  • I quite like the Manics but I don't get this cover. It adds nothing to the original, which was supercharged with emotion and had fabulous accordion.

  • both the song and James's beard

  • love it

  • Sean looks so bored here.

  • No emotion unlike the the why do a cover if your never going to better it utter shite.......

  • WOW... great rendition from a THE THE fan!

  • James seems to have taken on some kind of Orson Welles greatness with that fabulous beard!!

  • The original is a life-defining track for many people and Matt Johnson is a giant. The Manics are a great band and I guess they're just paying respect to one of their influences, so quit bitching people...

  • So funny watching the self-elected "protectors" of original versions spout their self important opinions lol

All music lives on through repetition and cover and variation and interpretation (oh, and the royalties to the original composer don't hurt either ! )

Live with it you musical neanderthals :D

  • utterly bland and emotionless crap. Classc song ruined.

  • I grew up listening to the original version by The The, in 1983. What would Mr. Matt Johnson think about this respectable cover?

  • Grim listening as usual with the manics.

  • @fuckinellitsraymo "Grim listening as usual with the manics."

Wow, you really don't know what you're talking about do you?

  • Grim listening as usual with the manics.

  • @rayclarke123 I love you too

  • @rayclarke123 It is amusing how many people suddenly remembered that they like the the. For me The Manics are (and always will be) one of the most interesting and intelligent bands in the world.

  • @aivilk AMEN

  • @rayclarke123 I do understand that (why) you don´t like their version. I´m sorry but are you sure you are 54? To tell that someone should be lined up and shot instantly is idiotic.

  • sean suits the cajon

  • One of my favourite songs ever, but I don't think the song suits his voice. It's a really introspective and comtemplative song and he sort of belts it out in his rock-y voice. yuk

  • kinda killed it :(

  • Beautiful cover, fantastic band. Manics forever!

    Chords are: C / Am / D / F (barre)

  • @harryotts1 Awesome, thanks for the chords :)

  • Matt, now it's time to bring out new material Come on!

  • this is ok but the original rocks my respect to manics a dam hard song to sing it proves one thing the manics can sing well good accoustically

  • Nicky is always better when he keeps his mouth shut! Good bass. Love the original, about time Matt Johnson brought out some albums

  • lol james. no beard, no.

  • @RTLDG What! I think it's hot :)

  • What an improvement it makes when a bass player decides to give it a go. ;-)

  • They missed it totally - never mind

  • excellent!

  • where is this from?

  • @alittlehorse from the show called The Hour (STV)

  • @aivilk thank you :)

  • @alittlehorse no problem :)

  • Hey Japsey01, I think you could think this over a bit. Matt Johnson's doing most of the time his own songs. But when the time comes when someone's doing his songs in their own way. I should be glad that he would do more of his favourite artists. He made "Hanky Panky" in the 90's with Hank Williams' songs. No one's never complained how he did the country legends songs. Songs are made to be sung by other artists. There couldn't be better than MSP to do that song. I really like Matts version very

  • sure I am pleased that the MSP are potentially opening up new listeners to Matt Johnson considering he hasn't produced any new materials for over 10 years now...Hopefully new interest in his back cataologue could prompt him to realise that he's still relevant and has an audience ...Check out his website thethe.com that has recent radio recording made made him featuring old and new material

  • @japesy01 One of the things I appreciate about them is that they have introduced (not only) me to a number of excellent bands. ... We can only hope :). ... I have already visited his website :) but thank you :).

  • Ruined a great song

  • @zaskar14 that´s your opinion, Mr. Johnson likes their version

  • @aivilk I hate to burst your bubble, but i couldn't really care less for what Mr Johnson claims to like or dislike about this version. The fact is-without any disrespect to the manics-this is in no way comparable to the original(aside from it being the same song). The original like most of Mr johnson's music, is amazing and cannot be replicated by anyone. True; that is my opinion, but anyone with an ounce of taste will tell you the same

  • @zaskar14 don´t worry, you didn´t burst my bubble :p, but i´m sick of people who say that MJ would turn over in his grave if he heard manics´ version (he clearly wouldn´t). Of course their version is not comparable to Mr. Johnson´s, but you know what, i´m glad it exists. Tbh. i have never heard about the the before (don´t think they are well-known here) but now i´m interested in their music. And it´s absurd and snobbish to say that anyone with an ounce of taste would tell me the same (as you)

  • @aivilk Fair point(s).., I would urge you to check out "Soulmining" by the the. It's not to everyone's taste-a little too electro perhaps- but the lyrics are astounding. I apologize for sounding snobbish, you're right it really is absurd to say such a thing, but that manics record really does rub me up the wrong way. That is purely my taste/opinion however. Give "Giant", "soulmining" (soulmining) and "twilight of a champion"(Infected) a listen.

  • @zaskar14 Thank you and there is no need to apologise :). I ordered Soul mining yesterday :D. I´m not a fan of cover versions but sometimes they introduce you to a fabulous artist.

  • @aivilk I would also urge you to look up "thisistheday", the the/matt johnson's web page and look up lyrics to "Heartland"

  • Matt's 3rd album "Mindbomb" is his best and perhaps the album of the late 80's with Johnny Marr making his first foray as a guest guitarist post Smiths

  • Don't like this version at all, Matt's is far superior. Check out his stripped down version "This is the day" on the thethe.com website

  • @japesy01 it should be, it´s his song :), but i like manics´ version too, i will surely check out that stripped down version :)

  • youtube.com/watch?v=nonGWDxcJNA&feature=related

  • Very brave of the manics to do this cover version, as the original is such a classic, though all credit they do it well and put their own feel to it though in all honesty you can't beat The The original.

  • mmm

I don't like James in beard...

He looks like Santa Claus :(

but like this performance and love them and him even if he has beard :)

  • Great performance, and wow James with a beard looks cool. Bring on the new compilation album and O2 gig! Love this band.

  • great acoustic as usual!

James looks more n more like Jean Reno with that facial growth hehe!

  • This acoustic version is far superior to the studio recording.

  • thank you for uploading!

James looks a bit wierd with that beard...

  • @navit123 my pleasure ;), yes. he does, to be honest i don't like it :(

  • @aivilk I don't like the mustacheץ

  • @navit123 :) nor do I

  • Thanks for sharing, wot tv show is it??

  • @2010welshy it's called The Hour
