Thanks for the comment. True, but in a survival situation you only have so many cotton balls or lint. You have a lot more magnesium than cotton and lint. Also the Magnesium is about half the price of a flint.
It is good to know many ways to start fire JIC. Use the file on knife to spark. I have made fire starter balls by using lint wrapped in a coffee filter dipped in parafin if you want use a file to make magnesium powder and mix that with the lint there are things made of magnesium some cars steering column bikes etc. Sit at the stove and make a shitload of these they are waterproof and are the easiest way to start a fire that can ignite wet wood. Hell roll them in gunpowder use you imagination.
Scrape the part that doesnt make sparks and put it in a pile about the size of a dime. Then take the part that makes sparks and try to get a spark to hit the pile. This can be very hard to learn at first but once you know how to do it its very easy.
A magnesium fire starter has a ferocerium rod which makes the sparks, thats what you strike. A flint rod is made with Ferocerium, Id recommend magnesium because it burns when wet and you wont need fine tinder.
Yes you can, just easier with magnesium. Birch bark is perfect for it if you grind it up into very small pieces. You can use leaves, dandilion fluff, Reeds, small pieces of wood, barks, etc.
Ya think ya should be outside on the concrete and not on a plate with only about three inches away from carpet..?
