@MostExaltedOne79 Actually, that's Mary's voice. Mary is most prominent on this clip. Mary has a deep, earthy, smooth Contralto voice...Flo's tone is more piercing
@MeetTheSupremes oh.my.god....thank you for clearing this up! Everyone seems to think that it's Flo with that voice, but actually it's Mary. Even I thought it was Flo (I'm 22 and I'm finally taking the time out to get into The Supremes) because Mary was so thin and tiny. Although, her appearance has nothing to do with the way her voice sounds, I was like "Wow! that voice is coming from her??" Lol

@ronaldrkmartinmartin honey, you ain't fit to pick up dog poop on a hot sidewalk! and my girl Diana always admitted she never had anything on Flo. IM SORRY FOR DIANA ROSS FANS BUT FLORENCE WAS WAY BETTER FLO WAS BORN IN THE WRONG GENERATION BECAUSE IM 22 IF SHE WAS BORN IN OURS SHE B BANK ROLLING AN HER KIDS WOULD HAD BEN SET
@chrissen1 i've got a sneaky suspicion florence and mary had a lot to do with their own undoing. mary should have worked on the love child stuff instead of taking that holiday. diana worked hard back then when it mattered. mary has to work hard now because she has to to stay in peoples' minds. diana is already entrenched there.
@wonderboyjoy I haven't seen any evidence that either Cindy Birdsong or Mary Wilson took a break from the Supremes. Motown used the Andantes to do background on a number of songs from different artists. "Someday We'll Be Together" was originally intended as a Diana Ross song, so it would have been weird to have other members of the Supremes recording on it, right?.
@34airflow Did you read mary's book?? Berry's book?? diana's book. all three make reference to the infamous 'holiday' while diana slaved her guts out. Love the supremes, but diana was tops for effort and durability.
@34airflow , If it was intended as a Diana Ross album track, why wasn't it put on Diana album track? They should have redubbed it with Mary and Cindy's backing voices for authenticity's sake if nothing else.
@SpazChat I don't think Motown considered its groups the way groups are considered today. (Other labels acted the same way, I'm sure.) Maybe the powers that be just wanted to know how the same song recorded by two different lead vocalists would sound. After all, why was the decision made to have female singers back songs by the Four Tops (and not credit those women?) It was just the way things were.
@chrissen1 Yup. I think Motown wasn't big on trios, quartets, etc. Except for the Temptations, most groups featured a lead singer (The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.) If the Supremes had continued to sound like this, there's no telling what direction they would have gone. After all, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, the Momas and the Popas, and the Beach Boys were all about a group, not a singer with a backup group, right?
@34airflow This was done mainly for business reasons. Berry could get more for showcasing two acts at one time. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Martha and the Vandellas, Diana Ross and the Supremes, etc.
no they came together and wrote down names they liked and put them in a hat and FLORENCE PIKED THE SUPREMES OUT OF THE HAT AND THAT WAS WHAT THERE NAMES WERE
@LOCKSONLOCKS No they didn't pick them out of a hat. MotownMaster is right. Even Flo has admitted that she had a list given to her and that she picked the name Supremes from, which Diana and Mary disliked as they felt it was too "masculine".
I LOVE how they jazzed up the melody on this version! Once again I liked Diana and Flo on this but Mary should've went into falsetto on some of the higher parts because it doesn't sound so hot. She can sing but she's overpowering, I can barely hear Flo. I do wish Mary and Flo would've 'ooed' on the 1st part of the verses like they usually did on this song but Diana handled it!
Funny how DraTS always sounded better live isn't it? You certainly can't say that about many singers today. Ha! Today's singers don't even sing! Ridiculous. And for those sensitive typesm I only use the term DraTS to distinguish the lineup from 70's supremes. And Diana is singing lead here.
Both Mary and Flo were great singers. Flo really had the strongest voice as admitted by Mary Wilson. And it was Flo's idea to start the Supremes. She picked out the name for the girls also. Diana was chosen as the lead singer because her voice (though not the best) was the one that Berry Gordy thought would cross over to other audiences the best. They made history and I will leave it at that.
@TheRmjr Oh my god. Grow Up! Would ya? Who gives a rat's fuck that Flo picked the name and it was her idea to start The Suprmes? Diana's voice was best in my opinion. (e.g. Mary would sound dreadful singing show tunes)
All 3 girls had very unique personalities & voices - together they made the perfect group.
Florence was the first member selected by Milton Jenkins, manager of the Primes who wanted a female group also. She did not "start" it on her own and select Mary & Diana.
Their are dozens of interviews from all 3 girls on record that show Motown wanted a new name, and helped by Motown secretary, Janie Bradford, Florence "selected" the name Supremes from the list she was handed, That is the story.
@trickkie33 Yes! Mary was really holding it down! She can sing reasonably high too. Have you heard I'll Set You Free from the Love Child album? Mary belts out notes at the top of Mezzo-soprano range with Cindy. I will be posting it soon =P
I love the FUNKY sound of the bass/drum and trumpet on this live version. I will admit they did sound better when all three voices could be heard, however singling Diana out was Berry's decision...Everyone thinks it was Diana's manipulation that caused this, but it wasn't.
Remember Motown usually toned down Florence's vocals because of her classical training she could really project.I would have love to have seen Florences solo or leads in the early days.Maybe the Motown review tours.Mary always was and still is a good singer.Frank Wilson in the liner notes of their anniversary cd said if he had a choice with the final Supremes he would have rather picked Mary to sing lead.Remember she did come to mind first to lead Where did our Love Go.
@pookiechristopher I'm glad they picked Diana Ross cus no one can deliver a song like she can! I dnt think they wud have been as big wit someone else on lead. Diana had that voice and no one sounded like her at all. So Berry made the rite choice..........in my opinion!
I wont deny Dina ability to sing.If I did not think she could not sing. I would not have or own everything they have put out.Remember all the songs where written around Diana. She is a trmendous talent ,but i dont think her voice was right for everything that they put out, especially covers.trust me If Berry had wanted to make the other two stars he could have by changing the Motown Machine ie Mary Wells for Example Diana(the Supremes) was her replacement.
@pookiechristopher That do make since! I understand wat ur saying Cus Wells for a short tym was the Queen of Motown then Diana came to the Thrown! But I dnt believe the Flo's voice would have crossed over as much as Diana's voice did! Flo had that gospel Opera voice and Diana had the Pop jazz voice that was perfect for that era! Mary was OK but I've heard her sing lead on many of Supremes songs and her voice back then isn't sumthing u wud want to hear all the time! Hope ta hear from ya!
Thanks for the comment. With Mary listen to her early stuff even the Primettes singles they where good and so was her voice.Mary's confidence waned once Berry undermined her confidence by telling her she could not sing. This did not work on Flo he got to her in other ways. But not to sleep on any of the them their leads where remarkable for girls singing on records as young as
14 or 15 Buttered Popcorn(FLO)@17.Pretty Baby(Mary)@15. and those DJ Shows(Diana)@17.
@pookiechristopher I think we all agree hat without The Supremes in our lives there wud be less joy and happiness in the world! I'm glad that we talked!!!! Somtimes i read the comments on here and people get real mean and nasty. But this was a real nice discussion! Thanks youtube Buddy!
You can't make a star out of anyone. It doesn't work that way. It takes more than a great voice or beauty to be a superstar especially a legend. There is an "it" factor that cannot be defined. He tried to make huge stars out of many who also flopped or quickly faded. It's not that simple. Diana was not simply selected on a whim or by chance. Peers like Aretha Franklin said....there was something about that skinny one in the middle. I agree and there has yet to be another like her.
Everything they "touched" turned to GOLD and then Ms Ross (and her managers, I am sure) decided she was just too big to share billing. Such a shame because they truly made some wonderful music together.
I think by now Berry was already trying to prepare Diana for a solo career. His work payed off but it's just a shame Mary and Flo couldn't have matched (or at least come close to) Diana's level of solo success.
I've always thought Mary had a g r e a t voice - many times her vocal performances were more controlled than Flo's (except for on her debut solo single RED HOT loool)
diana is so fabulous in this clip earthy sexy and the total star as she continues to be - Berry G really had a great eye for talent. This clip is so great ive had to comment twice... Have a Supreme day :P x
totally awesome - thank you so much for posting - god those girls worked damned hard no wonder the stress got to them and rifts appeared but we still love em
Again thank you so very much for posting - i LOVE youtube
I find here that from the front Flo looks fat in the dress but when you see her from the side you can see she was just as skinny as Mary and Diana LOL.
I downloaded them from youtube when SupremeGL had his account so I could watch them if I didn't have my internet - then his account was permanently disabled and then mine was (JonathanLGardner), so when I created MeetTheSupremes I decided to post some of the videos he had - as he hadn't posted them.
IMO they look ALRIGHT here but the dress makes Flo look fat from the front but wen you see the side view you can see she was skinny =S.
Anyway abut vocals, I think having Mary much louder than Flo on this performance was quite effective in giving the performance a sad/depressing feel. I think it worked with the gloomy set =)
BREAKING NEWS!! I've found quite a "gem" a rare radio interview that Diana Ross did with the CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORTATION (CBC) while she was performing at EXPO 67 in Montreal Quebec 1967. Hopefully I can display this link so you can hear the interview. Diana reveals much about Florence's departure and Cindy as her replacement. Very good interview. Apparently "they" (youtube) won't let me post it so if you're interested send me a message and I'll give you the link.
They had an earthquake in Pakistan, its too bad the earth didn't open up and oceanbound fell in. Wait! mother earth probably wouldn't even have him either. LOL!!!
@supremesfan2 Jealousy, has nohing to do with it, He's actually quite correct, considering Diana is the only one that became a superstar long after the group officially disbanded in 1977

pookiechristopher 2 years ago
She had classical training? Wow Something is learn everyday.
AuthenticFeirce 2 years ago
WWell Flo could sing classical. It was singing Ave Maria at a school competition that Mary found out how good Flo was. lol.
MeetTheSupremes 2 years ago
She sure was. Thank you for that revelation!
heartandsoul22 2 years ago
@pookiechristopher I'm glad they picked Diana Ross cus no one can deliver a song like she can! I dnt think they wud have been as big wit someone else on lead. Diana had that voice and no one sounded like her at all. So Berry made the rite choice..........in my opinion!
trollop19 2 years ago 5
I wont deny Dina ability to sing.If I did not think she could not sing. I would not have or own everything they have put out.Remember all the songs where written around Diana. She is a trmendous talent ,but i dont think her voice was right for everything that they put out, especially covers.trust me If Berry had wanted to make the other two stars he could have by changing the Motown Machine ie Mary Wells for Example Diana(the Supremes) was her replacement.
pookiechristopher 2 years ago
@pookiechristopher That do make since! I understand wat ur saying Cus Wells for a short tym was the Queen of Motown then Diana came to the Thrown! But I dnt believe the Flo's voice would have crossed over as much as Diana's voice did! Flo had that gospel Opera voice and Diana had the Pop jazz voice that was perfect for that era! Mary was OK but I've heard her sing lead on many of Supremes songs and her voice back then isn't sumthing u wud want to hear all the time! Hope ta hear from ya!
trollop19 2 years ago

I agree and there has yet to be another like her.

wow i love that begining and the dark background.

i think my fave though, is her lead on "Don't Let My Teardrops Bother You"....that should have been a single!

Everything they "touched" turned to GOLD and then Ms Ross (and her managers, I am sure) decided she was just too big to share billing. Such a shame because they truly made some wonderful music together.
BroncoMaverick 2 years ago
I think by now Berry was already trying to prepare Diana for a solo career. His work payed off but it's just a shame Mary and Flo couldn't have matched (or at least come close to) Diana's level of solo success.
Thanks for commenting BroncoMaverick.

I Love Mary's voice. She could sing. Berry was nuts saying she couldn't. What a loser.
heartandsoul22 2 years ago
I've always thought Mary had a g r e a t voice - many times her vocal performances were more controlled than Flo's (except for on her debut solo single RED HOT loool)
Thanks for commenting heartandsoul22.

Mary shines--its like a duet with Diana who seems weak here--they all seem kind of bored or nervous or something.
spintation 2 years ago
Certainly not their most dynamic performance but definately no worse than what any other pop/r&b girl-group was doing at the time. =)
Thanks for commenting spintation =)

Something about Florence! Mary sure is singing her heart out. Diane's performance was nice.

I find here that from the front Flo looks fat in the dress but when you see her from the side you can see she was just as skinny as Mary and Diana LOL.

In this performance, the hand motions are NOT in synce. They look to depressed.
wyattmilton 3 years ago
They look 'together' enough for my liking =P
It isn't easy to see their facial expressions because of the lighting and quality but they still put in a great performance.

i hear u flo & tha background diana u look kinda like me alittle its kinda scary u & mj or the only people I can see it

It is definately quite a depressing version because you hear Mary more and the set is so simple and kinda dark.

What a cool early performance!
It was odd in a way because the set was so simple and not as grand and spectacular as in their later performances.

They sound very good hear and look very good here.
You can really hear the Supremes in the background.
Jobeterob 3 years ago
