i do work things out by ear, but sometimes i like pregiven chords more, i dont want the exact notes, just a chord, then i make my own song out of it

I don't care how many strings you have on your bass . . you know you want to play guitar but you're not good enough or dont' have the looks, etc . . .

Just admit it and you'll feel better and start playing your 4 string bass in the background. Unless you can play solos like Jeff Berlin, don't even attempt.

Seeing this piece was written for 4 strings, it makes no difference if you have 5 or 6 strings; extra strings are redundant. In fact it would make things harder, because you need to constantly mute those strings. This is then harder than a guitar because bass strings are much further apart. Shane's post was also criticising you Gary for saying guitars are better. I play both, bass is harder - you should think more about harmony so you compliment the sound, not just play root notes like a lamer.

I just don't like 6 string bass players who are not playing bass and doing their job, but instead really think they are guitar players.

If they sounded good, that would be great. But most don't. Most bass players can't even master 4 strings, .. forget 5 or 6.

Thats true, but could also be said of "musicians" of every instrument. Few can barely play the piano properly. You get people like Elton John with very basic knowledge of chords, yet are often heralded as some musical genius.

Anyway, forget 4,5 or 6 string basses... have a look at the user jeffowen2 - with a 7-string bassist like that, you don't even need a guitarist!
