An outside tan is way easy to hook around and has no real commanding strength. That is essentially a tan dar you are speaking of. Because the roundhouse is already off your centerline you can't then go even farther outside to it's outer gate without falling over. You can't use a tan to block it on the inside either (pisses me off to see so many sifus teaching that). Use the bil sau hand... or gun fu. ;-)
