  • Channel 44 was the cheapie station if I recall. They always had the old icky cartoons like Casper and others. Interestingly, they were the only ones to play cartoons on Sunday.

  • KBHK meant "Kaiser Boradcasting/Henry Kaiser" (the founder of the company).

  • It's good to see that UTV kept the Field Communications sign off sequence. From what I've seen on here, CBS did a lame sign off on 44 in 2008.

  • @johnissoevil UTV was part of Chris Craft TV stations

  • What national anthem?

  • Channel 44 in the mornings...I remember "Heathcliff, Heathcliff no one should terrorize his neighborhood!"

  • @WAIATA4U I used to watch that in the mornings before school...

  • I once took a "television" course at De Anza where we learned the fundamentals of how a television station works.

    Well, what I learned was that a television company buys the rights to tv programming for example: Seinfeld, to air for like a year, and if ratings are high, then, Seinfeld stays on, along with more money (from good ratings) to buy "recent" episodes of that show.

    Old cartoons like Bugs Bunny are "cheap" to buy for air time, for some reason?

  • What's of more interest is...where did all the old KBHK stuff that used to be aired go to? Did it end up in the trash? Will we ever see the likes of it ever again?

  • Can anyone answer this question:

    KBHK is San Francisco-based, KTVU is Oakland-based...

    ...When it came to sports, why was KBHK affiliated with the Oakland A's & Raiders, and KTVU was affiliated with the S.F. Giants & 49ers?

  • Baffles the hell out me. I remember watching A's game on 44 when I was little and asked my self the same thing.

  • But you know what? I--and I don't think I'm alone on this one--would love to have the old Channel 44 format back when it was KBHK, and not KBCW.

    KOFY TV 20 did it with James Gavert (?)

  • I second that.

  • @WAIATA4U Amen. And I'd give anything for WGTW 48 in Philadelphia to go off for good and for KBHK's former sister station, WKBS 48, to return in its place.

  • @WAIATA4U, the shortlived Channel KNEW 32 broadcast raiders games for a time.

  • ...Does anyone remember Channel 44 used to run these "educational" segments in the late 70's, called SNIPPETS?

    I know KTVU did segments on multicultural and heritage stuff.

  • One such series of segments KTVU did for their "Bits and Pieces" series ended with, "I'm proud to be a _______ American", for various ethnic groups (black, Chinese, Japanes, Mexican, Jewish Native, etc.)

  • There was even a PSA segment on KTVU about "acceptance"...Gays & Lesbians.

    Two white guys with their arms around each other, as one of them said; "Steve's not only my best friend...He's my 'partner'!"

  • @tvtimetravel, Italian American, too.

  • I REMEMBER SNIPPETS! I have the theme on my iPod! (No Joke) I could never talk my parents into letting me make a carrot, nor take me seriously about the how to film I had seen on making a carrot.

    (I also remember Charlie and Humphrey! on KTVU! I miss Pussyfoot playing The Entertainer.)

  • I believe the announcer is Vern Wilson.

  • who's voice was this? I used to hear his voice all over this station back in the day

  • What's KBHK?

  • Channel 44 Cable 12 San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. It's now home of the CW network.

  • How come the station's city of license was Concord, east of Oakland? How can the FCC recorded a TV station's location, despite it represents San Francisco? Concord faces the region's tallest mountain: Mount Diablo. Ok, that explains it, no need to ask. KBHK 44 was received very clear in points east: Stockton and Sacramento. Another independent station sold its soul to a TV network, now the CW and has 3 co-stations: Hollister/ salinas (ch. 40), Sonora (ch. 51) and Ukiah/ClearLake (ch. 19). +

  • KBHK's city of license was never Concord. It was always San Francisco, and was on Mt. Sutro in the city. KFCB later KTNC, Channel 42 was licensed to Concord, and transmitted from Mt. Diablo. Not KBHK. I don't live in N. Cal anymore so I'm not sure KTNC survived the digital transition, I had heard they may not have.

  • KBHK is television station based in San Francisco.

    K = Kaiser (after Henry J. Kaiser)

    B = Broadcasting

    H = High

    K = Kilowatts

    ...I think, not sure on the "HK" part.

  • When KBHK was changed call letters (R.I.P it was a great station) I read in an article that the call letters stood for Kaiser Broadcasting Henry Kaiser.

  • "HK" stands for "Henry Kaiser."

  • Thanks a lot.

  • What did UTV stood for ?

  • Stood for "United Television." KBHK was part of the Chris-Craft television stations group from 1982-2001 and was a UPN affiliate in 1995 until the merger with the WB (to form the CW)in 2006.

  • Is the KBHK building still there?

  • No,Channel 44 now shares a building with KPIX.

  • The KPIX building is on 855 Battery St., within walking distance of the Embarcadero.

  • Comment removed

  • Before Ch.44 moved in with KPIX, where was the building located, after the station moved from Taylor St.?

  • The building was originally constructed as NBC Radio City in 1942... it was home of KGO until 1954 and KPO/KNBC/KNBR until 1967.

    A regional office of ABM Janitorial Services is housed at 420 Taylor St. today.

  • I presume the Sierra Club "SSB" was what KBHK was used for the national anthem . . .

  • Glad you found this. I know you were looking for some sign-offs. I also posted one for KTXL, but these are the only two I have.
