  • nice

  • At 0:55 I could almost feel the waves of the beach listening to a good Reggae song!.. Wow.. Awsome.

  • thats not reggae my friend listen to Sly Dumbar

  • Your pedal is vertical to the bass drum?

  • Thank you for taking the time to post this.

  • La clave del Reggae, está en: "menos es mas" !!

  • bass drum and rim make flams sometimes, which really ruins the groove..

  • regular.. pero falta ser preciso.!!!

  • If you knew anything about reggae drumming, you wouldn't be playing with carbon fibre sticks.

  • Some good stuff, but your bass sounds like balls.

  • yer kick pedal is off center

  • at the begining it sound like roxane from the policwe

  • Valeu! gostei muito mesmo, bem gostoso de ouvir, um som bem tirado.

  • I think every drummer should atleast try to get the hang of this kind of music, I like to play a lot of kinds ^^

  • it's not that bad. Maybe you paly this stuff all the time, but this is good enough if your main thing isn't reggae, but just want to be able to play some in case you needed it in some song.

  • great job !!!

  • ucok <3 tika

  • Reggae is not his first love,

  • I think I can do it

  • kinda reminds me of Steward Copeland from the police.

  • lol no one knows how to play reggae on youtube except some gorilla dude

  • Anyone else see that his beater is hitting the bass drum on an angle?

  • there are no steps between the 2nd and the 3rd video?!???!?

  • your bass drums sounds like my 8 inch tom... Oh and why don't you do double time with your right hand on the hats and incorporate some triplets with your left hand on the hats once in a while along with opening and closing hi-hat variation?

  • got the first two but the last one was so hard ;@

  • If you like reggae, reggaeton, or dancehall music, "reggaelinx website"is an awesome site for you.

  • men el one drup borde de caja y el bombo tienen q sonar juntos ,, a ti te suenen por separados , repasa eso y tendras reggae puro

    saludos ,big up !!

  • Have you seen "reggaelinx website"it is like YouTube for reggae videos. It is so much easier to find and play reggae videos.

  • snare rolls kinda suck not enough rim shot

  • the drop isn't tight enough !

    Sorry

  • Love it!

  • sounds like the beginning of "Don't Stand So Close To Me"

  • wait a minute... you are the same one who takes classes of "how to be an idiot"!

fuck yeah i remember you man!!

  • If anyone really want to learn Reggae drumming, Check out people like Sly Dunbar, Carlton"Santa" Davis, Carlton Barrett, Leroy"Horsemouth" Wallace, Dezi (from the group Chalice), Willie ( Formally from Third World), and Grizzy (From Steel Pulse). These are just a few Reggae drummers that are still out there rocking.

  • man te falta feeling

  • @Edier37Roots ya seeeeee.

  • very nice and for some reason you remind me of steve gadd! (maybe the drumsticks!! hahahaha)

  • im a punk drummer and this is too hard for me ):

  • @toriplatypus Too Hard? I can't believe it!!!

  • @KingMellow11 i mean, i can do it, then i lose it. and i do it faster...

  • @KingMellow11

Its true because its slow you need a really great rythm.

My drummer plays mettalica top speed, and hes still struggling with this xD

its sounds funny but this is really hard.

  • @ionnieboy thats right

  • @toriplatypus you should learn third wave ska

  • @SubliminalxGh0st you should show me :l

  • @SubliminalxGh0st Third Wave ska is so basic and lame percussively ..with the exception of Streetlight.

  • @toriplatypus haha so true! :D

  • @toriplatypus well yeah....you're a punk drummer. lol jk

  • @WeHaveFreshCookies i mean... i play punk music... but im not punk

  • @toriplatypus no, i was implying that punk music is generally easy compared to other styles of drumming. but I am familiar with the really good punk drummers, so is was sort of a sarcastic quip :) haha

  • @WeHaveFreshCookies yeah its really easy...

i have 6 moths playing and some people ells me im not

and im not, actually im really bad (:

and this drumming style makes me fell i know 1% of the music

so.... yeah i need time (:

and the -lol jk- on your comment totally pointed out the sarcasm (:

  • @toriplatypus ah ok. i guess punk is a good starter for the first 6 months of drumming. but in a little while, you should really start looking to other styles. :)

  • @WeHaveFreshCookies yeah... like this one... and ska, funk and a little bit of grohl's

  • @toriplatypus lol thats why you should learn how to play all types of drum styles even though you only play rock...the more you know about drums the better drummer you'll be

  • @toriplatypus I'm a metal drummer, this is quite easy to me =p

  • @metalmaster126 yeah... metal is the hardest

  • @toriplatypus nah it ain't, Jazz is =p I mix the two together =p

  • @metalmaster126 i have been playing for 6 moths... i need time (:

  • @toriplatypus so have I xD, I've been playing for that long at 3 hours a day... I'm grade 8 standard xD

  • @toriplatypus Metal is definetly not the hardest, punk is. Most metal songs focus on pedals, if you can get the hang of pedals, metal drums are easy. Punk is the hardest because you play around the kit more.

  • @st00pidp0ckets you sould go check out some of Dance Gavin Dance's work cuz Matt (the drummer) plays all over the place in all these ways i've never seen in any type of music before, try learnign one of their songs and then see if you still think metal's all about pedals :)

  • @toriplatypus You gotta get this. And kill that ska punk

  • Check out OneDrop504's channel for the best reggae drumming on youtube.

  • Sweet! Those were some delicious beats. Thanks...

  • fitso bingo dipso asbo tesco

  • Last fill sucks so bad...

  • @plasticseagulls sucks so goood!! GREEAZEE!

  • @plasticseagulls

Lol wouldn't have been so bad if he didn't finish it on the first rack tom O_o

  • how many inches is that splash??

  • @danizarmu87 looks like an 8in

  • what size snare are you playing?thanks good post

  • Your base pedel is pointing to the left... when i saw this, i stopped watching.

  • loooool beware u make a lot of flaaaa this is baaaaaaaaad

  • This helped SOMUCH

  • very nice

  • who is the best reggae drummer? i would love some recommendations.

  • @jplucknett Lloyd "tin leg" Adams is my favorite reggae drummer! Check out the albums; Augustus Pablo - This Is ..... Augustus Pablo

    King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown

also Leroy "horsemouth" Wallace on Burning Spears Marcus Garvey album is some heavy reggae drumming

  • @jplucknett CHECK OUT SLY AN ROBBIE . DRUM AN BASS DUO.

  • this seems pretty straight forward.... now try to explain bob marley's drummer.... i had to cover that stuff, i just ignored that drummer lol!

  • @gwb911 mate ur a moroon have ever watched bob marleys drumer play

  • timing and counting...just things you can feel with the time...i've never had drum-lessons and now i'm the drummer of a band... you have to learn the simple beats and then you can learn everything you want.

You may have to search for some friends and open a band if they'd like to.

with each practicing you'll get a better drummer.

now, i play the drums as long as some friends, which have a teacher....but i promise....they're not better...they're worse...and that's the truth

  • @lucaskruse Whatever you probably are playing simple uneducated 4/4 rock, you prob have no idea about music theory, and you prob can't read or count worth a shit so worse my ass

  • @thepolice911copeland and you have no idea about me! don't judge and generalize people which are getting their skills selfmade.... it was only a tip.. and your "simple 4/4 rock beats" im probably playing...tz...come on...that's your problem...you think music-theory is everything you need to become a good musician....

  • @lucaskruse so true is about the way it feels

  • Dammmn it am so confused with the timing and counting :( can any one help? cus I always missd d beat wenever I start it, reggea is d only probs I've got on drummin.

  • @mckadri1 The hi-hat part is a quarter on 1 and 3 and 2 8ths on 2 and 4 (Swung for the compound feel). The bass drum falls on beat 3 of each measure. The basis is really very simple, the rest is just about feeling the groove out.

  • Chidwe tocas chido

  • Good stuff... thanks for the demonstrations. Might you give us a little info about your drum kit and setup. What brand, series and sizes are the shells? What heads are you using and how do you tune them? What cymbals are they? Really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

  • best video about reggae drums so far!

  • i'dont understand~

  • cool beats, bad fills.

  • i shot the sheriff. oh oh oh. just thinking about that shong when i hear this

  • these beats wouldnt last two seconds at channel one

  • @louiecostello these beats helped me a lot. i had never played reggae until yesterday and watching this helped me learn how to hold a BASIC groove.

  • @pacificdrumma you sure its reggae youre playing?

  • @louiecostello listen to buffalo soldier and you'll get it :)

  • shaweeet kit

  • Ah! Very very very very good! Loved it! Well done!

  • Nice and usefull ,thanks.

  • watch reggae drummers, like dyrol randall who command this!

  • omfg...... how can you tell people this is reggae?? If you can not feel it, stop trying...!

  • Comment removed

  • @ClarkKasheta

way to go dismissing a whole genre of music

  • @ClarkKasheta Reggae is one of the most inspiring genres of music. You're so dumb.

  • You sir suck.

  • is very bad

  • cette partie m'interresse beaucoup ! 0:58

  • I keep waiting for Sting to start singing :)

  • If you don't know it, you can't fully feel it. . . and if you don't fully feel it, you will never know it.

  • Wow, sounds great. Thanks for laying down all these different reggae grooves.

  • y el groove?

  • sick beats man

  • hey im a jamaican drummer try to feel the music more than tryin to get perfect technique

  • You should feel the beat in reggae

  • wow man that is so nice

  • i must say, that lick at the minute mark was rather nice..

  • reggae=feel, not technique, even the best drummers don't have the feel of reggae, although many do

  • tay mal

  • please can a beat for me

  • Is it in 4/4? What are some good very unpopular reggae songs, I listen to blues mostly magic stick.

  • you need to get a different snare sound like a ludwig suprafonic to make it sound like a timbale like carlton barret of the wailers did.

  • I wish a Jamaican drummer would do one of these. This guy's got the patterns right but he's playing it a little loose... (no offense brother - you seem like a good drummer.. maybe just not your style)

  • sounds like steward copeland ha nice video

  • A good video, but you should play with a little more swing, or maybe you was scared by the cam (it's a kinda normal, i got it too)

  • Nice video- how are you recording the drums? It looks like the Samson mics, which I have, but what program are you using to record?

  • by 1:00 i could practically hear the nice music in the backround, nice job! thisll definately help me.

  • You guys shouldd check out videos by Gil Sarone or Dyrol Randall instead. Dyrol Randall is particularly good as he seems to be the real thing.

  • "no woman no cry"..."pass...pass pass le oinj..y'a du monde sur la corde à linge"..lol... french sland who means" giv '..giv'v..giv'v..the stick..many people one the clothesline.." don't know if is the good translate..but..yo !!

  • uhh the whole idea of regge drumming is simple anyways..plus this is a tutorial not a 'show off all your skills in 2 minutes.' Don't you feel like a jackass now?

ps. all words have a vowels in them..just fyi

  • what should I look for when buying reggae drums? I have a drumset but I don't have a piccolo or any reggae drum.

  • get a sweet sweet natural sounding hi hat, the shorter the chick sound the better. also make sure the 2 sounds of open hi hat and closed hi hat go together really well.

I don't know about the rest of the kit.

the snare drum seems to be quite special though, really high pitched and tight!

  • Man I been playing that stuff for almost 40 years and this guy is stiff and sloppy

  • make a video then.

  • sounds shit. I'd ban reggae drumming for those, who can't hear the difference between side stick sounds. horrible.

  • amen brotha xD

  • mi spiace ma non sei in grado di insegnare reggae ai batteristi

  • snare side sticking should be different souding, find de sweet spot man!

  • creo q no tienes la gracia para el reggae

  • I believe this may be the only properly miked Reggae drumming instruction video on the entire Internet, by the way. Well done!

  • Search for "Stu Roberts Reggae" and check out the first one that comes up. Great reggae lesson from a fantastic teacher, and the "showcase" at the end is just beautiful!

This is great too of course! =D

  • ese bombo bota mucho armonico sta feo

  • what sticks are you using?

  • from wood

  • nice!

  • This is really impressive stuff man. Especially that roll around 1:00 ?! Nice!

  • the last beat is used in one of BOB MARLEYS songs ... dont worry ... i think

  • Does anyone know of a good website or book that focuses mostly on the music theory for reggae?

  • pora tento fazer isso cara

  • cool, must say the camera angle really helped!

  • wow cool

  • Staighten your pedal...

  • Sonor Sonic Plus made in Germany?

  • Everytime I heard him about to start the main groove I waited for a Bob Marley song to start. Lol.

  • irie irie

  • The main thing about reggae is to feel it, not "technique" it. If you focus on getting your drum patterns exactly right, you'll never get there. The key is to listen to lots and lots of good reggae - meaning, reggae from 1970 up to about 1985 - play along, sink into the feeling, and whatever you do, don't over analyze it! Leave that to the jazz musicians. ;-)

  • Fuckin A-MEN! Someone who TRULY understands the soul behind reggae. KTF.

  • I tend to think the era of good reggae was 1968-1974. Plus rocksteady before it.

Later the music became too focused on religion. I think "roots reggae" killed it. Bands like The Upsetters and Bob Marley and the Wailers lost their charm and energy as the years went by.

Listen to Jackie Mittoo, Toots & The Maytals, early Lee Perry, early Upsetters, and early Wailers for really good reggae drum technique.

Half of the "reggae" made in the 80s didn't even use one-drop...

  • isn;t the one drop just one of many reggae riddims?

  • it's one of many reggae rhythms, yes, and certainly the most recognizable and the most "reggae". But "reggae" in the '80s used rock and pop beats, presumably to make it more accessible to the new international audience.

To each his own. If you like ANY type of music, listen to it and love it. But for people who didn't know there was a whole other world of reggae out there, I try to encourage reaching back in time.

Early '70s Bob was some of the best reggae ever created. Seriously!

  • I listen to Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff etc (and dub too).

Is the one drop with the bass drum only on the "2" of the bar? How about the "rockers" riddim?

  • Kick and side stick/snare both fall on the three. The guitar and piano "skank" hit on 2 and 4. Rockers includes kick on the 1. I think it is somewhat a bastardization of the traditional ska and reggae feel, but, as i said, to each his own.

  • rhythms. but yeah you're right.

  • the one drop made popular by carlton barret, the wailers, drummer means that theres no drum or snare on beat ONE...hence "ONE DROP"...

The bass drum and snare comes on beat THREE... listen to the song one drop by bob marley to get a better idea...

  • @lurholm

    I have to agree

  • @lurholm you just blew my f-kin mind...

  • @lurholm jazz musicians overanalyzing, well whatever man, the origins of jazz are different than contemporary jazz . also jazz is alot more various than reggae. the idea of jazz is to make improvisational music. jazz musicians are feeling their stuff man.

  • @JustusFriedolin You're right man. I should have said "jazz aficionados" - you know, the sort of people who compare solos note by note. Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and the other jazz icons sure didn't lack feeling in what they did. My apologies.

  • @lurholm toots is from the 60s! don't leave out the 60s! lol

  • @lurholm yea man right

  • @lurholm yea man right carlton barret you have to listen to, he had the feeling of real roots reggae. he is the best

  • @lurholm lol, great, I learned jazz, i guess that means im in new territory. Thanks for the advice. XD

  • @lurholm exactly right

  • @lurholm Thats true man. Reggae is just feeling man.

  • @lurholm jazz played by white college grad yuppies isn't jazz, don't worry ^-^

  • nice drum kit! love that natural wood look. makes me drool, just a little

  • muy buen sonido :O

  • Sounds like Stewart Copeland of the Rock band The Police. I know he was influenced by Reggae. You sound a lot like him. I gave you five stars cause it was very crisp clean although I don't care for Reggae to much, but I can appreciate good drumming. Great Job!

  • sabe nen fazer a tecnica rimichot !!!!
