Secretary Powell was trying, in diplomatic language, to say that Sarah Palin represents the worst of the Republican Party, that she is a bigotted redneck who, while rallying this base of the party, acted as a polarizing force who alienated most of the reasonable and intelligent people within the GOP. It is hard to imagine how the intelligent Republicans could ever again rationalize joining together with the base that Palin brings to the party. There may have to be two conservative parties.

believe it or not, there was a time back in the 80s when suburban, middle-class, rational Republicans coexisted with the base. but they didn't this time because the problems are different, more nuanced and complex. and it looks like Palin didn't get the memo that things have changed since then.

Right on, Sec Powell, but that would define a R party that wants to contribute to the debate. All I see is obstruction and non productive actions. From 2006 to 2008, Rs filibustered 95 times in the Senate. That shatters the previous record and this from the party that always said let's have an up or down vote from 2000 to 2006. You can't have it both ways.
