  • sony HWS-BTA2W might be an alternative as the a210's are starting to become less available.

  • @narejongen Thanks, I am not keeping up with alternatives or replacements.

  • Guess this should work the other way ? i.e. to connect a rig to a pc and wirelessly using a laptops bluetooth to get sound in and out

  • Randy I did your bluetooth project a few years ago, got it working ok and set it aside.

I recently had the need for hearing aids and they have bluetooth. I thought aha the Jabra A210. So I dug it out and found it won't take a charge now. Now they are out of production and a few available at much higher prices . From what I have read the batteies don't last very long.

I was wondering if you or your buddies had found a substitute.

  • @rwcan42 HI, you might be able to kludge another battery to power this. Check at k7sfn.com to see if Frank has any ideas. Randy

  • Hey Randy, i was just wondering , i have the yaesu bh-1a will the ptt on this bluetooth head set wor or will i still have to put it into vox position,, ps...i am using the jabra a120 so far.....what are you thought......thank you for your time and for all the videos as i dont have an elmer here i kinda watch your vids for tips ,,, so thx so much ac2ae 73's hope to here you out there....

  • @jbisogno2000 I don't know anything about the yaesu headset. Don't know if the PTT would work with the Jabra.

  • As an audiophile, I can totally tell the difference in audio quality between the two. But regardless, you did a great job and it's a brilliant idea. Most people won't notice the difference, I just have OCD.

  • Hi Randy ...

Unable to get the Jabra A-210 ... is there anything else that will replace this ... Thanks Mike ... UK ... M0csi // G7wfe

  • @M0csi I'm not sure. You may have to hunt around. Look through the comments on here, someone may have found something else.

  • try it with the JOWBONE Bluetooth headset you will love it

  • Hi Randy.

I would like to build this but can't get the Jabra a-210 any more.. Any answers.. Paul Vk2ktt

  • Hello, I would to like to connect my ft-857D to my car's bluetooth hadsfree. Could it work?

  • Randy....what can't you do? 73 NYS

  • I have gone out and purchased a few of these on the advice of this video!

But the charger was missing. Does anyone know what the pinouts are? It looks like a small USB connector....is it?

    thanks

  • Where did K7AGE go? I have watched every video that he made and loved all of them.I sure hope he hasn't gotten tired of us.

  • My Dell laptop had a hidden hatch with cable for BT, bought a used card for it, got one of the VXI headsets and while I work bench work on laptops and desktops and printers I can still converse with people in a Skype group - will soon be testing for ham, might be time to find the Jabra interface and have a second use for my VXI. Always the best videos Randy.

  • Seems like the a210 as been discontinued from jabra.... :(

  • i swear I saw similar unit for sale somewhere just a little while ago, surely there are different units out there

  • btw, works great on my TS2000! Tnx!

  • @JackSoffalot hi, i have one ts2000, i like to try this, i have all, only i need to connect but i have a question, the ground of the mic is the same of the audio out, because the ts2000 dont have head phone out in the mic connector. thanks

  • Has anyone gotten the jabra a210 to work with the ft817 and 817?

  • Sweet... think I'll try that!

  • Great job Randy? I think I will try this in my shack. Do you have any solutions for "around the house" headsets? I think this would work fine in the shack, but I would love for the range to extend to downstairs through a few walls.

  • Thanks for the information do you know if these will work through walls only 5 to 6 metres as i use the ft8900r on crossband frowned upon in the uk! cheers Nick

  • When I get two walls and 4 meters away it starts to get noisy. Randy

  • Great info. Thanks man.

  • Much better audio

  • With the new wireless telephone law in California as of July 1, 2008. This makes the perfect solution for mobil stations, thank you very much for the idea.

  • the jabra is only be sold and shippe to US. *sigh*

we live in a global village. It remains a mystery to me why so many businesmann lack phantasy outside their domestic borders. Whats wrong with my euros?

    good video though.

  • The A-210 is available on eBay. Some sellers will ship worldwide. Just saw one with Buy it Now price of 11.70 plus shipping.

  • Send from brazil?

  • I have found if I reduce the af on the radio to low level and increase the volume on the headset I have an acceptable level of "noise".

Got and excellant audio report on my first contact. It would be nice if the mike boom was about an inch longer, but other than that it seems to work ok. Thanks for introducing me to this new bluetooth use.

  • Sounds like you got it all working. Randy

  • Matched the Jabra a210 with the blueparrot b250. First time I paired them and used with my Icom 756 pro, it worked well. When I tried it next time, vox and recieve worked, but with much static in the headphone. Any ideas?

  • Can't find a vxi b150. Will the vxi b250 work as well?

  • Yes, that seems to be the replacement. Randy

  • YAESU FT-857. K7AGE take about connecting up this radio, but just what/where on the raio do you do this with?

I just see data in and PTT.

  • Nice! I want to try that out with my Icom IC-V8 it has the 2.5mm for mic and the 3.5mm for headphone, my question is that does the jabra also has a plug for for the audio? Last question, to talk i would just use the ptt on the radio correct? Thanks and 73s! ke5rrh

  • hi Randy. I've testet my cardon bluetooth headset with the jabra a210 and found out a nasty behavier.

the Jabra goes sleeping after a while with no audio input from the radio and does only come back to live when it receives a signal on the audio input from the radio otput connector. the input (microphone) is ignored at all when the jabra has gone to sleep. surely no problem on SSB (due to a constant signal level) but working on FM (squelched) comes up with the problem. 73 Heinz DL9NDG

  • I think you can press a button to wake it up again. This is probably a power saving mode. Randy

  • Hi Randy. Just made up a lead for the TS 2000 and works a treat. Next is one for the FT-857 in the mobile.

    Regards, Paul G1LOV

  • simplemente exelente !!! gracias amigo

  • Excellent help, esp. for those who have a need to learn more about electronics and interfacing.

  • If you're using different cables for your transceivers, you could insert an attenuator or simply a resistor as a voltage divider to adjust the audio level. Then you wouldn't always have to change the mike gain when switching between the bluetooth interface and the regular microphone.

  • Good idea, Randy

  • Great idea! verry intresting. i must test this idea!

  • Thanks for the excellent idea, Randy! I had a Cardo BT-II sitting on the shelf. I just put it together and use the interface with my RIGblaster Pro. Transmit audio was a bit low at first but I enabled the GAIN function on the Cardo and now there's plenty of gain. I'm using the interface through a RIGblaster Pro into an Icom Pro3.

  • Great post Randy. My wife (N7HMQ) and I ride quad 4 wheelers. I have HT's hooked up for comm. running an umbilical between the helmet and radio harness w/ext ant. The radio is in a fender pk running off the ATV's batt system. I have a sealed ptt mounted on the left grip. This has worked quite well for us. After reading your article, I bought a Cardo Helmet Headset. It has great noise canceling properties. I also purchased the Cardo BTA-II for the radio side. It works GREAT! de KA7RZR

  • Randy,

How do you think this would work for HF mobiling ?

    Thanks for the video.

    Scott

    Phx

  • It would probably work OK. One of my friends has this on his IC-7000 mobile. Randy

  • What a great idea...what kind of distance do you have with the blue tooth...would I be able to go from room to room with the headset.

  • It is line of sight. Doesn't seem to go through wall too good. Randy

  • Walls seem to really reduce the signal. I can get about 20-25 feet away, through one wall and the audio gets noisy. Randy

  • I now have a schematic of the interface box. Send me a real email and I can send it to you. Randy

  • Thanks Randy,

for another great video. Thought about it for contesting. Give you a chance to grab a cup of tea, but the battery life is the killer.

  • Hey Randy do you have any videos in the future about PSKMAIL ?. I've been researching into it and so far haven't been able to find a source of concrete information on how to get it going. I have LInux up and running but the setup instructions are really cryptic. Sorry if the comment is off topic. Just thought to ask you the question directly here instead.

  • I have read a bit about PSK Mail. It seems like a neat system. I don't know if I'll learn enough about it, get on the air in order to make a video. Randy

  • Yeah, with everything you have already clarified with regard to PSK31, PSKMAIL is just an extension of it, running PSK125, I think. So it's just a matter of setting up the software etc. If I get it working Ill be glad ton share the details with you. Luis

  • Randy : Great Job with the Video.

Personally I am put off by the idea of having to change and recharge the batteries all the time.

I would really like to see the headset with a cradle that recharged.

Would also like to see such a headset with a USB dongle that one could use with a PC and have the thing get its power from the USB rather than battery.

Not sure how one could eliminate the Battery for the Radio Bluetooth interface without having to run a power lead.

  • There is a USB charging cable for the Jabra A-210 available on Ebay. I'm going to try this and I'll probably get a USB cable for the A-210 so I won't need to worry about keeping it charged. I'll also get a second headset so that won't be a problem either I hope.

  • Another great idea Randy. Keep up the good work.

  • Well presented, Randy, thanks. I did catch ya say RG8 instead of RJ45, but that's just my proofreading brain at work. I see in later notes where you found out how the noise cancelling mic worked. Older, passive technique was to merely have openings on both sides of the microphone diaphram (sp?) so that ambient noise hit both sides and mechanically cancelled and your voice predominantly hit only one side and went through. Finally, a ham of your experience knows it 73, not 73's ;-)

  • I just discovered that the mic in the head is really a dual mic element. One side is labeled TALK. The idea is that noise is picked up by both elements and subtracted. Voice is mainly only on one mic element, so it comes through even after the two signals are subtracted. Therefore your voice is stronger than the noise around you. You see, you learn something new everyday! Randy

  • Can you just use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter for HT compatibility with the Jabra A-210?

    Thanks,

    Bronson - KD8FJI

  • My guess, probably not. Most radios have PTT along with the other signals as a DC path to ground. Look in your HT manual to see what the wiring is like. If you radio has a VOX, you may be able to make up an adapter to work. Randy

  • Who is the control operator on your bluetooth? This far too advanced for some on QRZ & eHam, who simply think everything is a link. This also shows how FCC Part 97 has not been rewritten to reflect technology changes in the last 25 years, since AX.25 packet radio was addressed...

Good job though. I am going to try it

    73 de Rafman K4RAF

  • From repeater dealings back in the 70s, I learned don't ask the FCC for permission, otherwise they will have to make a decision! Just do it! Randy

  • Randy, I could not agree more. Momma taught me it is always easier to beg forgiveness than ask for permission... Excellent video. What video editor was used for this?

    Rafman

  • I shoot using a $300 Panasonic DV camera, audio mixer with mic and radio back into the camera, and Sony Vegas (not the Pro) for editing. Randy

  • Excellent! Understandable and useful. Good radio voice, Randy!

    73 de Bob, N2EDF

  • Another great video, Randy. Have you considered a BlueTooth (or more robust possibly WIFI?) wireless connection to replace the wired connection of rig to removeable control head? Mike

  • Yaesu has the new FTM-10R/E radio with bluetooth for audio. Maybe we will see more BT from Icom, Kenwood, & Yaeus in the future. Randy

  • Randy,

You have done it again, Amazing video!

Can this be use as a wireless interface to your computer for digital modes? I am not sure how the PC will work when paired to the Jabra. Just a thought!

    TC,

  • TC, I have no idea. Give it try! Randy

  • Hi Randy

Nice to see a new video and we was just saying last week it would be nice to have a Bluetooth head set so it was nice to get this information Randy Thanks

    Steve M1ERS

  • Another great video. We have found that once you have turned on the vxi and paired it with the head set, you should not have to pair it again. So after charging and it is turned on, with audio or some noise from receiver, it should come to life, if it does not, then push the top button on head set and that should do it. If for some reason the vxi gets stuck in pairing mode, you will have to let the battery die by leaving it on for several days, then start from scratch for pairing.

    kr6g

  • Thanks Alex for the suggestions in pairing and operation. Alex is one of the 75 meter gang that is using this combination. Randy

  • Thanks Randy great video have a Jabra A-210 on the way, can't wait to play. 73, Doug

  • Very helpful information. Last night I put up a a homemade antenna made by my dad kb9qxe and I have never heard so many signals on 80 meters I almost made a contact with j5c but we could barely hear him so I decided to just play around.

  • Thanks RANDY! Very helpful information! 73 Jer

  • Randy,

Many thanx. Great gik idea. But in your demonstration was some noise on backgrount. Can you able to cancel it? Also I guess a little bit overloading signal there. Anyway it working fine.

    With best regards

    Andrey HB9/KL1A (RW3AH)

  • The TS-2000 was going into my dummy load, and my FT-817 was sitting on top of it. The signal into the FT-817 was not very strong! I had probably a bit much mic gain with the BT so it sounded a bit overloaded or compressed. Tweaking would of made it a bit better. Randy
