What a beautiful song. It is one of my favorites to cover. I hope daneslav got a new bike, but at least he has a great story to tell for the rest of his life.
Contrary to the 90s Grateful Dead haters. 90-91-92 & 93 were good years. Lot's of new tunes, some hit's & misses but a good time had by all. Now 94 had it's good moments too, lot's of them. I'm on the East coast and saw the band a million times in my area ( NJ - NYC ) and NEVER left disappointed. Now 94 and for certain 95 would have been the years for the band to take a break. You know...I was born and raised in Ventura, 30 yrs....and then I moved from home, because of babies and the need for money...Dam...Big mistake. But a little memory. When the dead started coming to Ventura...boy what a mind blower. At first- it scared hell right into me...lol... it scared me, hell the trip I took, Not for the weak. But I have to say, I’ve grown to appreciate Gerry Garcia's music, Its part of me. I draw on it constantly, while entertaining myself In my one man GargeBand. Winks
One party in particular I remember her telling me about. Said someone knocked on the door during the party, and someone said "who is it". The guy outside the door said "The police" as a joke. She said one of the guys in the party took off running - right through the plate glass door. And that was on the second floor. Said everyone looked outside to see that guy throwing stuff away and running down the street. What a memory.
I was born in San Francisco in 66'. And I remember my mother telling me that the Dead, as in the entire band, had partied in our living room plenty of times. Wish I could remember it. I was too young.
what exactly is this song about? i'm thinking that it is about drug abuse but i am not sure. can anyone explain it to me? i know that jerry garcia had a problem with drugs since he smoked a lot of marijauna laced cigarettes and all and so i guess thats why i think that this song is about drugs.
seeing as he died from doing cocaine that maybe they should use this song as an example to our children not to do drugs!!
@craismith i think some drugs are ok , as long as you use them in moderation. this song is up to the listener to decide what its about with. jerry died because of heroine addiction ( not a good drug in my opinion), and im not actually sure that "lady" gagme is clean, just dont mention her on a dead video again, cus some of the less nice deadheads will troll you hard.
@DontMurderTime "My god, this world is beginning to go to shit."
"beginning"???
Srsly, I greatly admire yr equanimity in the face of many majorly evil & truly scary trends.
SyFy writer Rob't Heinlein (who was not the crypto-fascist ppl who haven't actually read his work sometimes think he was) had a theory that the 1 sure sign of a culture past the tipping point & doomed is the disappearance of simple courtesies from daily existence.
@craismith The title is sarcastic, its an alegory about the devil. In it hes being chased by the police, he trusts the devil who gives him money, the devil betrays him and takes his money back and is now chasing him for his soul, Infact the begining is ambigous hes either chased by police hounds or mythical hell hounds. Its not satanic Jerry Garcia is catholic The message is dont deal with the devil, the devils a dick.
When the 'Dead do long instramentals, it has an almost hypnotic effect. A very mellow, relaxing, laid back effect. I love the Grateful Dead and sorely miss them and Jerry Garcia and Pigpen.
I think Hornsby sounds killer..besides he helped them out when Brent died. They appreciated that he could just come in and get shit going...read the book titled "Garcia-An American Legend"---great read and loads of insight to the whole fucking thing..I couldnt put it down..also personally I could do without Vince
I MISS YOU JERRY......every summer that passes by I miss not spending money on deadshows.... No other band can compare to the shows you had.... You know our love wont fade away

@jahwinter420 HEY GUYS, It's been 3mos now so let's give jahwinter420 a break. He's come down by now, looked in his bathroom mirror,whispered-FUK ME,asked his cat what the hell happened, and took his parrot out to lunch.
That's a really cool story, I wish shit like that happened to me, my biggest story, being a sox fan, is that Stephen King refused to give me an autograph or take a pic at a spring training game in Ft Meyers Florida.....dissed...your story is much cooler............
I remember when I was about 8 years old I used to pedel my bike through the Haight Ashbury district. One day I was going down Ashbury and saw people hanging out front of this house. I stopped and the people said "hey kid can I try your bike?" They seemed really high but I said ok. One guy hoped on and seemed really drunk. He ran it into a fire hydrant and laughed. Figured out later that it was the Dead and that person was "Pigpen." My dad was really mad, but I told him I wrecked the bike.
@daneslav I've seen you post this comment on more than one dead video and I enjoy it everytime i read it. I've even told it to friends, its grate. What a grate memory.
By the mid-80s, Jerry's voice was touch and go from show to show. His playing remained choice until Spring of '92, and the solo here is no exception.

I tried for years to get into the Dead and just couldn't see the appeal. A friend recommended a live show that was supposed to be pretty good - I downloaded it, listened to the entire thing, didn't like it at all. Listened to American Beauty and a couple other albums, same deal.
I heard this song for the first time a couple months ago - this is what finally made me change my mind about them. :-)
I like how gordanberret is pretending to trip and has obviously never taken a hallucinagen or even heard from a friend who wasnt lying about having taken them about what there like.

The Greatful Dead was not just about the music, but a way of life. I lived in San Francisco and got to see the Dead live. It was amazing! You would meet people who travelled with the dead for a year. That was some serious street cred. If you venture up to Marin (north of San Francisco) the Dead is still alive and well. Peace y'all =-)
That's for damn sure. He would tell me stories about getting a dropper of acid and would just walk around all fucked up and drop it on people necks. He only did it to people he knew were straight to trip.
Jeez! FINALLY I find an actual clip of the Dead, not some joker covering this song. Took me a long time, and thank you ever so much for posting. Blasted fools and their covers don't bother to include 'cover' or whatnot in the title. Well done, sir.
I always saw this song as a reminder that there's a little desperado in all of us and the best way to handle it is to keep a smile upon our face and handle the heat with a little grace. Sometimes when I listen to the chirpin' on these posts, I gotta wonder.
I passed Phil Lesh today in my car in Kentfield, Ca at an intersection. I let him pass in front of me and he slowed down in a grey Ferrarri and looked right at me and said "Thanks man" for letting him go. The car was crazy. A very cool encounter for me today for sure.
yep, bad enough having to tolerate Vince's cheese-o-matic casio-$75-special tones, but the accordian is just too brutal. (Vince's solo on this really makes me miss Brent..)
Ps, always loved Bob's solo on this tune ... I think it's the only tune other than the blues numbers that he took a reg. solo on. It's so weird... he always does the same thing
Awesome. My son has been to Jimmy Buffett and Ozzfest, my daughter to Linkin' Park and Korn, and Aerosmith, both before they were born. My ex wife was pregnant when we went to those shows. They'll have some stories when they grow up. haha
hey genius, comment was a reply to sk8terguy85 about how his mother went to a Dead concert while pregnant with him. If you possessed an IQ above negative digits you may have been able to figure that out on your own. Instead, it seems as though I must spell it out for you.

Why didn't you & your EX make your marriage work? Everyone is divorced and talking about their ex's. Nothing to be proud of dude. I feel sorry for your kids. They're not even grown and their family fell apart. I'm sure they'll have stories about how their parents gave up on their marriage. Quitter & failure, bad parent too. I'm sure you have a girlfriend too. Sounds like you think having an ex is just part of life. Go hug your kids dump the girlfriend and get back with your wife you jerk
wow, you are so insightful. Let me enlighten you a bit. My ex wife was a drug addict who chose her pills over her kids, she walked out, I have full custody of my children, they are with me all day every day, and I do not have a girlfriend because I do not have time in my life date when I am working full time to take care of my family. A little FYI, it takes two people to make a marriage work. I continued trying for 3 years after we split up, so don't call me a quitter, you ignorant fool.
my mom did!!! i didnt like it at first but i was a baby i remember it being to loud.. but i love them wish i cuda remembered more, at least i can say i was there

I think it's the only tune other than the blues numbers that he took a reg. solo on. It's so weird... he always does the same thing

thumbs down this comment all you want.
This is AWFUL. between the keyboards and the two drummers this is the worst version of this song I've ever heard.
Other than that, love the song and the dead.

Awesome. My son has been to Jimmy Buffett and Ozzfest, my daughter to Linkin' Park and Korn, and Aerosmith, both before they were born. My ex wife was pregnant when we went to those shows. They'll have some stories when they grow up. haha

so what, that has nothin do with the Dead
StStephen14 3 years ago
hey genius, comment was a reply to sk8terguy85 about how his mother went to a Dead concert while pregnant with him. If you possessed an IQ above negative digits you may have been able to figure that out on your own. Instead, it seems as though I must spell it out for you.
drgntatu 3 years ago
You say nothing about going to a dead concert with your pregnant ex wife

Why didn't you & your EX make your marriage work? Everyone is divorced and talking about their ex's. Nothing to be proud of dude. I feel sorry for your kids. They're not even grown and their family fell apart. I'm sure they'll have stories about how their parents gave up on their marriage. Quitter & failure, bad parent too. I'm sure you have a girlfriend too. Sounds like you think having an ex is just part of life. Go hug your kids dump the girlfriend and get back with your wife you jerk

Hey douche, go to the beach and bury yourself will ya. Dead rule, you're a judgemental prick, and life goes on.....
Slikrik1212 3 years ago 3
wow, you are so insightful.

Dear Dad,
Get a life. You and mom used to do drugs together and you ruined her life & mine.
She deserves her children back and you gone.
Your Son,
