You need to look up fascism and totalitarianism. We are not that although we are close. We fall more under the following forms of Oligarchy: Plutocracy or Corporatocracy. Back in the days of ancient Greece they believed that given enough time ALL democracies would become oligarchies. It happened to them and to combat it they decided to make their democracy consist of random people who were qualified, not (legally - thx SCOTUS - Checks and balances failure!) bribed officials.
