I use paracord for almost everything. It's great stuff. Unfortunately, when it comes to the cable for the cablecam, paracord has too much stretch to it. In half of my video, I'm using paracord, but after working with it for a while, I realized that I needed a static rope instead.
nice job man, the design is great for small camera like yours. i have a dslr and plan on making a cable cam for it but i think i might make this one for my gopro. im not familiar with the types of cable to use. what would you recomend? i want something that wont create too much friction with the pulleys. thanks.
For the GoPro, anything should work. As for a heavier camera, you could probably still use a thin climbing rope (actually, accessory cord, since it's not meant for climbing). They're rated for thousands of pounds, so shouldn't cause too many problems. Try going to a climbing store and look at the really thin stuff. You'll be surprised how much it can hold. Even 5 mm cord (check REI.com for accessory cord) would be strong enough for what you'd be using it for.
Just make sure you use PVC primer and cement on all the joints that don't need to move. I can totally see this thing falling apart in mid-flight. Other than that, it's a great design, and I can see many practical applications for it.
Great suggestion. I've never glued anything (mostly due to laziness), and it has held up so far, but coming apart is always a possibility. It's one of the drawbacks to using friction-fit PVC for everything.
ha ha !! u r funny! thanks for making me laugh! Good project! I saved this so I am going to make one for my gopro camera!!! one problem is ... I need to watch slow motion how to make some crazy knots :) thank you for this video!
Please put up video with the cablecam on the GoPro! I'm seriously looking into a GoPro Hero, and I'd love to see how footage from the cablecam looks with one of those cameras.
And yeah, I know that the knot information is fast -- I was just worried that it would be way too long if I took time to show all the knots in detail. The nice thing about the internet is that if you have the names of the knots, you can look up fifty other videos on how to tie them!
I think I'm convinced. I've heard pretty much only good things about the GoPro, and it would open up a lot of avenues for filming (unicycle helmet cam), new camera mounts, and hi-def and slo-motion. As soon as I can save up my pennies, I think I'll be getting one.
@PacoWarabi im a mountain biker ( dont check my channel for videos ive only had my cam in the winter) and snow boarder and i love it. So far ive only started messing with it and havent filmed anything in full hd but there are at least a million mounting options with the thing its amazing
That's a lot of fun! Just wondering (and I haven't tried this) whether you could just hang the camera upside-down from it (to save doing all the counterweight stuff) and then invert the footage in editing? That would keep the construction a lot simpler.
Good idea. The one big problem I see is then the camera is the lowest point, meaning it's more likely to hit branches, the ground, etc (I'm not very careful when I set things up). But with the right clearance, it would definitely be simpler.
FANTASTIC (and fun to watch!). I have been wanting to make soemthing like this, but was not sure of how the final footage would look... and I was not sure how to compensate for desired speed... such a simple solution you came up with for that!
Not Brazilian, but I am a Luso-phile. I lived in Brazil from 1997-1999. Not too much chance to speak the language now, but I majored in Portuguese lit in college. I root for the Selecao (and Cruzeiro) and have a number of Caetano albums. I even own, "Only the Strong."
Thank you. My Turkish is nonexistent. I call it "Hepsi Senin Mi?" in the end credits because that's what I found on Wikipedia. I wouldn't know the difference!
The cable cam was cool but i was most impressed by you knowledge of knots , haha. You should make a video about rope management. I know a few of those from my rock climbing days. My nephew still climbs, he'd appreciate it .. anyways .. cool video .. i'm building a heavy duty cable cam now .. just searching around for ideas .. thanks for the vid .. check out my guitar vid's when you get time .. cheers jeff Jeff Williams White Wolf Film & Audio Jeff Williams Publishing - ASCAP NC USA
Glad you liked it. As for the rope management, that's an area I'm not very good with. Usually my ropes get all tangled up. But since I rarely use more than 20 feet or so, it's not a big deal. It's more of a problem with climbing ropes (and rock climbing is one thing I've never gotten into).
Yeah right, you got a request for a cable cam design. LIAR! We all know this was just a shameless self promotion of your ubber knot tieing skills. No one likes a SHOW OFF! j/k Great vid.
Great design. At first, when you were putting it together, I thought it had an awful lot of parts but. . . once you demonstrated it I can see what an ingenious design it is. Good job!

I think that has a lot to do with the low-quality pulleys. I've actually watched the wheel part of the pulley wobble as it moves (not built to exact specs). If I got some with bearings instead of metal on metal, they would probably work better.
when i get my new editing software, il hopefully make a new channel about film making. il put the video on there as soon as i can and send u the link.
Excellent work, Paco! Shame the first upload had the audio disabled. I had the same thing happen to one of my videos (testing a windscreen camera mount) because I had the radio on. You wouldn't happen to have any ideas on a windscreen mount? Mine was a bit bouncy. 5 *s!!!
I'm annoyed with the disabled audio thing. I think the Fair Use doctrine needs to be better explained to the Recording Industry.
As for a windscreen mount, sorry. I use the onboard mic (hence the fairly low-quality sound in my videos). Someday I'll have cooler gear than my hundred dollar camera.
I agree that someone needs to explain the constitution to the WMG (Warner Music Gestapo).
I think I have come up with a better windscreen mount (auto windshield mount) utilizing modifications of one of your earlier projects. If testing works out, I'll post how to make it and send you the link. Thanks again for sharing your ideas with us!
I'd love to see your windscreen mount! It does my heart good to see someone take one of my projects and run with it. I put up my videos, but rarely get to see anyone else's versions of what I do.

It does shake quite a bit though and may not work with heavier cameras.
