in there thanks to the germanium transistor.

I can tell I'm just going to want to leave it plugged in and on from now on.

  • Let me repost that: Took me 5 hours to solder it, can't remember how long it took to drill the holes, bit I love the result! I loke the 'Classic' setting the most :) ... I chose for the small box, which was very hard to get everything inside :s (no place for a battery).

  • Drilling was the hardest part. Partly because of my crappy drill. :)

  • I can imagine, I was lucky my dad had all the right tools, so it was just: mark, position, pull the arm of the drilling machine, insert next drill :D

  • it did make the clean sound good as well kinda like a little overdriven sound
