a play a game called runescape i have the exzact same ubuntu it downloads java but i try to play it says i still need to download i dont know what to do
Yes, you can make it bloated and compared to years ago it's getting bigger. A person can also make it bloatier by installing a bunch of stuff that's always running.
That said, if I had a choice to run Windows or Ubuntu, I would run Ubuntu because of all the maintenance/security headaches with Windows and bloatiness of Windows.
However, since I'm a tech-kind of person, I like to run them all-Windows-whatever version starting at XP, Mac, and the Various flavors of Linux including Ubuntu, etc.
I agree with bogman, I have the buisiness debian iso, and I've used all of the major distros. The debian iso downloads all the software from the main server, so a debian full cd would be closer to 600 megs, along with gentoo and arch. If you want bloated, take a look at windows!
yeah i installed ubuntu a while ago, but unlike your nice wallpaper mine came with one that looked like it had coffee stains on it! but i recently uninstalled ubuntu so i could make room for windows 7, im not a fanboy but i guess im a power user :) but yeah ubuntu is a very nice os for people who dont like the way windows os's are put togeather
I run 8.10 on my 7 year old emachine laptop. Installed beautifully, laptop runs better than ever, and with wine i can run WoW with maxed detail even in cities.
I just got 8.10 after my old machine finally died because of HW failure after running for 4 years.
My complaints about 8.10 is that there is no static IP address, Samba is a bitch to setup, Apache is no fun to setup, the 64 bit version isn't supported by VMWare well, and Ubuntu really needs a freaking root shell, sorry.
8.4 is probably the best to stick with for a little while if you're a power user, 8.10 is a headache for me, but it does work, just requires research to setup properly.
My friend gave me 8.04 to install on my PC but it didn't work. He said its probably my hardware and 8.10 should work, although its a bit glitchy n stuff. I have a core2Duo, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 9600GT, dunno what my motherboard is. And I'm not sure if my netgear wirelessG adapter will work. Can someone help me?
I use 8.10 on a PC next to me right now. Granted I don't do too much out of the ordinary - web surfing, documents, online stuff, testing and reconfiguring Ubuntu to see what's new, etc. So it depends what you want to do with it.
With 8.04.1, ndiswrapper says my windows wireless driver is installed correctly, but when I try to connect to other wireless network, the "signal strength" icon displays but it just sits there on 0%.
hey i installed ubuntu 8.04 on my WD my book 500gb external hardrive and the os was messed up or something and nothing worked and it deleted everything on my hardrive. i went back into windows and i couldnt even open my external hardrive folder! i couldn't even uninstall ubuntu. any thoughts on what to do!???! please help!
I recently installed Ubuntu and now have a dual boot system for either XP or Ubuntu - I'm finding I'm using Ubuntu more and more as the days go by - I love it!
The 2 only complaints about ubuntu, are with the graphics card driver and Watching a dvd movie even play a mp3 song. God knows ive tried a lot to do those things, but i always goback to windows because i felt frustrate. I cant get any resolution better than 1024 x 768. Im not a computer genius,I know more than average people. but i really want to use ubuntu the way fans do.
Hi, I installed this version on my vista laptop. I like it a lot, except for one thing. My wireless wont work! I have an Atheros AR5007 b/g wireless adapter, and when I press my wireless button,it doesnt turn on. How do I get my Wireless working?
First and foremost, I would ask if this is just an issue with YouTube?
I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling it. If the problem continue, it is likely an issue created with add-ons. I have noticed that Firefox crashes for me (on Ubuntu) when I am on YouTube. I have attributed this problem to the NoScript add-on & (Flash conflicts).
Disable all of your add-ons and check to see if the problem still exists.
I tried ubuntu on my old pentium 3 installed smoothly wireless was an issue where it was not connecting to even unsecured wireless network booting was fine i hope they get better:)
I'm thinking about trying out Ubuntu, but I'm hesitant because I have been using Windows XP more than any other OS in my life. I'm new to this and I have some questions:
If I download Ubuntu on my computer, will all my documents be deleted or still be there?
If I end up not liking Ubuntu, can I uninstall it and get back XP?
Is there a way to try Ubuntu before actually installing it completely?
There are two options I would recommend, neither of which will interfere with your WinXP installation. The first is a LiveCD, which would allow you to boot from the CD instead of your HD so you can try it out with an option to install later.
The second option is Wubi. This program does all of the disk partitioning for you, you simply select how much hard drive space you wish to dedicate. If you don't like Ubuntu, you can uninstall Wubi in WinXP and it goes away, disk space recovered and all.
Hey, nice vid, this makes me want to try this OS out. I'm looking at getting a Dell Mini and I wanted to see how their other OS worked. I'm more familiar with XP but I'd be willing to try this. How well do Windows programs work for this?
If you don't want to spend time learning Ubuntu then choose XP. Ubuntu is a bit different and you don't just install Windows programs on it easily. There is a Windows interface called Wine that allows you to run Windows programs but again you'll spend time figuring it all out.
Investigate what Windows programs you want to run and then investigate how they perform on Ubuntu or if there is a Linux alternative.
Thanks for stopping by and watching the vid. Ubuntu is getting better and better.
The Dell Mini's are cool. I would go with XP unless you feel like learning Ubuntu. Most likely the Dell folks will configure before sending. Also, you could confirm with Dell if you can install whatever you want, so if Ubuntu doesn't work for you then you could install XP. But from what you've told me I would recommend XP.
If you get the Ubuntu version it will run much faster than XP and Ubuntu is not that hard to use and many things you may already know how to use like Firefox. But if you are not willing to learn Ubuntu then the choice is made.
Thank you for your help BillS1226, but I figured out what I did wrong, reason why ubuntu did not work the first time for me is because I first copied the download of ubuntu to a CD in a data format instead of copying it to the CD in a iso-image format, and now all works good. : )
I am having a nastily exhausting problem with connecting to my wi-fi network via Ubuntu. I click on the network tool and click "connect to other wireless network".
I type my SSID, I type my WEP key (not passphrase, but 64/128 bit hex) and automatic DHCP. It keeps asking me to input the passphrase or key again and again. I have used my key on other windows computers and it worked fine. What am I doing wrong?
Yes it's Broadcom. I heard that maybe drivers need to be installed but I am a complete noob and have no idea how to install it on Linux. But it acknowledges that it can sense the network and that a passphrase is needed...it just keeps asking..
Well, I tried to provide some links in these comments and I don't think they allow links. So search on the phrase "wireless keeps asking passphrase" in google and you'll get to the Ubuntu Forums where there are 2-3 sources you might want to read.
I appreciate your help. I figured it out and its working now. Turns out that because Broadcom uses Windows drivers, legally speaking Linux can't have that in there. You use the ndiswrapper (couldn't find it in .deb format so had to type it in terminal..ugh) and then get the BMC4318 (for my card) driver from the site (again using the damn terminal) and then restarting. They ask you for key twice (default is passphrase but my router is on 64/128 bit Hex) and then it works. Took 2+ hours but :)
Thanks! And there's actually another thing I was wondering about. Watching YouTube on Linux is great...until you go full screen. It's framy. If I download it and watch it it runs smooth but at a lower quality. In fact, pretty much all of my clips (especially HD divx and HD wmv) feel like they were downgraded in quality on Linux. They run smooth on my Windows XP with Media Player Classic (along with the K Lite Codec Pack) but not on Linux. Is it just driver issues? Any recommendations?
I barely install ubuntu and wanna try it out... Quick question, How do I install aMSN so I can use instant messaging with my contacts in hotmail? Keep up the vids... Thx
It's a great program. I especially like Kubuntu a fancier version of ubuntu. I use it all the time. Support is much better than any windows program. You can get it through IRC x chat. It is provided in ubuntu. I tried many different linux's and found this is the best one easiest to learn and operate. Feel free to ask me any questions.
i cant get xbox live to run with my ubuntu so i have to go back on to vista which crashed recently not only that but my speakers put out no sound on ubuntu plz help
I downloaded Ubuntu and desided not to install it, Why does this not come with beryl or compiz already installed.
you have to use command lines and crap, you need to be a techy to run ubuntu, I hope not everibody falls for this stuff. I could not get nun of this eyecandy working and not to mention mp3 and a whole bunch of file and videos don't work. It's unpracticle.
What hardware/OS are you running now? Mp3s and vids worked just fine for me with the setup in the video.
I did try and install Ubuntu804 on a PC from 1999 and it dumped to the command line during startup. But Xubuntu installed just fine on that PC. On the same PC Windows XP installed just fine.
These are issues that will keep Ubuntu out of the "standard" home PC arena. But, I know plenty of XP and Vista folks who've traded in for Mac or hired techs to support their XP/Vista home PC.
I have never had ubuntu I just figure out today how to download and install some things,
trying to figure out wich driver goes with my nVidia 8800 gts. Stuff did not have to be so complicated, Tech geeks love to show off "look we coud do it the hard way".
That's true. My son got Trojan by navigation one game-site. So we do the same with firefox under Ubuntu 8.04 - nothing happened. Viruses can't do nothing. Especially when you don't do these things as adminstator and i think nothing happened even if you do it as admin. I know any person who has got serious viruses to his Linux-system.
With Adobe flash 9 or 10 one can see Youtube-videos. But they have said that Adobe's flashes (not open source) are not the best. Others for videos/souds/media:
Any Linux distro in the world is more secure than Windows XP or any windows OS for that matter...there's no Linux viruses (or very few) because is not the "primary OS" in the market just like Mac so it really doesn't have any viruses so you don't need an anti-virus and that also means faster boot-up time.
They hacked a test in Canaba at spring 08. Mac OS was hacked first. Vista via Adobe's "hole" and only machine which hackers couldn't win was Linux/Ubuntu even if they tried it by 3rd "partner's" plugins, programs etc...
I use wubi to be able to dual boot with windows xp, but when installing graphics card drivers on ubuntu from wubi, it crahses and ubuntu won't start anymore.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 now. The last Ubuntu I tried did not work with my printer, as soon as I turned on the printer it downloaded the correct driver and it just works. It even found an update for my video card, which is perfect. Comes with open office installed also, which is a time saver. I would never go back to Windows now. :)
This is a nice linux distribution. I am using it now. The only problem I am having is that Opera 9.5 will not seem to work with it correctly. Where as all of my other internet applications work fine Opera just sits there and won't load a page or do anything. Yes, I have put out some effort yet to find out why its doing this. I had this same problem with Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 though. Odd thing. :)
I'm downloading it now as a rescue CD. I'm still not ready to switch to Linux. I'd want, but Linux still isn't very good with games. Sorry, games still aren't very good with Linux. The problem is in the games developers.
Once I'll be able to use photoshop without problems, along with most games, I'm definitively switching.
8.04 I can never call it Hardy Heron it feel so weird is one sleek piece of software! If you install as a dual boot it ask you if you want to get your Windows setting and if you say yes it would get all your internet setting and even the wallpaper you use on your windows partition!
Thanks man. I was always scared of Linux due to my lack of techy aptitude but I'm going to try out Hardy Heron - because I can still keep Windoze until I feel comfortable with the Linux world.
i think the lts is still supported, yes?

Thank you for your help BillS1226, but I figured out what I did wrong, reason why ubuntu did not work the first time for me is because I first copied the download of ubuntu to a CD in a data format instead of copying it to the CD in a iso-image format, and now all works good. : )

iwas able to connect to a wifi service but after few minutes i got disconnected with no apparent reason... and it keeps happening (disconnection)
freemanparin 3 years ago
I am having a nastily exhausting problem with connecting to my wi-fi network via Ubuntu. I click on the network tool and click "connect to other wireless network".
I type my SSID, I type my WEP key (not passphrase, but 64/128 bit hex) and automatic DHCP. It keeps asking me to input the passphrase or key again and again. I have used my key on other windows computers and it worked fine. What am I doing wrong?
daftrok 3 years ago
Is it Ubuntu 8.04? What brand of wireless card?
BillS1226 3 years ago
Yes it's Broadcom. I heard that maybe drivers need to be installed but I am a complete noob and have no idea how to install it on Linux. But it acknowledges that it can sense the network and that a passphrase is needed...it just keeps asking..
daftrok 3 years ago
Well, I tried to provide some links in these comments and I don't think they allow links. So search on the phrase "wireless keeps asking passphrase" in google and you'll get to the Ubuntu Forums where there are 2-3 sources you might want to read.
BillS1226 3 years ago
I appreciate your help. I figured it out and its working now. Turns out that because Broadcom uses Windows drivers, legally speaking Linux can't have that in there. You use the ndiswrapper (couldn't find it in .deb format so had to type it in terminal..ugh) and then get the BMC4318 (for my card) driver from the site (again using the damn terminal) and then restarting. They ask you for key twice (default is passphrase but my router is on 64/128 bit Hex) and then it works. Took 2+ hours but :)
daftrok 3 years ago
Well that sounds intense. Cool beans. Glad you got it working.

Dear cliv3, Make sure you'r installing updates, and you are not running on a beta. If so get 8.04.1,
and wine never hurt!

I love ubuntu!
I have it aand it's never crashed!
Be sure to get wine if you are gonna do more than linux apps.
Sure there are tons available, but I can't live without my little exe games!

How do I get my logitech cam to work with Ubuntu
Bestrong4 3 years ago
I downloaded Ubuntu and desided not to install it, Why does this not come with beryl or compiz already installed.
you have to use command lines and crap, you need to be a techy to run ubuntu, I hope not everibody falls for this stuff. I could not get nun of this eyecandy working and not to mention mp3 and a whole bunch of file and videos don't work. It's unpracticle.
samsiteone 3 years ago
What hardware/OS are you running now? Mp3s and vids worked just fine for me with the setup in the video.
I did try and install Ubuntu804 on a PC from 1999 and it dumped to the command line during startup. But Xubuntu installed just fine on that PC. On the same PC Windows XP installed just fine.
These are issues that will keep Ubuntu out of the "standard" home PC arena. But, I know plenty of XP and Vista folks who've traded in for Mac or hired techs to support their XP/Vista home PC.

8.04,
I have never had ubuntu I just figure out today how to download and install some things,
trying to figure out wich driver goes with my nVidia 8800 gts. Stuff did not have to be so complicated, Tech geeks love to show off "look we coud do it the hard way".
samsiteone 3 years ago
OH, I've had ubuntu 8.04 for just 2 days now.
samsiteone 3 years ago
download gstreamer from add/remove and you'd get more videos and music working :)

Whats funny is that I purposely downloaded a virus from limewire on my Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon laptop and nothing happened. I <3 Linux!
KingKoopa786 3 years ago
That's true. My son got Trojan by navigation one game-site. So we do the same with firefox under Ubuntu 8.04 - nothing happened. Viruses can't do nothing. Especially when you don't do these things as adminstator and i think nothing happened even if you do it as admin. I know any person who has got serious viruses to his Linux-system.

There was a question about flash working with Ubuntu in my YouTube inbox and I have not had any problem running flash in Ubuntu 8.04.
BillS1226 3 years ago
With Adobe flash 9 or 10 one can see Youtube-videos. But they have said that Adobe's flashes (not open source) are not the best. Others for videos/souds/media:
-ubuntu-restricted-extras
-w32 codecs
-sun-java5 (or 6)-plugin

in windows xp you can disable boot time, disable ur anti-virus to start up.
Run > msconfig > Startup
You do the maths
HellsHighwayTrooper 3 years ago
Any Linux distro in the world is more secure than Windows XP or any windows OS for that matter...there's no Linux viruses (or very few) because is not the "primary OS" in the market just like Mac so it really doesn't have any viruses so you don't need an anti-virus and that also means faster boot-up time.
TheGuruOfTime 3 years ago 2
They hacked a test in Canaba at spring 08. Mac OS was hacked first. Vista via Adobe's "hole" and only machine which hackers couldn't win was Linux/Ubuntu even if they tried it by 3rd "partner's" plugins, programs etc...

every windows user who wants to try a full Ubuntu system without any changes to windows should google for the tool: "Wubi"
freemind89 3 years ago
Wubi is great but I seem to be having problems with slow install lately.
BillS1226 3 years ago
how does wubi work?
ripitup12 3 years ago
Download the executable and installs on your XP PC. Creates a dual boot menu when you boot your PC.
BillS1226 3 years ago
I use wubi to be able to dual boot with windows xp, but when installing graphics card drivers on ubuntu from wubi, it crahses and ubuntu won't start anymore.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 now. The last Ubuntu I tried did not work with my printer, as soon as I turned on the printer it downloaded the correct driver and it just works. It even found an update for my video card, which is perfect. Comes with open office installed also, which is a time saver. I would never go back to Windows now. :)
hamishnz08 3 years ago
This is a nice linux distribution. I am using it now. The only problem I am having is that Opera 9.5 will not seem to work with it correctly. Where as all of my other internet applications work fine Opera just sits there and won't load a page or do anything. Yes, I have put out some effort yet to find out why its doing this. I had this same problem with Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 though. Odd thing. :)
jkeelsnc 3 years ago
Thanks for the review.
I'm downloading it now as a rescue CD. I'm still not ready to switch to Linux. I'd want, but Linux still isn't very good with games. Sorry, games still aren't very good with Linux. The problem is in the games developers.
Once I'll be able to use photoshop without problems, along with most games, I'm definitively switching.
urik 3 years ago
If you download a program called WINE you can play games and download most windows programs.
BobDoleismyBitch 3 years ago
I know, but I heard that it doesn't work 100% fine in many applications and games.
Do heavy games such as Oblivion and most applications work fine with Wine?
urik 3 years ago
You might need to have a NVIDIA graphics card but I'm not to sure...I dual boot with windoze and Ubuntu so when I wanna play games i just switch....
BobDoleismyBitch 3 years ago
Actually, Oblivion worked fine for me, but not all high-end stuff works perfectly.

8.04 I can never call it Hardy Heron it feel so weird is one sleek piece of software! If you install as a dual boot it ask you if you want to get your Windows setting and if you say yes it would get all your internet setting and even the wallpaper you use on your windows partition!

I have not tried that. Very cool.

Thanks man. I was always scared of Linux due to my lack of techy aptitude but I'm going to try out Hardy Heron - because I can still keep Windoze until I feel comfortable with the Linux world.
