  • Incredible and beautiful !

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom-this song was written by Bono, The Edge and Christy Moore.

  • The CD version is much better

  • I love this version!

  • The FLY is in the house!

  • way better version than the CD! U2 live is about as good as it gets.

  • Does anyone know the name of the River? And Christy's version is a way better version than U2's!

  • Cool that there is live version of this song. It's a beautiful song.

  • Does anyone know the meaning behind the lyrics? Presumed it was about Dublin from the title (the Liffey dividing north and south Dublin) but on listening to it, is it about the North?

  • @cailinaschilldara It,s about the relationship between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and the "Troubles" (without going into too much of a history lesson). Great song written by U2 and also performed by Irish legend Christy Moore.

  • @cailinaschilldara

    Its about Enniskillen

  • simply wonderful..U2 are the greatest band in the world.

  • i love u the Edge <3

  • This is a beautiful song. Have never heard before. Love it!!

  • What a beautiful song. And it also documents the transition of their appearance between Pop and Elevation era ;) Edge still had his fumanchu!

  • effy300 you are the king.i thougth the same

  • Where's Christy Moore?

  • Good to hear a different version of this great song but I still prefer christy Moore version

  • Great song! I wasn't expecting a live version of if! Absolutely awesome!

  • this sucks

  • The audience looks like they're from 1978!

  • The song was co written by Christie Moore/Paul Hewson and David Evans... (aka Bono and 'the Edge')... They're all entitled to do their own versions of it...

  • much better version than the CD...is Bono trying to look like Elvis Costello or what?

  • Amazing! I just found this and I love it! I've never heard Christy's version but you know I don't care. This version just does it for me. Amazing and beautiful piano intro. I may plan on doing an acoustic cover of this song one day, if I can find someone to play piano and what not for me.

  • Christy and Dec > watch?v=vkkeOMH1mzM

  • I love U2. But Bono is now obviously too preoccupied with how cool he is to actually "sing" a song. This version by U2 makes me feel absolutely nothing.

On the other hand, Christy and Declan's version brings me to tears every time I hear it.

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom- Spot on dude. Well said.

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom sorry pal but in case youve forgotten this is actually bonos song ! people think christie wrote it but bono wrote it and gave the song to christie so i think he can sing his own song the way he likes dont you think !

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom what the fuck ever. Like which ever version you want but this is a U2 song and I´m pretty sure Bono isn´t too preoccupied with how cool he is to sing a song. Some people have such idiotic opinion.

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom

    nope. U2s is better.

  • @AlternateTunerDotCom

and Edge and Bono wrote this song for Christy so every time he sings it he's covering a U2 song.

  • Thanks for rip this video! Is a great rare!

  • dime que rumbo tomo?.....al sur oa al norte del rio...... el que sea no me lleva a ningun lado.

  • This song should get a shot at 360 treatment.

  • everybody thinks christy wrote this song but it was actually bono who wrote it ! still christie does a unbelievable version as well ! hes a legend 2 just like bono

  • Bono isn't his real name

  • @yellowgirl1981 i know its paul hewson right? though bono is easier ..

  • What a great band, what a great singer... what a great song.

  • What a great great song

  • a few people that want to make a difference a good song a band thats inspired a voice that can be heard in many languages thank god for U2

  • really spectacular...

  • bono hasn't got a patch on Christy Moore singing this song....just doing what he always does and jumps on a band wagon of peoples sorrow and makes out that he is a saint and cares so much. pitty he is such an ignorant, vein person behind it all

  • @racademy well it's all opinion isn't it? I prefer this version to Christy's, because it is lighter and sweeter. And although I agree Bono can be a bit of a pain, he's hardly jumping on the bandwagon here, not least because he co-wrote the song.

  • @racademy check youre facts out dickhead before you jump on the bono bashing bandwagon ! he wrote that song and the lyrics and gave the tune to christy moore so i think he has a right to sing it ! and 1 more point bono hasnt suddenly started being a campaigner for goodwill hes been doin it since he joined u2 from 1976 ok !

  • @racademy sorry too inform you pal but in case youve forgotten bono wrote this song & gave it too christie ! and who the fuck gave you the high moral ground to judge bono you dont even fuckin know the man ! youre just another fuckin bandwagon bono basher who knows nothing about him part from what you read in youre garbage tabloids !

  • @racademy Bitter people with empty lives take the time to comment on things just to express how mch they hate it. Pitty you don´t know Bono personally so you could actually make an informed opinion on his character. Luckily we don´t need to knwo him to comment on the music so how about you just listen to the music dickhead and comment on that. And neyt time aknowledge who wrote the song before you go on about jumping bandwagons and someone elses sorrow fool. People like you are such asses.

  • I'm going to try and cover this at a party next week. It's a beautiful song, and it's going to take a lot of practice so I can perform it well.

  • I'm going to try and cover this at a party next week. Wonderful song, and it's going to need a lot of practice.

  • Dats shite he's a bad singer lak christy sings it far better !

  • this is not as good as christy moore.............but it good

  • an underrated song never fully gone public, i like it when i listen to it on the highway, it's a song of reflection!

  • great song but Christy puts more passion into it!!!

  • POPSTACHE!

  • espectacular me encanta este tema

  • What because hes wearing glasses?

  • because his eyes are extremely sensible to highlights.

  • wow, brilliant tune. this looks like maybe 1999.

  • Bono sounds beautiful on this song !

    Thanks for posting.

  • wahou!

    WON-DER--FUL

  • Beautiful and stunning! Thanks for posting.

  • great song...christy moore's version is great though!

  • utter pish. nobody can top christy moore singing this song

  • Top song, tops the CD version.

  • Just the bigger band on earth..

  • It's a really good look for him....

  • Awesome version but I prefer the studio version from the single. :)

  • This version is much better than from the CD. Szkoda że nie zagrają tego w Chorzowie. Pity they won't perform it in Chorzow August, 6 :(

  • I have this song with the Last Night On Earth single, it's pretty cool to see them singing in live.

  • PERFECT!

  • oh i know but i mean this version, Live

  • Maravillosa canción, supremo Bono.

    ¡Viva Flannery O´connor!

  • how can i get this as an audio file?

  • Its the b side to lastnight on earth from pop

  • Sean and Julia, Gareth, Ann and Breda. Their lives were bigger than any big idea.

  • what a song +++++++ up the IRISH

  • Even better than the real thing!

I love the original version of this song but this live one is simply great (or may I say better).

  • Christy Moore co-wrote this song with Bono and the Edge

  • its cool that they did a christy moore cove

  • I'm not the groupie type, but I remember when I found War. God hitched me to their star. I got to see them on the front row (divine intervention) cuz U2 bought the first 3 rows so he would have the real people not suits. I was in the nose bleed section in Legion Field. A man walked up with badges galore, & asked to trade seats. I thought he was trying to rip me off, but he was persistent and point me to the floor. A man escorted all the way to the front. It was 23 degrees & raining, & glorious!

  • I need some time-generous technophile to kindly explain to me how to put this gem on my Mp3 player

  • Bono's voice sounds amazing. this song's lyrics are incredible. The studio version was lacking much and bono's voice was, understandably, terrible. This is the definitive version.

  • truly beautiful song, sounds so good with the piano

  • really really really....beautiful :D !!!

  • Absolutely Superb Bono At His Brilliant Best

  • great song!

  • A striking resemblance to elvis costello in looks yeah, but not in voice. This is an outstanding vocal performance. Elvis costello

couldn't carry a tune if his life depended on it.

  • Hahaha, LOL. Don't like this version of North and South of the river, though. And I am a big U2-fan. I prefer Christy's version.

  • so powerful

  • great cristy moore tune

  • This performance is after or later of the pop era?

  • This is from the pop-era 1998

  • post-Pop, just a few months after the tour ended in Jo'burg

  • i want to play this so bad, but cant grasp the f chord.

  • try barring the first and second strings over the first fret with ur index finger, then use ur middle finger on the third string (second fret), then use your ring fingeron the fourth string (third fret).

  • try barring the first and second strings over the first fret with ur index finger, then use ur middle finger on the third string (second fret), then use your ring fingeron the fourth string (third fret).

  • Awesome, so cool.....

  • Great performance by best band ever!! Brilliant. Will miss them when they decide to hang it up someday, what they have done for the world and for the lives that they have saved and changed should never be forgotten. Thank you for the posting.

  • Try the PSNI version of this. North or South I'll Deliver.

  • ufff!!!! deep lyric.

  • great performance with deep lyric... U2 always brilliant...

  • Awesome awesome awesome

  • wat r use 2 un about there both brilliant versions!!!!so just fuck up about it!!

  • blah blah blah...I'll stick with u2's version anyday!

  • Yep! i agree with u...love U2! =)

  • it was dun for the bomb that happend in august of 98 so prob 98/99???

  • What year was this?

  • I find this version to be far superior to the Christy Moore version. But u2 is my favourite group so maybe I'm biased

  • Great rendition, does not compare with Christy's but who could compare with Christy anyway... Fair play to Bono for co-writing this powerful song.

  • bono just dosen't have the same striking power behind the song as chrity moore has, sori u2 fans, u2 are great, but chirty does this song better

  • No chance.....Christy Moore is like an Irish Dalek

  • this is an unbeleivable song!!!!!

U2 r the bst band eva!!!

  • Bono doesn't use a pick I see

  • This is a very deep song and was written by Christy Moore and U2, they wrote it together.

  • North and South of the River (4:13): Written by Christy Moore, Bono and the Edge. Produced by Christy Moore and Steve Lillywhite. Bono and the Edge: Backing vocals.

  • More info:

Christy Moore, Bono and the Edge collaborated on writing the song "North and South of the River". In 1995, Christy Moore recorded the song, and Bono and the Edge recorded backing vocals for the song. This was released as a standalone single with an orange "water" pattern on the front cover of the CD. The CD and cassette versions of the single were released on Sony Records.

  • Even more:

In 1996, Christy released his album, Graffiti Tongue which included an acoustic version of "North and South of the River". This version did not contain the backing vocals by Bono and the Edge, and was a much more stripped down version of the song. It too was released as a single to promote the Graffiti Tongue album. This time it was released on Grapevine Records, backed by "The Limerick Rake" (Grapevine, Ireland, CDGPS-210).

  • Last bit:

The longer version, which did feature Bono and the Edge, was also released on a compilation in the 90s. This was called the Celtic Heartbeat Collection Vol. 2. U2 would later record their own version of "North and South of the River" without Christy Moore and it would appear as a bside in 1997 to Staring at the Sun.

  • wonderful video, see them playing this song it's simply amazing :)

  • philip861 , it's by u2 , they originally wrote it for christy

  • this is a christy moore song, not u2

  • The original b-side version is crap in my opinion but when they play this song live it's so very beautiful. Thats the strength of U2, away been.

  • christy moore song him and the edge wrote it i think check out christy version much more powerful

  • One of U2s best songs

  • This song is lyrically and musically amazing, Ive never heard it until now, but I've heard of it. Their greatness continues to amaze me!

  • thanks for putting so great rare stuff for funs!

  • Espectacular

  • Thanks so much for this!

  • Bono sounds awesome. This should be played more often, its a beautiful song.

  • u2 is great!! :D
