That night marks such a point in history. I'll always remember how I felt like a weight had been lifted. I've never been so happy and relieved. It literally made me cry.
The gatherings were not organized, nor under anyone's control. All the streets were blocked by revelers, people walking in the street. After 2am, some put their cars in the intersections & started blaring stereos loudly. It went from festive to annoying for 1000s of residents who live nearby. The 7-Eleven workers had to close for safety. So, no bathrooms, no refreshments & a lot of excited, young, raucous people.... 3-1/2 hours was just fine: Less is more! Any longer could have turned out badly.
@dweester I remember people were pouring into the streets in silver spring. I drove down from Odenton, Called up my friend in Bel-Air, and we both went and partied. Quite a fun time we had despite the fact that I had to work the next day.
Thanks for giving me (an American in London) a feel for what that extraordinary night must have been like in DC! [tears of joy -and a bit of homesickness- as I type this]
I absolutely love this. My brother was somewhere in the midst of all that celebrating and said that he had never seen anything like it in his life. What a great moment for our country!
I was on U street at Solly's when Obama won. It was awesome. My friends laughed, cried, and rejoiced. I remember seeing the guy waving the American flag on the corner (shown briefly in this video) and the fireworks next to the Mayor's headquarters along with the drum circle there. Thanks for this post.
Whether people know it or not, they became part of history on Nov.4. Martin Luther King Jnr must have been looking down with the biggest smile ever because he had a dream and now America has fulfilled it, what excitement, what hope, what dreams.
Thank you for making this video, and posting it. I live in Canada, but I had been rooting for Obama the entire time- and when I found out that he was elected- it brought tears of happiness to my eyes! Even here in Canada, there were celebrations. People throwing parties, talking to their friends for hours about it, dancing, crying. We're all so happy! Look at the harmony in the streets. This is truly beautiful, and something that hasn't been seen in quite some time. Thank you Obama, God bless!
thank you for sharing this. there aren't really words to capture how tremendous this moment was. and the shots of the capitol make it all the more powerful. thank you, thank you, thank you. god bless president-elect obama and all of us who celebrate this achievement.
Everyone should of stormed the white house to finish the night off, nothing violent just a good old fashion storming of a building and out the back door. Whats the secret service going to do shoot ten thousand people.
And while they're doing that, the should of carried Bush out the back door in a non violent fashion, dumped him in a crate and shipped him to antarctica..making sure there's a few non violent but very hungry polar bears at his shipping destination.
Thanx for posting this video; this is truly a historical moment!!! I used to live in DC and seeing this is absolutely amazing. I wish I was in DC to take part in the celebrations.
one of the best videos of this historic night on U St. thanks! great summary of the unfolding events. loved the concluding shot of the U.S. Capitol and the peacful calming of the streets. great job!
Im from DC urrea, I hate that I missed all this but trust I will be there 01-20-2009!! Good video, btw...and yes ended peacefully that was the key word!
One of the best video's of the night, I too was on U St and it was just an AMAZING experience!! The spirit, the energy that was in the air and in everyone. And U St just came to a halt at one point, no cars could move there were just SO many people around! YES WE DID!!
It was awesome. I must have hi-fived and hugged 100 strangers. The whole city was nuts. On my bike-ride home, I passed through U Street. It was even crazier than the White House. People were sitting on cars and dancing in the street.
What an incredible night in D.C.!!!!!! Got home at 3:40 a.m. and the streets were still jammed. LOVED it. Loved my fellow americans, loved the energy. Now, let's change things for real!

Would McCain have gotten the same kind of reception/reaction if he had won? NOPE!
Go Obama!
I love these "in the street" random videos. They truly capture the MAJORITY of my fellow Americans' feelings on that historic, game-changing night.

I dont understand why the police cleared the streets and why they are all over everything that happens constantly, it wasn't allways like that.
