thats cuz at the beginning they use the camera mic to record the voice then when dallas starts playing the audio is switched over to the condenser mic for vocals and a mix of ribbon mic+guitar pickup plug-in for the acoustic guitar so the quality is a lot better

this IS live. the footage is indeed a small crappy quality camera, however, as this performance was for radio, they have cut the audio used from the mic in front of his face n put it over what would be substandard audio from the shitty cam. further proof is going to see him live. i have twice, one of which he was 2 feet in front of me. he sounds like he does HERE. also the phrasing on the vox is different in some parts to how it is on the cd, and track lacks the percussion of recorded version.

It is the live recording.

Using the microphones in front of him rather than the microphone of the camera that is shooting the video. The issue is that the sync is a fragment of a second off and we wanted to capture what he said in the studio prior to the recording so we spliced the two audio segements at the beginning together.

Pretty simple.

It is a singer and a guitar. Not rocket science. Nothing to "fake" here.

He has two diaphram condenser mics recording him and some post-production so, of course, it's going to sound good.

To his credit, his timing and pitch are remarkable. Not many artists today can do this.

The point about the metronome is well taken. There is no way he could play perfectly on time without listeing to a metronome or pre-recorded song on the headphones.

Simply stated, he's amazing.

Any track, no matter where it's recorded, if all the instruments/voices performing are outputted at once, it's a live recording.

'Live' doesn't refer only to performing to an audience.

Sound quality's so good because it's clearly been treated. A little reverb on the vocals, which he always has, even at gigs, and his guitar is direct input, the guitar mic has hardly been used.

It's definitely live. Any guitar player can watch his hands and know that this is live, even with the video sync problems. What you hear before the song starts is just the room mic. It's just a 2 channel recording straight from the board...there's some verb on the vocal, but the guitar is straight from the output jack. Listen to some other live recordings of him - as long as it's just him and an acoustic guitar, he's pretty much perfect.

Sorry jackass, Protools first off isnt a "Sequencer" program, it's a recording software. The reason it probably didn't need much mixing is the fact that broadcasting uses a ton of COMPRESSION (wow i can spell) therefore it tracked properly, no MIXING REQUIRED! and for someone who wants to throw around tech terms you can't even realize what mic company it is. It IS NEUMANN and the model is a M147 which is transformerless.

Actually bud, you don't sequence audio, you sequence midi, in a SEQUENCER window not a mix or edit window which was used here. And compression has EVERYTHING to do with mixing you dumb fuck. And Most of any instrument and vocal tracks are recorded with signal processors and with RTAS plugins such as compressors, you are adjusting gain levels before the track is even recorded-hence MIXING. Don't worry though, I'm sure there are others out there just as dumb as you. Cheer Up

What is laid upon it is the final mix from the LiVE@theVerge session he did with us. See the microphone in front of his face? The one in front of the guitar? What you are hearing is coming from what was recorded through those rather than the shitty mic on the video camera.

The reason there is silence is because the talking he did prior to starting to play was not kept in the recording for the main mics, but we wanted to have it on this video.
