This, obviously isn't the original, studio version. Because it's different in so many ways. It's him playing it. The reason why the audio cuts out at :13, is because they turn on the condenser mics, and allow him to play to the XM world. How dumb do you have to be?
Wow what the fuck guys? THIS IS THE STUDIO VERSION.. You can hear the audio cut out at :13 and the studio version kick in.. Whoever uploaded this video must of dubbed it because Dallas was obviously REALLY singing for the satellite shit.
thats cuz at the beginning they use the camera mic to record the voice then when dallas starts playing the audio is switched over to the condenser mic for vocals and a mix of ribbon mic+guitar pickup plug-in for the acoustic guitar so the quality is a lot better
this IS live. the footage is indeed a small crappy quality camera, however, as this performance was for radio, they have cut the audio used from the mic in front of his face n put it over what would be substandard audio from the shitty cam. further proof is going to see him live. i have twice, one of which he was 2 feet in front of me. he sounds like he does HERE. also the phrasing on the vox is different in some parts to how it is on the cd, and track lacks the percussion of recorded version.
i love this song, but just like mickaw, its hard to tell its live :S after he stops talking in the begining the transition sounds like its just goin to the normal song other than live :S
this IS a live recording, you can tell just by watching the slight chord and vocal differences. its just been mixed and mastered (thats why theres a little bit of silence between talking and playing) x
to all the ppl who think this isn't live, type in "Dallas Green of City and Colour performing Waiting" Pretty sure it's a recording that's jus as good as this one!!!! Dallas would never overdub any instruments or voices...He doesn't need to
I love how people cannot believe that a guy can actually sing and play in tune and in time...It's sad what we've come to expect out of our modern day musicians..
Hmm guys you can tell its not live just before he starts playing :/ im not like being bias or anything cus hes the best live performer, this just isnt live haha
Using the microphones in front of him rather than the microphone of the camera that is shooting the video. The issue is that the sync is a fragment of a second off and we wanted to capture what he said in the studio prior to the recording so we spliced the two audio segements at the beginning together.
Pretty simple.
It is a singer and a guitar. Not rocket science. Nothing to "fake" here.
Of course this is live. He goes briefly goes flat on "hope for a better place."
He has two diaphram condenser mics recording him and some post-production so, of course, it's going to sound good.
To his credit, his timing and pitch are remarkable. Not many artists today can do this.
The point about the metronome is well taken. There is no way he could play perfectly on time without listeing to a metronome or pre-recorded song on the headphones.
you're missing the point. fall out boy and panic rely on the studio editing to help them sing, while dallas doesn't. and that's called being a musician. the other way is called being a product.
Simply: It's live, because it's not a multi tracked recording.
Any track, no matter where it's recorded, if all the instruments/voices performing are outputted at once, it's a live recording.
'Live' doesn't refer only to performing to an audience.
Sound quality's so good because it's clearly been treated. A little reverb on the vocals, which he always has, even at gigs, and his guitar is direct input, the guitar mic has hardly been used.
Do you really think he has time to 'fake' radio shows?
haha good point...and he doesnt need to fake them...he has some great quality input with his guitar directly lined-in and some good quality mics with his trademark reverb...he knows how to make himself sound good without "faking it" haha
Also...for those of little faith, notice that he's not wearing headphones, so if he "faked" this, he'd have to be a human metronome because he's not listening to a click track.
It's definitely live. Any guitar player can watch his hands and know that this is live, even with the video sync problems. What you hear before the song starts is just the room mic. It's just a 2 channel recording straight from the board...there's some verb on the vocal, but the guitar is straight from the output jack. Listen to some other live recordings of him - as long as it's just him and an acoustic guitar, he's pretty much perfect.
No its just you .. This is 100% live it sounds too good because it has been mixed in the studio but no overdubbs no autotune dallas is just this freaking good!!!
I know he's good...but listen while he strums his guitar the first time and is talking. I think the radio station just played the actual song over his performance. His lips are a little off sync from the audio too.
the reason that the guitar sounds different the first time he strums is because they are using the camera to capture the sound, then switch to XM's equipment...
and as for the lips that because the editor of this video clip didn't match of the video with XM's track perfectly... this is the real performance of this song.
actually it is live, the mic he is using is a neumann u87 with perhaps a compressor on it so that is why it sounds so good. Probably tracked into Pro Tools and not much mixing needed my friend, but nice try
that's not a u87. the mic in the room is transformerless (hence the short stock in comparison to the size of the capsule), which the 87 is not...
it's an AKG something or other, I'm pretty positive.
and while I'm on a seemingly ridiculous e-rage, since when does tracking something into protools as opposed to another sequencer affect the amount of mixing required?!
JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN SPELL COMPRESSOR DOES NOT MEAN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT ktxhbai
Sorry jackass, Protools first off isnt a "Sequencer" program, it's a recording software. The reason it probably didn't need much mixing is the fact that broadcasting uses a ton of COMPRESSION (wow i can spell) therefore it tracked properly, no MIXING REQUIRED! and for someone who wants to throw around tech terms you can't even realize what mic company it is. It IS NEUMANN and the model is a M147 which is transformerless.
you realize a sequencer is a program that *sequences* audio and midi transparently, right?
durrr.
haha. guy... compression has nothing to do with mixing. that's post-prod work. also, there's not a lot of noticeable compression.. very soft if any.
and by the way, I'm very sorry that I can suggest the identity of a design of microphone by looking at it and comparing it to what I know of already, instead of claiming it is another one right off the bat. see: use of "I'm pretty positive".
Actually bud, you don't sequence audio, you sequence midi, in a SEQUENCER window not a mix or edit window which was used here. And compression has EVERYTHING to do with mixing you dumb fuck. And Most of any instrument and vocal tracks are recorded with signal processors and with RTAS plugins such as compressors, you are adjusting gain levels before the track is even recorded-hence MIXING. Don't worry though, I'm sure there are others out there just as dumb as you. Cheer Up
way to take it ott. there really is no need to get that angry about a guy that is challenging your statement. has your mummy only just unwraped you from that cotton wool you were in for so long and you havent yet figured out how to react in a calm and collected state...
haahah, what kinna idiot would doubt the talent of Dallas Green. He makes his music sound great, this just proves that his Live skills are awesome. :)
hahah your a desmond hay. if you did see him live you must've have been listening. it sounds just like him, hes amazing. whats the point of trying to say its not him anyway, do you get some sort of self satisfaction? felt like you've become a music critic or something and actually done something with your life?
its not the album track played over it, and its not live from when the video is being recorded. its that recording in that room after its been mixed and produced. now shut the fuck up
What is laid upon it is the final mix from the LiVE@theVerge session he did with us. See the microphone in front of his face? The one in front of the guitar? What you are hearing is coming from what was recorded through those rather than the shitty mic on the video camera.
The reason there is silence is because the talking he did prior to starting to play was not kept in the recording for the main mics, but we wanted to have it on this video.

Graceng13 3 years ago
the reason that the guitar sounds different the first time he strums is because they are using the camera to capture the sound, then switch to XM's equipment...
and as for the lips that because the editor of this video clip didn't match of the video with XM's track perfectly... this is the real performance of this song.

Simple as that.

Go ahead and find comfort in your incorrect presumption.
Your insistence doesn't change the truth one little bit :)

I don't care if it's live or the cd version, it's still amazing.
OhSoShocking 3 years ago
It is not the CD version.
It is the version that was recorded from that microphone in front of him rather than the microphone that was on the camera itself.
