This is an awesome technique! We have the same technique in Aikido. The only difference is that after you have grabbed and turned the arm you bump your leg in to there armpit to take them off balance in order to drop their level.
Excellent flowing of a standing ude gatami. This is why martial 'art' is an apt term. When performed correctly, as well as being devastatingly Mars like (Mars being the god of war, violence and battle etc) it can also be beautiful enough to be artistic.
it is a great technique,i have been trying to figure this 1 out myself by watching others and i have to say you demonstrate it excellent.thank you for the great demonstrations.
moving out of the clinch grab yea... cuz he swings his arm, and dis clip is jus showin a punch, so if i had to give it a good shot in a real fight, id say it applies to it the same way, jus make sure u do it fast enough, or if not, he'll just hug into you realizing u'll try to take him down, or go for a rib kick...

im sure there won't be any Negative comments because you help lots of people defend themselves against the school bullies (you helped me defend against them)
Id like to say that you are a good help to people, Thank you.
@Submissions101 have you ever used this lock or others simmiler in a real situation, is it one of them things you would have to drill till its second nature for it to be effective ?
@JuSKallday I've used this and variations of this lock perhaps a couple dozen times over the 16 years being a doorman. Like anything, what is hard today, is easy tomorrow. Drilling makes everything easier when push comes to shove.
i watched your video before i read this one-sided conflict. in my personal opinion, Ari's JJJ version is much more practical and swift, not to mention he included a pin, and how his instructing skills are far superior.
maybe... id suggest waitin till he does a full punck, usually if it aint a full punch and u do decide to grab it, either one of two things will happen: one, u'll get pulled with his arm or 2 he'll hold his arm their realising u heald on to it, and the full punch will folow... most probably knokin u out... so yea id suggest waitin for the full punch =]
Standing arm bar is found in almost every grappling art. I see you have a sample of the standing arm bar on your page as well....curious for a weak technique. If you have a problem with the standard arm bar, talk to a family named Gracie or go back over 1000 years in Japan,
Your posts make no sense. I didn't say I trained with the Gracie family. There are different variations of this arm bar technique. I don't understand the hostility so I won't entertain this further. I train with Eddie Bravo and Keith Owen (Pedro Sauer BB) along with JJJ. I've got mad respect for the Gracie's (see my blog post when I visited with Rorion and Rener)...taking things out of context on a you tube comment is typical and trollish. Nuff said.
I don't get it either. Been a bouncer for 14 years...go figure. Its like saying there is only one way to do an o goshi. There isn't! I've seen judo masters teach the same technique differently and with their own flair and details.
We often start our roll class from our knees, can this be executed from the knee or is there another variation for such situation? I'd like to surprise my sparing partner who often leads with outstretched arms.
I have a martial arts club at my school and being a traditional hapkido guy, its very difficult to teach hapkido to people who dont know the basics. but since i have the basics, your videos are fantastic for me. I can teach these techniques effectively to people who dont necessarily have ju jutsu backrounds. thanks alot for posting this stuff guys. it really helps
I want so see more "Bar" situation defense. Because people that fight in bars are not likely to be alone, always like 2 or more. How do i win time, and I don't want to have my arms locked so i cant quick save my head from another attack. I know holding people in lines is good protection against contemporary/synchronized attacks but any tactic if you already got in to it?
lol, why after the video did it suggest martin scorcese winning an oscar and then charlie chaplin winning an honorary oscar. maybe they knew Jiu Jitsu. sometimes youtube is sucky. at least these videos always brighten my day. thanks ari, ude gatami? udeman!
I have used this in fights before but with a slim difference. Instead of grabbing the wrist with my inside hand i interlock my thunb with his and grab his inner palm...i find it gives a much more aggressive twist and it prevents them from closing their hand which cause excrutiating pain to the underside of the forearm. what do you think of this technique?
for all those who think the uke is getting abused. in jujitsu the uke goes with the move to avoid injury when the lock hits a point of pressure you go with it. jujitsu is the gentle art it can be done with control so you don't injure your opponent but you can control the sittuation
Not to talk trash or bash, but idk if he was doing it on purpose or the other guy did something to deserve it, but the demonstrater looked like a complete douche when the guy kept tapping and he didn't remove full pressure. Especially since it was the same arm getting abused lol.
Laugh-Tristan is fine (the uke). It is apart of the Japanese Art, to keep your opponent right on the edge, not to let up, but not to go too far. It is the essence of the pin and constant pressure. I assure you that no douchbaggery was intended ;-)
Question sir: I'm 5'9", is it possible to effectuate this move on a person taller than myself? (seeing as how his arm wouldn't be at a 90 degree angle)
praktishthai... yeah, the essense of Judo, Japanese Jujitsu and BJJ is that smaller and less heavy opponents can use techniques to dominate bigger opponents... However there's always exception (imagine if the guy wrist is twice your hand lol). I have used this move against plenty of heavier oppponents and it worked fine, but i used a punch or kick in the groins before going on with the technique. Also i am 5.9 166 pounds, i have thrown 6 foot 240 pounds people over my shoulder in training
"It is apart of the Japanese Art, to keep your opponent right on the edge, not to let up, but not to go too far."
This was another thing I was very pleased to see. It is a bad habit to let off completely from uke because he taps - don't train yourself to ease off your opponent - sympathy is a weakness in real combat!
this way of doing is to prevent you to go on the ground, where you might be vulnerable to other opponents or your ''victim''. With this, you can control the opponent with a fair view of your environment and an easy way to get back on your feet
If you step back with your back leg while you grab the arm you disrupt any strike thrown at you while slightly pulling the aggressor off-balance making it easier to execute the rest of the submission. I hope that my suggestion helps to cause some poor bastard a world of pain (Just kidding.......sort of).
around 32 seconds his arm his bent and he corrects himself for the video and extends his arm as he steps away from you. what do you do if his elbow his bent and he grabs at your neck like that?
It typically doesn't matter because the pulling and rotating usually extends the arm. But like all combat, nothing is 100% and you have to have the ability to change your tactics at a moments notice to adjust to the real world dynamics of fighting.
dude this awesome .. thanks for uploading and keeping things free! .. once taken down id just mount him and punch him in the ears and the back of the neck ..

I am only human and I've been bashed and punched over the years let me tell you!!! The psychological game is just as important as the physical one and that is what gives old dog's the edge ;-)
10th planet is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu yes. But Ari(the instructor in the vid) is also a Black Belt in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu thats where the technique comes from. Its also practiced in Akido and Hapkido so you are correct as well. Hope that clears it up for you.
