Nico was and is an amazing artist. She actually came here and played in new zealand-unreal. Why did she look so full of angst and misery? She was raped at 15, maybe that could be part of it, but nothing seems to shut the critics mouths
I don't care if you all hate it, and I don't even care that Nico herself hated it; I feckin' love the flute on this album! =D The flute, the strings and her vocals on this song are all fantastic.
I hate sounding like some lame rock history wonk but I think it's worth noting that this whole "haunting" echoing finger picked electric guitar with cellos and flues (which Nico apparently hated) was practically invented by this album's producer Tom Wilson. He employed is on Chelsea Girls as well as albums by other artists of the period like Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Velvet Underground, The sound strongly influence acts like early Leonard Cohen and Judy Collins. "Cool" electric folk rock.
nico was a stunningly beautiful woman with a beautiful, haunting voice and talent that ,unfortunately, could not compete with her insecurities. she descended into self loathing and self abuse that resulted in the loss of her talent for the world. tell me i'm wrong.
@sunra3000 it was what i took from 'nico icon' as evidence of her decent. early photos show her outward beauty. it seems almost more sad that, as you point out, and may have been mentioned in the movie, that she was attempting recovery. otherwise, i will still hold her to be a major talent with major problems that, if you go by the wikipedia article, means 15 years of serious heroine use and that's not something i would recommend. i hope your not suggesting heroine is other than distructive.
That flute really needs shoving up the producers arse. Not only is it intrinsically horrible, being a flute, the gonk responsible is playing it with all the subtlety of me playing a vuvuzela on crystal meth.
Of Chelsea Girls: "I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! [...] They added strings and I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute.
If there were no flutes forget "Chelsea Girl", you are not Nico's fans, sorry.
I've been fan of Nico for 6 years, I still remember when I discovered her first video, when there were only about 1200 visits for "I'm not saying" Thanks >Nico for being here for a short time, with us. This sequence is from the photos which were taken for her album with the Velket Underground
I'd forgotten how much I loved her music till I saw this.
She was featured on the BBC programme "The Old Grey Whistle Test", playing the harmonium(?), and John Peel (R.I.P.) also used to play her a lot on his Radio 1 show. Very intense, melancholy, and brilliant, never dull. I was lucky to see her live in the very early 80's in England or Wales (I forget). Sadly, most of the crowd did not get it and were there for New Order, The Damned, and Dead Or Alive. They had closed minds for anything else.
@LogInAnders I like the flute as well. Many say they do not because of a comment Nico made. But just because you like someone's music doesn't mean you have to agree with every opinion they have about it, even if it is there own.
Hey, did you know theres a retrospective of Nat Finkelsteins work from 20th Jan - 14th Feb at a gallery in London called IDEA GENERATION. He documented Warhols Factory in the 60's. You should check it out! :-)
This song reminds me of myself a few years ago, watching the snow fall from my lower east side apartment's window. I had just bought "Chelsea girls" and "Winter Song" transported me to a world long gone...
@Annbeauj The true songs " comming from outer spheres " often remind us of ourselves. But , but Nico is from a higher perfet and sader planet , where I spent somes twenty years too , and where life sounds pretty like Nico's songs . Marvelous but , very deeply, sadly human. Who could tell me if Nico spent her youth in Germany ?( Btwn 1938 and 1950 )
We could think some feeling coming from these heavy times have landed in her songs , but it's only my own feeling.
shes gorgeous and i love her music, but.. her voice bugs me kinda. for the same reasons that cher's voice bugs me.. its too hollow and deep :/ idk. sorry if this offends anyone, im just voicing my opinion.
how you sing is less important when your music comes from the outer spheres. sometimes human beings are channels for higher music. sometimes humans create music too, but it's very different from this.
When you sound as bad as she does though, it does matter. She sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger's handicapped little sister! I'm not trying to be mean, but I could easily believe it if told.
How you sing is important if you're a singer! How can you tell a writer that their words are less important? On the other end, if a painter draws a dot, Im going to call it crap, where it came from is not as important. The product is,because that's whats presented. Elliot Smith should have covered this song.
Great video Desertshore. I was wondering if you could help me with regards to "Winter Song"
In the film "Nico:Icon", they showed a video from the 80s of her performing a much faster "punk" version of "winter song".
I am almost positive it was winter song, because i remember distinctly the opening words "The snow on your eyelids that curtsy with age" and the first time i heard it i ran to find the lyrics to the song because they were so incredible. can you help me? Do you know that version?
i vaguely recall the footage you're talking about (was it grainy black and white?) ~ unfortunately i don't know that version of the song. sounds cool tho. this is the only recorded version i've heard. perhaps it was in the theatrical version of the film? there were a few things cut for the DVD. and thanx for the comment :)
For her music is perfect for winter.
