Do you know that our government considered in 1997 to form a cooperation with France to build a second ship of the Charles de Gaulle class for the German navy??? It shal have the name Konrad Adenauer. But they stop it, becuase of the high purchase and dependent costs and becuase a carrier would not fit into the German military plan.

You must consider that our ports are not so big. The Jade Bay (Wilhelmshaven) has a deep of 15 to 18 metres. So the Charles de Gaulle-Class or even the Queen Elizabeth-Class would be the maximum size. A Nimitz-Class carrier would be to big ;)

After the specs i can find the Queen Elizabeth class has a size from 284 x 73 metres and a draught from 11 metres. The Charles de Gaulle has 261,5 x 67 x 11,9 metres. I know a lot carriers who are bigger. The Russian Admiral Kuznetsov class, the American Enterprise-, Nimitz- and Gerald R. Ford class ...

And we have a strong military. The problem is, that it is aligned for a defensive roll. Ok, Bundeswehr even means Federal Defence in English ;)

@couteau86 The Russian ship is old outdated and will be retired within the next decade so I'll not count that:)And I forgot about the GR Ford Class. The Enterprise is being decommissioned as soon as the first GR Ford Class comes in though. So QE Class will be 3rd- after Nimitz and R Ford Class. QE Class is going to weigh between 65-70,000 tonnes the CdG is 42,000 max. The German Armed Forces would not be able to conduct missions comparable with the US, UK or France, that was my point.

@MrXray2011 All European Armed Forces should be increasing in size to combat the threat from the East and the Middle East at the moment they're getting more and more powerful and before long even the US wouldn't be able to take them on so we should be prepared the EU is, after all, much richer than the USA so why can't we put that money to good use and stop throwing money at Greece, Italy, Spain and Ireland. Let them sort their own problems out (without being in the EU).

Yeah, but the point is, that both carriers have the place for 40 air vehicles. And the problem i see at the Queen Elizabeth class is the STOVL-design, who we must buy STOVL-planes like the Harrier or even the F-35. I prever the CTOL-design, where we must just modify our Eurofighters ;) and even the conventional engine koncept of the Queen ELizabeth class restrict it a little bit ...

@couteau86 HMS Queen Elizabeth will be completed as STOVL and will train the crew ready for when HMS Prince of Wales comes into service- which will coincide with the delivery of the 150 F-35C's for the RAF and FAA (we may get more as well as more Euro Fighters.) HMS Prince of Wales will be CATOBAR and will take over from HMS QE by 2020, when HMS QE will be refitted to CATOBAR configuration. By 2024 the Royal Navy will have two QE Class both built as CATOBAR, with 40 F35's+ each.

There she is... the world's most unreliable ACC. No offence France but you should decommission the Charles De Gaulle and get a new one... it breaks all of the time. Still the French Navy is the third best in the world, third only to the Royal Navy and the United States Navy.

Keep laws to the governments but work together in military activites. I do not hate the French, Germans etc I just want my country to be able to make our own laws and for the EU to stay out of interior activites in the UK. We are not failing and the US is not our only ally. The Common Wealth of Nations has 1/3 of the worlds population..

well, this is where the fork in the road is...

it seems like britain wants a purely military alliance. but france, germany and others want the eventual goal of unifying europe. This will not happen over night, and i beleive distinct cultural and political barriers will always remain between the nations...but increased economic cooperation will gradually make a more unified homogenous europe.

This is necessary if europe is to remain a world power in the future, against russia+china

Little tip for you, your royal family, the House of Windsor, the real name of this familiy is House of Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha and it is a German family. They renamed hereself in 1917 into Windsor, becuase of ther kinship to the House of Hohenzollern who provide the German emperor (Wilhelm II. was the cousin of Georg V.)
