  • Looks nothing like film footage, even with depth in the shot/background, the image feels flat.

  • I personally think the video looks great keep up the good work!!

  • i think it looks great, would love to see how it looks with 2 actors in a conversation

  • hahaha u eat flowers :3

  • Good work!

  • I don't understand why so many people insist on arguing film vs. digital. It's like trying to argue oil paint vs watercolors. You can achieve amazing results with both. Just because someone likes the results of one of the tools doesn't mean that they believe the other is inferior. What matters is the hand behind the brush, just like what matters is the eye behind the camera.

  • @Cotygeek I agree to a certain extent, but video has always strived to be film. People these days say RED is almost as good as 35. Thats just it, it's trying to be film. Film is real, photons of light expose the grain. Video is binary, 1's and 0's, data. Nothing real about it. 8 bit video is limited to 256 colors. Film isn't. Film has better latitude and depth of field. Video is popular because it's convenient. Film is popular because its beautiful. I love both, but Film is better.

  • @ahafnor Unfortunately, as of earlier this month, it may be a moot point. Digital has just about officially taken over as every major camera developer, including Panavision and Arri, have just announced that they will no longer produce film based cameras. Sure there's still plenty of stock out there for sale, and there will always be companies that try to keep it alive, but I feel that digital may very well surpass film. That would have been a laughable statement five years ago. Not so much now.

  • @Cotygeek Its just sad. Film was standardized. But digital is just a nightmare of continuous obsoletion. You can always get one more line of definition and one more color code written, and then every video camera from yesterday is out dated. I have faith in Film stickin around. Aronofsky shot Black swan partially on super 16. There is hope.

  • @ahafnor I feel it's a matter of evolution. Give digital time. It's still young. Consider it in its two-strip technicolor days. I have a feeling that soon RED will honor film's memory. Jim Jannard himself said recently that he strives to make his cameras great because 1080p isn't a suitable successor to film. The standard for digital is rising quickly. There's already talk of 3K becoming the new standard for digital, but I have a feeling it'll be higher than that by the time it arrives.

  • @ahafnor Also, I'm not an advocate of Film being replaced. I'm an advocate of Digital being accepted, something that I believe has already happened.

  • not to be taken the wrong way

31 - 35 looked like those cheezy sci-fi channel movies (the once they make like "gatoroid")

    i don't know why though.....

  • Whats the name of the song? It is creative commons?

  • cool, I liked it!

  • take a look at mye Panasonic sd60 videos, great quality.

  • Still looks like digital to me.

  • @Black7Cloud

Thanks for the constructive criticism. Do you have any more tips for me?

  • @JoelMorehouse

Film look doesn't mean throwing in some black bars in there and changing the contrast and applying some color correction (which looks horrible when a 8bit long gop codec is used by the way).

Film is more about Dynamic range, detailed highlights, depth of field, the way film motion looks, film grain, etc. Just look up some 16mm and 35mm here on youtube. This looks nothing like film to me.

  • @Black7Cloud I feel the same way, youtube is way crowded with this type of video that misconceives film look with some "artsy" stereotype and color correction.

  • @surferboy36O They're saying it has a film "look"---meaning it looks closer to film than some nitwit using their dad's camcorder. They're not saying they're on the level with what you'd see in the movies.

  • @moonrice555 I know. Read Joel's comment and mine, they are pretty much self-explainatory.

  • @JoelMorehouse Nah, it looks perfect for the drama films, great camera shots and color corrections.

  • @JoelMorehouse looks like a digital to me... :0... lol

  • @JoelMorehouse You can buy film grain packages and place them over the footage with a transfer mode, similar to the film burn effect you used at the start.

  • @Black7Cloud that footage looked great. You suck.

  • @apmusic2010 To an amateur, yes.

  • @Black7Cloud you probably should have gone to specsavers then

  • I have a question... does this camera have that wheely thing that slr lenses have that changes the focus? or can you change the focus yourself somehow? haha sorry for the bad explanation... wheely thing :P thanks!!

  • lololol when I saw you eat that I was like:

    Really man?... -.-

  • Hey, I have a mac and want a really good video camera thats compatible. Preferably Canon. So is this one good? And is it disc or can you hook it up with a chord? Does it work on imovie or final cut?

  • I absolutely love the shot 43 seconds in!

  • Everyone Type "Won" Before youtube.com

  • Looks great. Love the vignetting and the anamorphic ratio.

  • WOW! This camera is sick! Anyone have opinions on this vs the Canon Rebel T2 or T1 for film?

  • TUTORIAL!!

  • Good Man!

  • What is the name of the color effect/correction????

  • it looks like a video game

  • cool short dude. I've been inspired.

  • great job, how did you do those red and orange flashes at 0:09 ?

  • @blindof69official

It's called a film burn. It's what happens when film gets exposed to light. I just got my hands on some stock footy and played around with blending.

  • Do you think you could make a tutorial on how to make your film so cinematic?

  • @SlothThunder

I wish I had the time. I honestly just spent some time playing with the 3-way color corrector in Final Cut, but I would also recommend checking out magic bullet looks if you're going for something quick and easy. Most, if not all of the effects are overcooked, but tweak em and you can make some useful stuff.

  • looks great!

  • is colour correction just like a mode on FCP or is it u manually changing settings, i am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro cs5 and wasnt sure if it was on there?

  • @kentos101

I'm sure Premiere has something similar. It's just a filter that lets you change the white balance of shadows, highlights, and midtones.

  • damn O.o like a film in the cinema

  • did you make this 24 fps then render it at a higher framerate? or did you render it at 24 fps?

  • @TheAceofNate

This was filmed so long ago I don't really remember, but I think I shot natively in 24p.

  • @JoelMorehouse how do you do that zooming on a particular object with the rest blurred out? Is it possible to do that with after effects even when I shoot a normal footage?

  • nice

  • whats the effect is at the very beggining

  • Very nicely done. Look great!

  • what program you used to make a cinematic look ?

  • LOL too funny. Awesome job and great shots

  • Comment removed

  • looks very good

  • LOOKS GREAT, INSPIRING!

  • i really want to know how you make the intro, with the orange and yellow "thing".

  • Shoot film when you want to look filmy!

  • Love the shot at 1:05 especially when the sound comes in.

  • Nice work, man. If you've ever used Avid, do you like FCP's color correction better?

  • Whats the song here?

  • can you make a tutorial on how you color corrected this? the feel of this footage is beautiful and I'd like to know how you did it

  • This looks a lot like there was been used an adapter. The vignette around the picture lets it look like the camera records a picture on a plane (An adapter would create such a plane).

  • damn! that's why i want to have a camera. nice work dude! :D

  • I want to live in that shot at 0:49 forever.

  • why eat the plant man? lol

  • Man that was awesome, really great composition. classic ending.

  • Stupid ¡¡ (1:13)

  • How'd you get the shallow depth of field?

  • hi Joel,

what is that effect that starts on 0:09 seconds and ends on 0:14 seconds

how is somthing like that called im searching for about a year for that color effect

    thnx

  • HAHA that was awesome

  • Hey Joel, I'm trying to understand what you did to make this look so smooth, I've read the comments but didn't see. I have the HV20 as well. I'm guessing you shot in the HDV ( pf24 ) camera setting. Did you add any filters other than colour correction in FCP ?

    Thanx

  • that's sweet - one of the best I've seen of it's kind on youtube. very well done

  • What is the name of that burn effect at 0:11?

  • wow! absolutely beautiful! you've totally nailed it! (or perhaps you cheated and just rented a Panaflex for the weekend ;o) great work dude.

  • lol awsome

  • The milk in those flowers, like some cactuses, is toxic. Most milk like fluids in plants is.

He should not put ideas into young film makers heads to go eat flowers in front of the camera, no matter how cool it makes them look. :^)

  • Joel, what was the aspect ratio you used? looks like 2.39:1 ??

  • what above techniques? can you repost them? Thanks!

  • lol y did you eat that? hahah

  • FCP 5.0. post production

  • Liked the end, glad to have seen something different from this kind of a test. :) This test is perfect though! It shows me that yes, i can make my footage look good on such a cam, plus it shoots 24p. Thanks much.

  • Why the hell would you eat a weed at the end? :\

  • Schöner film :)

  • Dude thats awesome

  • warning! disturbing scene inside!!!

  • i really like your style of editing. 0:10 - 0:30, especially the first couple seconds with the color mixing, nice tone.

  • after the color correction has been done to the video how does it look up on the big tv screen?

  • aye whats the song u used here

  • Comment removed

  • Great work, superbly composed shots. Loved the sound also, very fitting. The Hv20 is certainly a great little cam.

  • soft focus soft focus....this camera can not take crisp video.

  • good enough for me

  • I tasted one of those flowers when I was a kid. I can still remember the horror. It tastes beyond bad, like medicine and poison had a child.

  • yummy

  • my question is... did you record this with some adapter?? or just the camera+color corrector??

  • hey could u do a tutorial or just explain to me what u did in color correction i have fcp 5 so if u could give me a basic idea of what u did that would be awesome! thanks

  • arent mini dvs a pain? were trying to decide which canon to get for under 700 $

  • did you use 35 mm adapter? or just the camera ?

  • This is f-ing amazing so peacefull and surreal, besides a great job on the cinematography.

  • Love the end! =D

  • haha lyked the ending! 2 thumbs up!

  • WHY THE FUCK DID YOU EAT THAT !!

  • sickk i have an hv30. Great job! I will be shooting a music video in the coming month and will be editing in FCP. DO you think you can maybe give me a brief summary of your CC settings? also, how'd you do that orange film blur thingy at the beginning?

  • Hi what focusing screen have you used? It looks like Ee-S

  • Hey. I'm "AN Open Minded Actress" and producer, writter, and director. Love the shots! Leave your contact info on craigslist so we can make some films!

  • hahahahahahahaha man whatsup with the end that was great

  • *DEAD @ the ending lolol I was like WTH, y did he eat that? LOL

  • Wonder if anyone tried this what Joe sais, man is outstanding...scholled boy... he manage to set min aperture( f1.8) in tele mode(long focal length) on hv20- amazing! And never mind for 1/2.7" sensor, he achieved a small dof!

  • Hi Joe, camera sensor is very small and with that u can't use max of optics, dof is deep and very limited. Even if u using widest aperture(in your case f1.8), effects od dof are samll, still because of small senzors of cameras, as well as u r in wide focal length for f1.8. Which is not case of your shots perspective. But hey, u r miracle! You changed the world! And u discovered conspiracy with 35mm adapter! Just buy hv20 and ask Joe, he knows...

  • Hahaha, didn't you read my reply to the comment below?

It seems that you think you know a lot about film, but let me explain something to you:

When you set the camera settings to aperture priority, you are able to manually control the aperture size (hopefully you already knew that). I then used the widest aperture possible, which allows for a more shallow depth of field. In addition to a large aperture, I also shot at a long focal length, which creates an even more shallow DOF.

  • Thank you sharing this tech info. 5 stars.

  • Hmm... so basically the 'film look' that is a natural result on a film negative is attributed to a shallow depth of field?...

Is every decent digital/HD camera nowadays capable of manual aperture size control?... Also, how do I achieve long focal length?... Pardon my lack of knowledge, but I'm very, very slow with optical stuff :(

  • By combining the above techniques, you can achieve a very shallow DOF with no adapter. I suggest you do a little more research before you post another comment claiming someone is a lair.

    SCHOOLED!

  • @JoelMorehouse , Where do you find the music playing in the background. Thanks in advance.

  • you zoom in from a distance and keep the camera on a tripod to minimize movement and hey presto, a shallow depth of field is achieved :)

  • whats effect color correction?????

  • I don't know what you mean by this.

  • @JoelMorehouse

this "green-look" i believe, that would also be my question.. :)

    thx

  • he means how did you get the colour to look like that

  • @JoelMorehouse Hes asking you what kind of color correction you did in post processing (If you did any)

  • @JoelMorehouse he fail english

  • @DrunkenBabilonia0 color correction is making sure that what say white in the footage is what white would be in real life

  • @DrunkenBabilonia0 color correction is correcting colors

  • hey, what is that effects called that starts @ 0:36, where the fps goes down and the image is sharpened?

  • 1:13 lol

  • Hey, would u mind enlightening us on how yiou achieved this?:)

Did you use a 35mm adapter in pre-production or was it all just post-production colour correction in your video editor?

  • No 35mm adapter. I just made sure to use the widest aperture possible. All color correction was done in FCP 5.0 with the 3-way color corrector.

  • Beautiful show at 0:49 seconds.

  • Thanks, that's my favorite shot as well.

  • Amazing camera.

  • Great shot man...congrats...i love it... Keep in touch. All the best.

  • ew you ate a dandilion

  • This is beatiful :)

  • i can die happy after watching this video, this is great! now to figure out how to do it in sony vegas

  • dam! loved the CC at 0:20.

  • damn why i cant never get the "film look " alike.

on vegas messing with the curves and CC.

Still.. havent got nothing near like this!

    really good footage aswell.

  • do you use a 35mm adapter and different lense? or is it all stock canon footage?

  • like it nice... love the ending!!! lol...

  • How can we put the two black bars on sony vegas or other software?

    Btw nice video!!

  • waouw....

  • That was nice man, not just another test montage of some flowers blown away by the wind...

  • hey i wna get one of these camcorders but cant get a hold ov the HV20. Jus wna kno if ne1 knows if the HV40 (the new one) is as good. sometyms the newer ones arent as good :(

    thanks

  • The HV20 isnt on the market anymore unless you buy it over the internet. The HV40 runs about 700-800 dollars

  • Yeah i've tried to hunt one down on the net but its unavailable everywhere i've checked :(

Would you say the HV40 is worth all that money because everyone keeps saying that the HV20 was good value for money -

and judging by this video, i think i would agree with them!

  • Favorite shot :43 through :53 ....excellent.

  • one of my favorites out of all the "film look test" videos i've seen...gorgous photography...keep up the great work!

  • 1:14 min x'DDDD

  • Very nice!

  • Comment removed

  • I think there's some "ghosting" at 0:49

    otherwise, looks great!

  • How did you get that colour setting? What correction did you use?

  • How did you get 2.35:1 ration. Was it post-production editing or did you use an anamorphic adapter?

  • beautiful

  • and was this filmed in cinemode, shutter prio or aperture prio...or did you just juggle? cheers dude

  • Aperture priority. I'm not sure about the cinemode though.

  • cheers man, u can't use both modes so i guess thats the answer: aperture. I just got confused by alot of dudes preferring tv mode. Thanks, good job

  • it looks really nice

  • Wow, random eating of the plant. *ingenious*

  • Will that programme work if I capture the video on the macbooks intergrated camera ? any good programs that'll work on windows that'll look good with video capture from a macbook camera?

  • Manual aperture to achieve the DOF. I should have used manual shutter on the shot with the tree in the field because the shutter speed was way too high.

  • i still can't believe that's without a DOF adapter man it looks probably the most film-look i've seen in a while off a HV. Manual aperture are we talking just adjusting it to suit the setting you in. Thanks man!

  • i REALLY LOVE UR FPS ITS VERy SMOOTH

  • i cant believe this is w/o a DOF adapter, fantastic! how did u letterbox it?

  • Nice job, it looks really good. Did you play with contrast any?

  • Just the 3-way color corrector... so yea, I guess I played with the shadows and highlights.
