The guitar comping and improvisation that prince does on this cut is marvelous. True musicianship. He is truly one with his instrument. As for Satriani and Vai, they are great at their style of music. But Prince covers all styles and does it ingeniously. He can cover James Brown, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Latin Jazz and Santana and Led Zeppelin all in one show and arrange all these different songs in a new and refreshing way. That's GENIUS!!! Oh yeah then come back to this own unique style.

Tender Surrender - Vai says that he'd sent it to Prince just to listen to and after Prince did it live in a concert in Japan someone sent Vai a bootleg of it and when he heard it he (Vai) screamed, woke up his wife, and felt great. If a guy like Vai respects your work - what do other average joe's like KBM opinions really matter?

There's just alot of nerdy and mathematically "correct" technical players out there that doesnt really care about the attitude, personality and soul in music. They care only about the technique. There's thousand of people that can play some Jimi, but few of them has the soul to give it substance.

@njin and what I think Prince is bringing here is not the technique alone, but the performance and choice of tunes to gain the attention of the listener without trying to over play. He is complimenting the other instruments while making it extra fun. His timing and licks is probably not hard to play for you, I dunno. But I have yet to hear someone make funk sound as fun and enjoyable as Prince does. And yes, I'm no guitar wizard, but I've got ears. Do you have to be a politician to discuss?
