one of my other favorite scenes which actually makes this scene more powerful was the scene where kosh is dying and is talking to him through a dream as john's father
@FuumaDarina The point was that wasn't the woman he had loved and married. She might have looked and sounded like her, but when she was implanted in a shadow ship, all traces of her were destroyed. What they tried to create was what they thought would appeal to him - a seductress, not knowing that in the end the replacement personality wouldn't have the emotional rapport needed to bring Sherriden to their side. In the end it had totally the opposite effect.
This is the best season finale I've seen on any show. So many things coalesced in this scene, and Sheridan acted like a true, heroic warrior. My heart was in my throat as Anna got closer, the nukes drew nearer, and Kosh told him to jump. The built up music was PERFECT.
dude, this cliff-hanger was HELL! It was the topic of conversation at my school the next day, it was literally all anyone would talk about, even the teachers!
Well there were short term survivors from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. I think the assumption is that Morden was like one of them, and that the Shadows are somewhat better at medical recovery technologies (including an ability to reverse radiation exposure) than us.
Don't worry, Nukes are becoming obsolete. Which in a way is scary. In 2000 the U.S. Military tested an actual laser, the Thel, successfully. No joke. It shot down an active missile traveling at mach 1. They've even started testing plasma shields. Sci-Fi is becoming reality.
Great. So they can shoot down things that they can see easily and have time to react to. Let me know when they perfect "scanner" technology and break stealth technology before I consider any of that technology seriously.
Considering missile interception via another missile is problematic at best, the ability to use a beam of charged particles (laser) to shoot said missiles is impressive as hell. Combine that with the fact that over its lifetime a laser is cheaper to field and maintain than a conventional missile launcher I don't see what you're complaining about. I don't know what "scanner" tech is but depending on what generation of stealth tech your talking about it's already been broken.
This is one of the most amazing scene I saw on TV.
First, it's the ultimate Season ending. All the cards are mixed anew and ready to be spread again.
Then, this scene validates Sheridan as a character. Here's a guy who was described as the "Starkiller", the only human able to score any victory against the Minbari. So, by this finale, the author shows us Sheridan's thinking; if you know how the enemy thinks, you can sucker-punch him. Hard.
the thingwith the 5th season of B5 was lacking b/c of the posibble cancellation of the show but TNT scooped it up for the last part. and the finale episode had claudia christian b/c they had filmed it for season for ended but since they got to do a 5th the postponed it adn used it to the end the series even though claudia had left but it was great the way it tied together. plus B5 will be forever in my memory as the best scifi show i loved wacthin it when i was younger.. thanks for the post
Aye, true that, and season 5 was more about wrapping up the loose ends of the other other four seasons more than any real storyline.
I remember staying awake every tuesday to watch this as it first aired on channel 9 at 11pm, then 12pm - it 's still my all-time favourite sci-fi series
Wow. I have to say this is probably my favourite scene, but to me 'favourite scenes' arent really what B5 was about.
People compared ST:DS9 and B5 together as 'competitors'. I think its fair to say B5 beat the hell out of ANY Star Trek. Really.
The emotional grip B5 had over me in the 1990s was intense, I loved it, but the ending of the shadow war was a bit too much, given the shadow war was THE primary storyline from the beginning. Last season was also too 'sorrowful' and kind of empty.
ahhh well you know why the 5th season was the way it was?
JMS wanted to do 5 seasons at the very beginning. And then during the beginning of the 4th season, it looked like they wouldn't be getting funded for another season. So they essentially condensed 2 seasons of stuff (end of the Shadow war, Earth war, Minbari civil war, Cartagia, etc). Then, they found out at the end of the 4th season "oh....we have funding." So JMS had to think of something for season 5 :)
Yes I heard that too. Its a shame the paper pusher admins had the influence on the creative processes to screw up the story so effectively.
It didn't detract too much though, I liked the storyline about them reclaiming earth from that shadow controlled president, Clark was it? SPOILER ALERT! ;-)
All good stuff, right back to the groundbreaking, for TV, Lightwave CGI visuals.
Its just a shame it had to all end so sorrowfuly and frankly pathetically, what with sheridans death. Didn't buy it.
I really liked the whole psi-corps storyline personally. Also the finale for Londo was really good. "The day of the dead" was also really excellent (my only real nitpick with that episode is that Kosh's voice should have come out of Lochley when she relays his message to Sheridan -- that would have been over the top awesome.)
Well, it's not - as DS9 was as "untreky" as it possibly could be.
1. Star Trek and Babylon 5 are very, very DIFFERENT genres. Star Trek was SOCIOLOGICAL show, in sci-fi like setting. Hence specific "look and feel" of the series + scientific touch. B5 is ambitious, full-blown sci-fi.
2. With all respect to Babylon 5, it share's a flaw with best Star Trek Series (TNG) - it's One (B5) / Two (TNG) Man Show. G'Kar and Picard&Data, respectively.

@AnteyPL Actually B5 was a two man show: G'Kar and Londo. G'Kar rejected the darkness and became a better person for it while Londo embraced it and it eventually led to the destruction of everything he loved.
@H3liosphan Aye, so correct... I have been a Star Trek fan from the original series I watched in the late sixties till now, but by god, B5 just went so much further emotionally than Star Trek ever did... B5 was simply powerful almost every single episode. Star Trek did have a few episodes that pulled at your heart strings, but B5 did it every episode. Amazing writing, acting and quality all round in my opinion. Staggered me so much. Truly an awesome experience in the Sci-Fi genre...
This would have to be my all time favorite scene. Though I wish more of the videos included the discussion with Mr. Garibaldi in the docking bay along with more of the video Sheridan left for Delenn.
my favorite scene will always be the one where Sheridan and Lennier share an elevator after Sheridan and Delenn spend a night in the sack, and Lennier has to witness it. Lenneirs " Woo hoo ?" is a classic.
ah yes! I love that part too :) Lennier is so awesome...I also like the part in season 1 when Garibaldi is building the motorcycle and Lennier finishes it in 1 day and gives it Minbari technology.
I just watched this a few days ago. Can't get it out of my head. How depressing this must have been when it first aired on TV all those years ago. John Sheridan battered and trapped -- makes a leap of faith, likely to his death; the white star destroyed; G'Kar's speech before the end credits.
oh yes :) I didn't start watching B5 until they were into season 5. So at the time, TNT would show the reruns from 1-4 during Monday - Friday. So I was only hanging off of a cliff for a day....and THAT sucked. So I don't know how people were able to wait longer than that :)
I remember seeing all B5 episodes when they where first aired. I remember this one and being caught in the agony of this cliff-hanger. However, when you heard the voice of Kosh telling him to jump, you knew that Sheridan would survive!
Wait wait - it did take me months to realise that the significance of Kosh's voice would mean we'd be seeing Sheridan in season 4. When that led into season 4 with the whole thing with Lorien I thought that that was absolutely great - a great series, everything that's great about sc-fi.
Oh yeah -- I watched this during its initial run over the air. That season finale was downright painful -- friends who watched it with me sought re-assurances: there must be *SOME* way that Sheridan escapes right? Right? We were desperate to cling to any hope, though it seemed illogical to conclude anything other than the fantastic Kamikazi that was presented to us. We hung on to the thread of knowing that Kosh told him to jump even though it shouldn't have mattered ...
I always feel terrible about what happens to Garibaldi though...
