@Touye1989 LFN was at number two, and without the remix, it would've NEVER hit number one. Party Rock was number one, there's no way LFN could've beat the song. With Super Bass at that time at number three it was quickly catching up, and could've easily beat LFN. They just simply slap on a rap part, and call it a day. Because of this, her fans can download it all over again, and she'll earn TWICE as much sales a day. Plus, it'll get some hip-hop cred to, so some B.o.B fans could help out.
@MrSiter1 You do realize that the gap between LFN and PRA was due to... gasp! a remix, right? By DJ Enferno to be precise. And if you actually knew the facts, you'd know that about 70% of the sales were the original version. Katy's songs aren't TTWE/S&M.
Also, I suggest you check the terms radio edit, clean version and Mariah Carey to further your knowledge about different versions of a song making one single.

@Touye1989 Even if it was only 70%, 30% was still due to the remix. Without the remix I don't think LFN could've ever beat PRA. Besides even if the only thing holding PRA in number one was a remix, I think its still fine, because I don't think they were trying to break a record using the remix. Using a remix or a price drop to break a record is cheap, unfair, and desperate. If Katy's record label actually believed in Katy's talent, they wouldn't even make a remix. But they don't.

And my point still stands: if PRA hadn't been remixed, Katy's song wouldn't have had to be remixed to beat it. Why would she have to not use a remix when everyone else is doing it? She doesn't make the rules, she makes the most out of them.
As far as Janet is concerned, charting tactics were in effect back then too. The singles were kept unavailable for purchase until their radio peak, prices were slashed every now and again...
@Touye1989 I never saw PRA's remix in the iTunes OR the Amazon charts. Which probably means that the remix was barely known, and not much people bought it. Meaning it probably didn't even help a little. Plus, it's pretty clear that Capitol dropped the price of TOTGA and made a remix with B.o.B so it can hit number one. Without it, TOTGA would still be either on the 9th spot, or the 15th spot. Of course, a little assistance from B.o.B will surely make it number one.
@MrSiter1 If you look at a real-time I-Tunes chart, like KWORB or ax.phobos, you should see the DJ Enferno remix of Party Rock Anthem in the top 100 about now. Don't know if it'll last long enough to make the rolling chart on iTunes page, though, considering how they move...

And with all this publicity she's been getting recently, I feel like TOTGA's gonna have some kind of rise from both sales and airplay. As Billboard has pointed out, nothing Capitol did was against the rules. J-Lo, Rihanna, Mariah... also did remixes. Plenty of artists did discounted for charting purposes too (like MJ's You are not Alone). Not all of them hit #1.
LFN was #2 without any help. TOTGA #9 and on its way up. No amount of promo seems to be doing anything for MTN or 4's singles...

But yeah, Billboard's way of crediting the biggest selling version of the week makes for odd things like Spears' #1. Then again, Lauren Bennett gets one for PRA and she only sings one line on repeat... That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Also, I suggest you check the terms radio edit, clean version and Mariah Carey to further your knowledge about different versions of a song making one single.

@Touye1989 Even if it was only 70%, 30% was still due to the remix. Without the remix I don't think LFN could've ever beat PRA. Besides even if the only thing holding PRA in number one was a remix, I think its still fine, because I don't think they were trying to break a record using the remix. Using a remix or a price drop to break a record is cheap, unfair, and desperate. If Katy's record label actually believed in Katy's talent, they wouldn't even make a remix. But they don't.

And my point still stands: if PRA hadn't been remixed, Katy's song wouldn't have had to be remixed to beat it. Why would she have to not use a remix when everyone else is doing it? She doesn't make the rules, she makes the most out of them.
As far as Janet is concerned, charting tactics were in effect back then too. The singles were kept unavailable for purchase until their radio peak, prices were slashed every now and again...

@Touye1989 I never saw PRA's remix in the iTunes OR the Amazon charts. Which probably means that the remix was barely known, and not much people bought it. Meaning it probably didn't even help a little. Plus, it's pretty clear that Capitol dropped the price of TOTGA and made a remix with B.o.B so it can hit number one. Without it, TOTGA would still be either on the 9th spot, or the 15th spot. Of course, a little assistance from B.o.B will surely make it number one.

And with all this publicity she's been getting recently, I feel like TOTGA's gonna have some kind of rise from both sales and airplay. Like I've stated before, if Capitol believes in Katy's hardowrd and talent alone, they wouldn't make a remix at all. If MJ can do it, can't they believe that Katy can?

"The One" is one of my favorite Katy Perry songs ever but B.o.B. doesn't fit into this at all... If she added a verse near the end and invited some other Pop diva the song would have shot to #1 easily even though I think that's kind of cheating... Like the "S&M" Brit-RiRi thing... Yeah that was totally manipulative and kind of shows how desperate artists these days are to just sell digital songs and make chart records than to actually make enjoyable, meaningful music..

Can I just point out that the people complaining about her using other artists as a 'remix' of the song are totally WRONG!
Snoop Dog was on the ORIGINAL MIX of California Gurls.
Kanye West was on the official E.T single release, not a remix after it was released.
Last Friday Night had ALREADY CHARTED AT #1 before Missy Elliot was added in a remix.
Those songs went #1 in their own respect. This is clearly an effort to get her the 6th number, but the others got there on their own!

@MrSiter1 Tinie wasn't an offical remix and ET stayed at #1 for multiple weeks, like LFN (the 2nd week was without the remix).
As Billboard has pointed out, nothing Capitol did was against the rules. J-Lo, Rihanna, Mariah... also did remixes. Plenty of artists did discounted for charting purposes too (like MJ's You are not Alone). Not all of them hit #1.
LFN was #2 without any help. TOTGA #9 and on its way up. No amount of promo seems to be doing anything for MTN or 4's singles...

Or the song has to be a lead single or never-before-heard song.... It's a good strategy but here's the thing.. When Rihanna remixed S&M with Britney the song shifted 200K copies on iTunes and went #1... giving Spears a #1 for her discography that she didn't deserve... It's kind of cheating I think..

@HighwayUnicorn That's exactly my point. The songs Katy remixed were huge hits even before the remixes, it just gave them an extra push like when record companies slashed the prizes in the 90s.
But yeah, Billboard's way of crediting the biggest selling version of the week makes for odd things like Spears' #1. Then again, Lauren Bennett gets one for PRA and she only sings one line on repeat... That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

@Touye1989 Well at least Lauren Bennett was credited from day 1 of the song's release... Sometimes artists are credited even if they don't sing at all... Like John Mayor's "Half of My Heart" with Taylor Swift... Taylor only harmonizes on the song... And more recently "We Found Love".Calvin Harris only produced the song and he gets an 8week run on the #1 This criteria is bullshit to be honest.
Anyway with her divorce now... I think this song will shoot up to the top. What do you think?

Hopefully LMFAO tumbles soon and Adele doesn't rise too fast. This song is probably one of her best and deserves all the hype and credit it can get.

The rapping fits the song, as the lyrics are talking about 'The One That Got Away'... but the transitions between rapping/singing don't blend! It's horrible!

If they needed to make ANOTHER single off the album they should have chosen pearl. It is an amazing song that shows us a deeper side of Katy. I absolutely love Katy...and B.O.B, but this remix is sadly terrible. Music is not about breaking records! It is about making people happy and this song isn't exactly doing that. Just my honest opinion. I still love you Katy!

I think people often forget that record labels do as they please. Katy MAY have said no to this, but they did it anyways. I will say that Capitol just wants her to have another number one,.
