This is nothing new. I worked in a nursing home 30 years ago and it was common practise for them to accept 'patient's from the Ontario Hospital (Psych Hosp) to fill the beds. Some of these people were madly insane and had to be kept medicated 24-7. 4 men were extremely violent and were on a locked wing all by themselves. It was horrible. They shoved the old folkes around and the supervisors and owner of the home didn't give a shit as long as the $ rolled in. Keep your folks at home if you can!!
Nursing homes are not equipped for younger healthier aggressive mentally ill people that can cause a great deal of damage. This is outrageous, I hope things have since changed.
I worked in a nursing facility which admitted prisoners released from prison because of health problems, gang members (Bloods) & a myriad of middle-aged drug abusers from their mid-thirties through their 50's. Some of them were violent & they were often very disruptive (taking drugs & having hookers in their rooms). They don't belong in nursing homes with elderly & fragile people.
Staff was trained to deal with with aggressive behavior? If this place is anything like my mine, they most certainly have not been properly trained. The only kind of training we get is a manual that no one ever has time to read. If someone's behavior is out of control in the middle of the night, it takes an act of congress to get them out of the facility. The police won't come until someone is actually hurt.
I worked in a retirement home that had a special unit for Alzheimer's. I'm proud to say these residents were very carefully monitored, staff was plentiful and well-paid, the facility was exceptionally safe, and the residents were given much one-on-one love and attention. I enjoyed working there and hope this facility will set a trend for the treatment of people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. I'm so sad for this man and at hearing stories like these-there are too many of them.

This is a new Money Maker for nursing homes because a lot of the times these individuals who are mentally unstable have no family or their family have disowned them so in a manner of speaking the "State" owns them and where could they possibly go?.... Nursing Homes! Who Pays for it? The "State" or yourself however you wanna look at it. Some nursing homes (Not All) Just wanna fill a bed and get money coming through their door. Elderly Health Care is a very scary subject that needs reform.
fined about 32, 000?! Are they crazy , a man lost his life due to a nursey home carelessness. They should have been fined no less than a quarter of a million.
Mentally ill should not be mixed in a nursing home with elderly patients. We recently had a case in our city where a 44 year old man, already murdered a woman and placed her body in a septic tank, was released from the state hospital and placed in a nursing home. He sexually abused a 97 year old female!
Mentally ill people resent you for helping them for some reason . You can't help them unless you are trained to do so. But even then they never recover
That's not always the case. Maybe the kind of "help" you tried to give was not what they considered help. Actually, I've met a lot of mentally ill people (I work with them) who GREATLY appreciate help. And people don't need to be trained to show kindness. A smile and the question, "How are you?" means a lot. If they respond ,"Not good," (which I've never heard them say,) you can say, "I'm sorry that you suffer." or something similarly.
had a friend that all sorts promise as a child became a med student, He had a breakdown at 22 . I took him in when he was 23 . I worked as an engineer in manfacturing I managed to get him a job in the warehouse boxing equipment. He did ok for awhile but he started to fall asleep at work . The warehouse manager helped him through this . I helped him get a car and that was ok for awhile untill he got drunk and wrecked the car. He attacked me in my car trying to help him. I was ok .
There is a difference from being mentally ill and crazy willing to beat a 77-year-old man to death, the trick is finding out who's who before something goes tragically wrong.
