A lot of people are commenting as to why he didn't just go and wait for the guy. Earlier in the movie his wife was complaining how he didn't defend her when another man was feeling her up. That was to show that he was a timid man, very unconfrontational.
When at the restraunt I would have went out to his truck and started pulling wires. If he came out and said anything I would have kicked his ass all over the parking lot!
Best scene I would like to advance a new hypothesis regarding this movie - that the truck is a figment of David Mann's subconscious mind. It may sound crazy at first glance, but Spielberg has actually given many clues indicating this - in almost every scene, actually. From the first radio talk show broadcasts to the Chuck's Cafe scene (where the driver is apparently never in the cafe to begin with) to the driver's door of the truck being open when it... well, spoiler alert, but you get the idea
How much you wanna bet that was the truck driver at 1:30 I could be wrong but he was wearing cowboy boots, which means he was probably wearing a cowboy hat.
That waiter who made that smart-ass remark was very rude! WHere are people's manners?? Hello? And he is supposed to be a PROFESSIONAL. WOW, talk about low class.
Here's a tactic -- if the evil driver is perversely determined to follow the good driver the good driver should wait at thte bar and see who stays while the others come and go, while the truck is still parked outside.
This story/movie was the inspritation for Stephen King's "Trucks" aka Maximum Overdrive. Except those trucks were haunted and not driven by crazy drivers
In this scene, two guys drive their trucks just after sipping beer at Chuck's Cafe. Isn't it illegal to drive vehicles after drinking? There is also a scene that David Mann fastens his seatbelt in preparation for the final duel with the truck driver trying to kill him although he doesn't seem to put on it except the time. In Japan we have had to fasten the seatbelts while driving by law since1985, and of course drunken driving is strictly prohibited. How about driving rules in USA?
@MurphyColeman People in America can have up to a certain amount of alcohol (1-2 drinks ususally) which shows up as A (acceptable) on breathalizers. It's called the "legal limit". As for driving w/o seatbelts, this is the country where you see less police on the roads, and most movies do not show people buckling up to increase the element of danger. And coolness.
@MrStillmans I'm sorry that I couldn't contact you as soon as you thanksfully gave me the comment. I don't intend to blame USA for being rude to driving rules. The way of thinking about rules depends on places. According to a newspaper, in America there are some states where you don't have to put on a helmet when riding a motorcycle. The article says it is because that the nation forces individuals to do something is considered the violation of human rights in USA.
Yes it's illegal (within a limit), but srink driving is especially bad in the US. The population themselves are lax about it even if the police are not.
@inkstersco According to a survey, only a can of beer adversely affect how we drive our cars(for example, when to push the brake pedal, how to control the wheel.....) even though we don't recognize that. In Japan which is my country, beer-like beverages containing 0.00% alcohol have been popular since a leading beer maker Kirin started selling this kind of drink in April, 2009 for the first time in the world.
It's comments like that from that sh*t head of a waiter at 0:03 that people don't tip. That waiters sarcastic comment just costed him a couple of bucks. That'll learn ya, you sarcastic SOB!
Although....I noticed that Dennis Weaver didn't pay for his meal anyway lmao
I love this movie and this scene especially(which is not included in the other download on here) and I hate to be picky, but since all of his monologue is going on inside of his head, why is he whispering?
This whole sequence in the diner is evidence of Spielberg's mastery at psychological expression -- as fun as the action scenes are, this part of the film is always my favorite.
I was 10 when this first aired on tv. This diner scene even more than the chase scenes had my brain and stomach doing back flips. This is what suspense is all about. Dennis Weaver is the perfect "everyman". A true classic!
My opinion on this scene is I don't think the trucker was even inside the cafe. cause if you watch everyone in there, only two of the guys leave. The one with the brown shirt that was parked next to the truck and the guy that David Mann trys to pick a fight with (which ends up being the wrong guy). Then the truck starts up and leaves after that.
why didnt he just ask

@betweenthreeislands he spells rye because rye sounds like pie. so he could have been ordering cheese on pie. thats why he spelled it.
