  • This is one of many recent uncontained failures of the GE-CF6. The turbine discs have a design fault that causes extreme stress in the No.1 HP turbine disc which over time develops a fatigue fracture and explodes.

    This was actually a ground test because the pilots were reporting the No.1 engine was lagging in performance. The failure thankfully happened on the ground.

    The aircraft was written off.

    Makes me worried to go on the 767, gimme a Rolls powered one any day!

  • this was a ground engine test where the engine was tested to failure. no=one was injured because there was no-one on the plane and it wasn't even flying.

  • @davbob I would check your facts, if they were testing an engine to destruction why would they do it on a plane, that does not make sense they would do it in a test cell at the engine factory during development.
