I think materialism is when you want want want for yourself...this is about the unselfish love of first, a mother for her family and then of a son for his mom who may not make it through the night. He just wanted to see her smile and he knew that those shoes ould make her smile, not because she would have new shoes, but because they came from her little boy. one of the last Christmas gifts I bought my Mom before she died was a pair of Christmas shoes. This song makes me cry but in a good way. memories are good cuz they make sure you don't forget. Thanks funkylizard... I am actually trying to avoid this song since I no longer have a mom or dad with me anymore and this will be my first xmas entirely alone with no plans except me and my dog :( Heard it while shopping at the mall earlier tonite and had to walk away before it got too emotional... despite that, and the low quality video, this sure is a great tune. one of the last Christmas gifts I bought my Mom before she died was a pair of Christmas shoes. This song makes me cry but in a good way. memories are good cuz they make sure you don't forget. I won't dignify those who hate or dislike the song with rude remarks. they are entitled to their opinion. i just hope when they lose someone they love that folks are not as mean to them as they have been with their comments here.

I agree. My mom died five years ago, 17 days before Christmas. I had bought her a wallet, but I can still relate to this song, though I never got to give her the wallet.
