My mother grew up about 50 miles from Breslau in Brieg (now called Brzeg). Her family moved to Brieg from Memel (another former German city now part of Lithuania) when she was 5 years old. She was 18 when the war ended and she participated in the defense of Breslau (or in the general area) digging ditches to trap Soviet tanks. After a harrowing experience she made it to western Germany and then eventually moved to the USA. She always wanted to write a book, but she didn't. Shes gone now.

From 1939 to 1945 is a rather short period of time. If one were to go back in time and approach someone in this film when it was made and tell them what the future held for them they would not have believed it at all.

The economy was tightly controlled, there may have been little unemployment but by 1938 wages had fallen 25% since 1933. That is not flourishing, that is just eliminating much unemployment by making everyone much poorer.

There are not many people on the streets and hardly any cars on the roads. The economy was very bad off under the NAZI's. Without the war they would have been out of power in a year or two.

@ArthurHarisBomber Haha. You are a falsifier of history. Breslau never belonged to Poland. The dukes of the Polans in 996 founded a fortress with the Bohemian dukes. But the City of Breslau was always German. 1124 already German names of all civilians in town book. Poland was never a unitary state until 1386. In 1336, Silesia came to Bohemia. No Poles lived in 1744 Breslau to be expelled. The city was 100 % ethnic German in 1744. Breslau is as German as Dresden and Frankfurt/Oder.
Before you post anything, check hitory books, of you are too lazy to read history books, at least check what wikipedia has to say about the subject you want to comment, otherwise you are riduculing yourself.
BTW how about saying thank you to polish soldiers who during WWII saved your Country from German occupation and so many lost their lives doing it?

But I will never recognize the Bierut Decrees and the Expulsion of the innocent German civilians of Breslau from 1945-1947. It was a crime against humanity. 2 million Reich German and ethnic German civilians were massacred inside Polish administered territories from 1945 until 1949. A genocidal ethnic cleansing. Crimes cannot be justified by heroism.

@IustitiaPax True, they can't, and neither can you judge all by the behavior of some. Those that did the killing are guilty as well as though that allowed it when they could have done something. War is war though, it is whole nations that go to war with whole nations, not just armies. One nation loses and that means it loses territory, people and treasure. That is not a crime. Once the war was over, the killing of civilians was indeed murder.

As for the German victims: most of the German people civilians were annihilated after May 1945. It included some 9 million Germans mass-murdered by starvation, expulsion, prison camps, or in Soviet labour gulags.

Only among Polish students and some Polish nationalist professors. But the natives of the city of Breslau were Germans. The entire town was built up only by Germans. The ancestors of current Cardinal Joachim Meisner are recorded already in 1125 AD City Council books: "Konradus Meisner". Very "Polish"!
