You guys are full of crap B & W speakers sound great even with a cheap power amp as long as you have enough power to drive them...smh...stop reading those dumb magazines...
don't agree that Sony receivers sound bad - ive got a TA-DA9000ES S-Master 7.1 channel and it sounds better than my Audio Innovations Series 500 Valve - and it gives out 200 w per channel
No offence, but I hope you are not driving the 801's with a Sony receiver? If so, you owe it to yourself to try a real amp. Even a used Rotel RB-1080 (about $650 on the used market) amp will sound much better than Sony. I use to sell ES and B&W. Always thought the Sony receivers were one of the worst sounding out of the bunch I sold. And the most confusing, hard to use also. Just my two cents.
@musmann No I don't drive the B&W's with the Sony receiver in this vid. I drove them with Sony TA-N80ES Power Amp. Nowadays I drive them with Luxman M-05 power amp. Btw, I have owned RB-1080 before that Sony. Sony beat it up very easily.
I have the Matrix 800's. They were designed to fill larger rooms and for people who needed more output (volume) than the 801's could deliver. A audio technician friend of mine has a pair of old 801's he heavily modified, speakers are old but of of the best system I have ever listened too.
@musmann you've been reading too many hifi mags - Sony's logic is to produce a product that is way better than its price and recover the cost thru mass production. The first portable CD player D50 initially cost twice as much to make than it was sold for and took two years to break even. The non mass market brands can offer better individual products but they can't offer better value.
@gorton8andy No offence but I have been selling high end audio for 12yrs and it's been a hobby since I was a kid. I use to sell Sony ES, it's garbage. It was garbage when I sold it and it still is. Even when compared to many other mass marked receivers/electronics it's junk. I have had far too much experience with this stuff to be fooled by Sony. Not that they haven't made some really nice stuff in the past but their receivers are not very good at all.
@musmann I TOTALY AGREE WITH YOU ! I have B&W 805S seria, but the Sony amps are NOT HIGH CURRENT amps ! Every B&W speakers NEED a HIGH CURRENT amp, to sound right ! Even B&W SAYS THIS on their web page ! That is why I use the Harman/Kardon Citation 22 power amp. Frequency range :0,5 Hz - 240-thousand hertz ! ! That is SOMETHING ! The Hk Citation 22, and the Citation 5,1 (4 chanel-stereo, no decoder in it ) 7,1 = 4 ch stereo are high current amps. The Rotels are also High currents.
@yputup The width of the sound stage and imaging quality has nothing to do with the distance between the loudspeakers and the wall. That would like only effect the low end response of the speakers, often creating a rather boomy or unclear bass response.
And, I like Sony ES. Great stuff, great value, and a great warranty (5 years in case anyone is curious). They are a step above regular Sony for sure.
I've got a rig with ES stuff, too. Not as nice as yours, though.
STR-DA4ES, CDP-X229ES, TC-K707ES, PS-X600, DVP-S7700, SVO-160, SLV-575UC, SL-2710, SCPH-1001, and SCPH-30001 R, and KV-27S66 are all the Sony stuff I have in my setup.
Yes you were very right with the equipment i see. Yea CD is XA50ES, DVP-NS9100ES is the dvd, and pre amp with digital inputs is TA-E77ESD and poweramp is TA-N80ES and yes, the cineamp is 7100ES. :)
@DjKnight2 what other sub has a 1000w amp? I love mine - it adds a lot and takes nothing away. Another example of an incredible Sony audio product totally ignored because hasn't got the right name on it.
But my opinion insn't coloured by what products I have to sell and what profit or mark up I would like, it is simply my own experience.

@DjKnight2 sorry, nowadays I drive B&W Matrix 800 in Rosewood with the M-05.

I'm kinda surprised the Sony beat up the Rotel. the Luxman is a good amp. How does it compare to the Sony?

I've never seen the B&W 801 are set that close to the wall. You have no idea of sound stage and imaging. You spoil those 801.

Yes, I know that very clearly. This situation has changed long time ago to the better.
