  • larry mullen is as passionate as bono, without ever showing it, as he is, and the fact he is behind the drums!! just an amazing band, who, i hope, we will never see again, as there is only one u2!!

  • that's "boiled" grapefuit =)

  • Thanks man, brings back awesome memories. back in 1987 when they started their US tour, the band stayed at a resort that I was a room service waiter at. They were there a week and I met them all. Saw the first show and Bono was having throat problems so the vocals were off, (the boil grapefruit peelings liquid that I delivered didn't help that much) =) but still a great show!

  • Wow I had never seen this before. Didn't know it existed. Just great old stuff.

  • so what if they did

  • what i dont understand is that if this song is about his friend that died, why does he sing a verse about a south american communist?

  • me too

  • i am having this song played at my funeral!

  • watching that great bit of footage from 89 your seeing a band at their live physical peak....bonos voice is effortless and larry is a powerhouse in motion so fluid...one thing age will never hinder is edges astounding guitar sound.....he goes threw about 5 contrasting sounds and styles that is never indulgent but just maps out the emotion of the record....i cant think of many guitarists who has that range and sonic contribution.... check out epic new song, disappearing act for more classic U2

  • Well said.

  • one of the best U2 songs ever!!!!!

  • greg carroll rode bono's m/cycle because he was to drunk, a legend like a long line of kiwi's!!!

  • My dad was at this concert in Tempe in 1987 when this song was filmed live! What an old awesome dad......

  • lucky guy!

  • Yeah I forgot to tell you guys this but the guy that said that was my dad on my youtube account. so yeah that is not me.

  • one of the few bands that are as good live as in the studio .......love em to bits

  • This video is awesome, glorious time, and i want more from the rattle and hum outtakes, help me....somebody!!!

  • The song is about an assistant to Bono who was killed while delivering his motorcycle in the rain.

  • No.. they named the show "One tree hill" taking inspiration to the song.. moreover, the show was born in 2003.. the album "Joshua tree", which includes this song, was recorded in 1987.

  • i'm a grown man.i rarely ever cry... this song breaks me down, and tears come 2 my eyes. god its just so deep.

  • 4:00 best part of the song

  • I saw them play this second night in tokyo last tour. I couldn`t believe it, the absolute highlight of the night. U2`s most underrated song, a real gem.

  • this song is what made me a U2 fan!

  • I love the harmony at the end. Edge! Yes!

  • wow. i hate that i was born in 1990. what a voice. U2 at their best.

  • This is my all time fave U2 song but brings me 2 tears as it was my late dads fave on JT. Jesus its nearly 19 yrs sincehe died but always in my heart DAD :)

  • wow, my Dad died less than a month ago and i still cry, but this was the song i was lookinf for...a little peace..... love you Tony!

  • My Dad died 10 years ago.

  • oh my...

    bono with voice!

    those were the days...

  • 2:59 NEED MORE COWBELL!

  • Respect!

  • This song just absolutely kicks ass.

  • Unfortunately Bono cannot sing this song in this level of intensity anymore. Specifically the vocal part at 3:57 and also his voice was just more rich and pure back then. Age is everyone enemy.

  • The Joshua Tree in 1987!!! The best

  • Yep they always sing it NZ, back home ...its to Greg who was their roadie or road manager he got killed in an accident. He was born and raised in Whakatane U2 came to NZ and along with his family they buried him there. U2 regard this song as sacred and will only be played in NZ or where they deem it right.

  • This is where I live in New Zealand. I will hear this song when I die.

  • yeaaa kiwis !

  • Saw this tour in October 1987 Toronto Canada......very cold night by lake Ontario, but still a brilliant show.....don't like them anymore though....they had their time which i think peaked on this album

  • timeless song, one of my favorite of all time, man I hope they play this in Boston in September!

  • This song is in the TOP TEN of U2...

    Forever in my heart!

  • Joshua Tree=MASTERPIECE that I *never* get tired listening to.

  • You will never see Bono sing this song again. The vocal range is too hard for him to reach nowadays. And he lacks the passion to sing this type of song.

  • He was definitely in his prime during this era, but you gotta give him some credit - he has been singing his heart out for 50 years. And he has the passion, it's just in different places than it was 20 years ago.

  • I wasn't trying to demean Bono. I completely understand why he sings the way he does now. Its a combinations of age, wear tear and his heavy smoking that slow him down from being more passionate. The point of my comment was to reminisce in how wonderful his voice was back in his youth & that I wish it was like that now. And of course it can never be like that again. Nonetheless Bono sings great considering all the strain his voice has went through.

  • I think they'll always sing it when they go to NZ, which they did for the two shows there in '06 (not to mention one of the Japan shows). They also played the first verse at the Oakland show I attended in Nov 2005, the first time they'd played it live in about 15 years. That night it was dedicated to a woman who had been killed on 9-11, requested by her husband, who was in attendance that night. Can't get any more passionate than that. ;-)

  • Yeah U2 wrote dis song 4 my country Yeah its made about One Hill in New Zealand.

  • by the way . u2 sounded so much better in 1987/88 than they do now .(Live that is)

  • there is a mention of greg carroll on the joshua tree album notes . I have the tvnz video that they made especially for kiwis that has a little bit of footage of u2 attending his funeral .

  • yep best song

  • Probably best U2's song

  • It does not get any better that this song. Every emotion that a song can pull from you, this one does. Even the guitar makes me weep. RAIN...RAIN....

  • Just PERFECT.

  • I saw a comment asking what the song was about - so -

Greg Carroll whom Bono mentions at the start is the guy he wrote it for - a Kiwi roadie who was actually running an erin for the band on his motorbike when he was tragically killed! the song is a permanent part of their set when they tour New Zealand!

Greetings to my Kiwi mates from Dublin, Ireland:)

  • "errand"

  • A distant 2nd to 'With or Without You' (from Rattle and Hum) as U2's best live song ever!!!

  • Lovely, from the heart.

  • NICE!!!

  • it still amazes me with such dark lyrics mainstream fans can consider them a 'pop rock' group,go figure....just listen to this for an example

  • this is the song that made me a U2 fan

  • i think it was released in japan too instead of bullet the blue sky.

  • it was released as a single but only here in new zealand because thats were greg came from , he was bonos right hand man.

  • i love this version more cowbells please

  • The Rhythym kicking in at 1:51 gives me chills..just an incredible union of sound.

  • amazing performance, surprising they never released this as a single, it is a brilliant, powerful performance.

  • I don't understand why they didn't release this as a single....Ii think 'With or Without You' was one of their worst songs.

    Larry = Underrated

  • Bono in the days he was bussy doing what he's good in..music. not like today sudly

  • bono quand tu nous tienssssssssssssss

et j Adore la serie tiree du titreee!!!!

  • des places a ganer pour le concert francais sur NRJ

  • class

  • Lucky you! I love NZ my hubs from Chch

  • I play this on my ipod everytime I visit One Tree Hill in Auckland NZ!!!!!

  • I was just there on the weekend...amazing view of the Easter show and surrounding lights..

  • what can i say about this song????

    amazing!!

    beatiful!!!

    incredible!!!

i don't know if there are enough adjectives to express this feeling.

  • Your an idiot!

  • I feel sorry for you, freak.

  • Wow-I'm a whore and a druggie? Considering I've only been with one guy in my entire life (married for 22 years) and have never even taken an unnecessary aspirin, I'd say that's quite a feat!!

    (PS-it's "you're" a whore, not "your"....duh)

  • Algien conoce la marca de la camisa de the ege?

  • i fucking love this song

  • i was at this show in December of '87 ticket prices were $5.00 per head ,truly a magical evening

  • perfection

  • My fave song on the album. Never got the exposure it desearved. Thanx 4 the U2YouTube to add to my library of epic songs of all time

  • Why the heck wasn't this on Rattle & Hum?? Best song ever.

  • Rattle & Hum the Movie, you idiot....! Get a clue!

  • Yeah dude..who looks like the idiot now?

  • I was about to say the same thing.

  • Is a pity that this song has never been able to demonstrate their potential in direct, first because Bono wasn´t the cries of the end as in the disc, and then because they have not returned to play more, yet for me is in my U2´s top 5,sorry for my english.

  • Powerfull music quality on this vid, thanks for sharing!

  • great!

  • I was born in the 1940s and I consider this an epic.

  • yea pretty good band and the songs like this and several others will always stick with me just powerful stuff. if only bono could complete his task and save the world and get back to being a rockstar.

  • This song was written for a new zealander, good on ya u2

  • It's OK, Split Enz may have written a song about a dead Irishman, too.

  • Slash?

    you mean edge?

  • These guys are WAY too cool...and they don't even have to try! FAVE song of all times....

  • fantastic!

  • From 3:57 -4:12 Bono cannot sing or reach those levels anymore. Its almost like screaming. Its ridiculous high range level.

  • hehe, Slash kinda looks like Chuck Norris at a glance!

  • slash? u mean the edge

  • cant wait to see them just down the road from my house in croke park DUBLIN,they always play their best to their own people

  • I love this song it has so much soul and heart. One of my alltime fav's. U2 is incredible.

  • Bono : Greatest frontman ever.

Even Elvis Presley looks pale compared to him.

Did you hear that scream at 3:58 ? Awesome !

  • The Joshua Tree..

    Nothing can beat that one..

  • So this band has been loved for XXX years - and you are X years old!!

Wait until you are 65 and see to what music you are listening.

Before you criticise , learn the history to this song - it is a tribute.

  • Great song writting

  • Greates band in history.

  • What a voice

  • turn away to face the cold enduring chill as the day begs the night

the sun so bright it leaves no shadows only stars

you run like a river runs to the sea

  • One of the best songs off that album... and that's saying a lot.

  • ...and his blood still cries... from the ground...it runs like a riverrrrr to the C

  • TY for the post.. the lyrics say it all

  • one of the best albums ever up there with the white album

  • Speaking as a "fossil", singing about a loss never lessens the pain, Father nor Friend.

  • This is one of my favorite songs (Any Band) of all time. Does anyone else with this taste in music know some other unknown gems you could share with me?

  • If you like unknown gems by big name artists try listening to Lost In The Flood by Bruce Springsteen from his 1st album

  • Great call JVergura. Amazing song...

  • one of the best live performances of all times ...from the times u2 were music makers...

  • I agree with red hill, I've never heard that song live actually

  • Yes they Have and I was there since Day 1 U2 first came here

  • superb

  • I Love U2, I Love Bono's Voice, & This is my favorite song. But..BONO is SO full of himself....Does he really think the band needs his cue at 3:12?

  • Bono voice at its best

  • Yes...a higher vibrational song.

    U2!

    one

  • The Edge is My Hero <3

  • Sometimes artists strike a vein of Truth and Beauty that elevate your life to higher planes.

Lyrically, muscially, this song is the essence of the music of U2. Can't imagine my life without it.

  • Thats really beautiful, your words have power and empathy. Its one of my favourite U2 songs ever, a wonderful tribute to Greg Carrol their Maori friend.

  • I could use more cowbell...........

  • i agree. this song reminds me of so much through my life growing up. Good and bad.

  • the best song of the joshua tree´s album!! so emotional!!!

  • One of my favourites.

  • pure class

  • There is nothing these guys have done that I didn't like so I'm planning on enjoying the new album.

  • Only 200,000 views? DOESN'T THE WORLD KNOW WHAT IT IS MISSING OUT ON?

  • true.why this song (and lots of U2 songs)only have a few views and others like mariah carey have millions??!!

  • and what's worse is,that they didn't even include this on the rattle and hum video....

this, along with red hill and mothers of the disappeared, are lost classics

  • The world today is listening to crap music.

  • traxx11270, please for everybody's hapiness... GET A LIFE !

  • Sometimes artists strike a vein of Truth and Beauty that elevate your life to higher planes.

Lyrically, muscially, this song is the essence of the music of U2. Can't imagine my life without it.

  • well said EHKH. When Im down this lifts me up....Greg Carol RIP

  • I absolutely LOVE this track...its like something from another world...like so many other U2 songs,,,its actually dedicated to a staff member & friend of U2 from New Zealand who was killed in a car crash!

I prefer the studio version on the Joshua Tree album though

  • PRICELESS.

  • simply one of the best u2 live performance

  • i really, really, love it

  • No, that was not a joke!

I am aware that this song came out before the show, I never said it didnt!

The creator Mark Shawn named the show after this song! Alright? So why dont you get a life? All I said was one tree hill is the best show in the world, and it is!

  • This is my favorite U2 song...I wish I could have seen it live. I agree that Bono is full of himself..but the dude can flat out sing. Larry Mullen is very underrated..he is excellent.

  • YES THE J TREE ON DVD

  • Awesome song! and I love Edge's hat:)

  • Wonderful version of this beautiful, very special song!I love The Edge...he's so cool!!

  • Um lindo classico de joshua tree, Perfeito!

  • never heard this song played live. Where can I get a copy of this song?

  • the josuia tree

  • You mean The J tree on the rereleased dvd?

  • The original was available on the J Tree album.

As for the Live Version, I'm not sure, as I don't think it got onto R&H.

  • It's important to note that Greg was more than just a roadie, he was actually a personal friend of the band as well.

  • oh my God.....

  • "And when it's raining, raining hard. Thats when the rain will break my heart". It was raining the night Greg was killed. haunting lyrics. best band ever.

  • Sorry man, rated poor by mistake. Otherwise, great comment

  • care to say why?

  • One Tree Hill mentions "Jara sang his song a weapon ... refers to Victor Jara -who was a songwriter who voiced his opinion against the US backed government of Pinochet. For his "crime" he was viciously tortured and murdered . Victor Jara stadium in Santiago Chile is named after him.
