sounds like a diesel. you're best putting the original air filter on and it will increase performance inside the original housing. Tat thing you have is not a filter so you are allowing huge bits of dirt in to your engine and causing premature wear. You're also sucking in hot air. please learn about engines and filtration.

can you swap the 2.0ztec shortblock on it?

I'm not sure about the 2.0 zetec, however pumaspeed to a 2.0 duratec conversion for 4k. Tend to use mondeo engines...
