By any chance, do you remember Starcastle? Just discovered the remasters and they sound great! For those that don't know, Starcastle's keyboardist, Herb Schildt (yeah, the same one that went on to write the computer programming books) did some really nice stuff on synths, including Oberheim. "Stargate", "Fountains", and "Portraits" are good places to start.
this is so sweet. probably one of the best synth demos on Youtube. The space station sounds amazing. Too bad I will never be able to afford such an expensive reverb unit...
well.....how would one learn to play a synthesizer? excpesially a vintage one, i got a oberheim four voice for christmas (because my parents know that i love to make funky music ;) but i have no idea how to play a synth (i can play piano) what do i do!!!
@dm3857 you got an oberheim four voice synthesizer for christmas from your parents and don't know how to program? How rich are your parents? It'd be an amazing synth to learn on though. But to someone who doesn't know programming - the OB4 must look extremely intimidating. It's much easier to learn synthesis on an analog monosynth.
It's about time for Tom Oberheim to reissue these! The Two Voice to the Eight Voice models. You know the SEM has been re-released. It's just a shame that you can't chain multiple SEM modules together to create a multi-voice synth. I'm still gonna buy one though.
@ryanfreer77 I heard somewhere that he had a 2 voice in the works but nothing has materialized. Shame really. He's not got the resources that Oberheim had in its heyday and the 'new' SEM is an achievement in it's own right and we all benefit. Finger crossed through.
@ryanfreer77 personally I don't see why he wouldn't have just added a polychaining function... even the name incinuates it's used to add extra voices to a existing setup... if we could polychain these together, I'd buy a handful of them.
I forget but the SEMs have two VCOs. This Oberheim in the video looks to have two SEMs. So 4 VCOs and two voice was up to 2 notes at a time? I used to go into a music store that sold them at the time and drool. Very tempted to want to buy the new SEM module.
This reminds me of something from an early episode of "Nova" or "Cosmos" or any number of PBS-type educational TV shows from the late '70s. Wonderful sound! That spacious reverb really makes it imo.
It's those 2-pole filters. They won't out-squelch a moog or 303 but they have that ability to be a synth sound without taking the rest of the arrangement hostage.
Definitely a cool vid, you should put up more two-voice! :D
I bought this unit in 1976 at West LA Music, and went to the Oberheim factory in Santa Monica, where they not only answered all my questions, but I was also given a programming tutorial by a man named Gary Mielke, who was their head technician. You can Google him. He went on to work with SUpertramp and others.
Thanks for the input. Both SEM's and power supply seem to work as well as the day I bought it. What do you mean by recapped? Thanks again for your time.
If it's been in storage for 20 years then it isn't likely to be working perfectly. The pots probably need cleaning if not replacement and both the power supply and and SEMs may need recapped. In very clean condition fully checked out by a competent tech it'd fetch $2500 on ebay. If untested or questionable condition it's worth $1500-2000. Without sequencer it'll be worth $500 less.
The video camera I have access to isn't able to record line input audio so I recorded the audio to DAT. The freebie video editing stuff in windows is so infuriating I gave up trying to sync the audio for parts 2 and 3 to the video.
Very nice video and nice rig as well. You have good taste in music and obviously know how to get the best from those machines.Hope I hadn't sold my FourVoice!
Sounds great, buddy! I needs me one of thems.

Is there a way to be able to polychain the new SEM's so that we could create our own 2 voices?
