There is a lot of design flaws in the freefall boats , one is the seating that in many cases have a maximum limit of 70kgs , never more than 100kg s on more than one occation i have found broken seats during inspections.
second big problem is the recovery after drills this is both dangerous and you risk both damge to equipment and injurys . its ok to do in a calm port but on tankers you are often limited to do it anchorages exposed to waves
@klinger75 Those must be some pretty old lifeboats then. Yesterday I did a 2.5 seconds freefall drop from 30 meters - on a lifeboat that has been dropped over 1000 times with no damage to the boat. There are no weight limitations either (the seats are welded to the hull). It was awesome.
@Sp1kerPistol i have inspected a lot of boats even highend brands with only 2-3 years in service suffers this problem , Unfortunatly the fact is that not all drops ends in fun and laughs .
@Sp1kerPistol After hearing some of the stories about how they can go wrong and how easily they can go wrong (like the test launch where nobody noticed a hairline crack in the hull and it turned inside out on impact and sank like a stone taking everyone inside with it) I'd still sooner take my chances with a davit boat.
@Paraffinmeister The only thing that can happen is a lauching in which people inside are not strongly maintained by their security (for head also since the impact is pretty strong).
Lifeboats and liferafts etc are checked every week by the officer in charge so there is no chance to have a crack in a lifeboat during such drill :)
@Maninnen I'm fully aware of all that, I'm a 4th engineer and I've done the CPSC course, I still don't trust free fall boats. Believe me, it's entirely possible to not notice a hairline crack in a fibreglass boat!
@Maninnen Cool, i'm a french cadet myself :) I also agree with you, just wanted to say that an accident happenned on the container ship CMA CGM Christophe Colomb, the security officer and a cadet, both french died durind the lauching of a lifeboat (not free fall) a davit one the hooks have probably broken so its of course really dangerous!
During my boarding they used strenghtened straps in addition to the hooks
@danbo1138 no dashboard. id rahter have no teeth than die on a sinking ship because the life raft got caught in the crane rigging that no one new how to operate.
I did this today, from 15 metres. Totaly awesome!

I'd sooner take my chances with a davit type boat. Slower, but alot safer.

@Paraffinmeister Safer ?... like this ? --> watch?v=kGVIt1dBmSk&feature=related
Freefall lifeboats are as safe as it gets, and the impact with the sea is actually much softer than what it looks like from the outside.

@Paraffinmeister That's a made up story - never happened. Truth is, there has NEVER been a serious accident with free fall lifeboats EVER.

thats well good but how do you get the lifeboat back on the ship?
adamjmsouthend 2 years ago
well if youre leaving a ship in a lifeboat, odds are you wouldnt want to go back.
surfandsk8 2 years ago
lol yh i know that but this is just a tester so they obv need to get it back on
adamjmsouthend 2 years ago
You hook it onto a hydraulic crane called a davit
ipodsim 2 years ago
If need be it is lifted with a crane BUT if the lifeboat in launched it is because the ship is going DOWN
