If we buy our tires, toothpaste, cars, clothes, diapers, ketchup, soup, prepared green (bag) salad and TVs from factories, why not allow the farmer to use economy of scale and distribution models to produce cheap food for the US. With over 300 million people to feed, we will need more concentrated food production rather than less as Katie proposes.
Oh and dont bite the hand that feeds you. Sure you can ask it to do something else but youll surely die if it falls! Even animals understand this concept.....
Ya know it really frustrates me that people such as Katie Couric use the media to basically bash the farmer and not discuss the other side of the story. If we are to change agriculture then we need to change many other industries and ideals. With less than 2% of the American population still farming as a full time job, they still produce enough food for themselves and over 200 other people. Dont blame the farmer for causing people tobe over weight when people are too lazy to get off their rears!
I believe it time for America to end the Cheap food policy. Food should triple in price. Then maybe we all can produce organic & mine our soils. We all should go back to the 1920's The cities included. Not Just Farmers !
Timing is in order to pass H.R. 1549/S. 619, Non farmers want to tell farmers how to raise their livestock. If someone has a lifetime of experience in a profession someone outside does not know more than he does. I only use antibotics for treatment but I do not want that option taken away. Just as I would not take away antibotics from your children when they are needed.
Seem like anymore that reporters are only allowed to report on one side of an issue. Why don't they provided fair balanced reports with all the facts so that the viewer can decide for themselves. Since when did we decide that reporters should tell us what is right and wrong?
Last week we had ABC throwing fits over docked tails on dairy cattle, now this week we have Katie Couric and CBS having a hissy fit over the use of antibiotics in meat animal production. Part of the goal is to create momentum, in order to pass H.R. 1549/S. 619, which would ban the routine use of antibiotics. Will the slander never cease?
Livestock Producers do not just pump antibiotics into livestock. They follow the correct administration and withdrawl time. Also, they wouldn't give more antibiotics than necessary as this would cost more to the producer.
If you think there is alot of profit in pork production, Go ahead and feed them antibotics. I hope you start a hog farm. Maybe I can buy you out when you exhausted the money supply. We are not totally antibotic free. but we use it when the vet prescribes the medicine. YOU ARE RIGHT, NO FARM JUST PUMPS ANTIBOTICS INTO THEIR FARM ANIMALS. Just as my children, if needed they will get it. But not for a common cold !
Katie is absolutely an idiot, and anyone who believes this sh#$ is an idiot. They should quit eating pork, it will make it cheaper for those of us that like our bacon! Antibiotice transferred through the air? You have got to be kidding me!! hhahahah I laughed for ten minutes after seeing this crap.
The reason pigs grow faster is they do not fight the enviroment. I have 25 years of data. They grow to market weight in 124 to 150 day verus 150 day to 190 days for outdoor raised with less anitbotics. 5% less death/culls. I found out (9 out 10) do not want pasture raised pigs ! I would be out of business. As I say NUMBERS SPEAK !
If numbers speak for themselves, Why when I raised pigs outdoor (pasture) my death - cull was over 9% with vet-meds over $7.50 per animal. (25 years of data)
Sorry to say we quit that system. My customer (9 out of 10) prefer modern raised in enviromental controlled building. This type of building (you call factory - husband & wife will feed out 12,000 hd a year) our death cull rate is less than 2.5%, Our vet-meds are less than $2.40 per animal with virtually no antibitics. $5 less than outdoor
Read the upcoming book by John Joseph titled "Meat is for Pussies" where he shines some much needed light on the food industry. It is disgusting what corporations will do to get a buck. I read an article about the process of milking cows...an article by a dairy farm explaining the process of the machines used to milk, I haven't drank milk since. Further research exposed the "scab, skin, blood & puss" level allowed in milk...Disgusting. You are born with a BMW, don't treat it like a beater...
I agree, but just because YOU are responsible it doesn't mean everyone is. Especially factory farms...who a lot are run by corporations & whose bottom line is profit, not quality.
And on the milk issue...yeah, obviously Grade A would be cleaner but are you really going to say there are no foreign bodies in Grade A? And why does a pig farmer care if I drink milk?
Maybe if big corporations and fast food providers were more responsible real farmers wouldn't be affected by the antibiotic issue.
No I'm not a dairy farmer, But my dad was a dairy farmer. I know the rules they have to follow. There are supprise audits 3 to 4 times a year. any one time violation they either have to dump the milk until they meet health codes. I don't remember what the parts per million is, But it amounted to less than the size of a pencil eraser in a semi load of milk. Also they test daily for antibotics.
Just like hogs. We are tested 25 out every 100 for antibotics. If caught for antibotics we can not sell for 30 days, then only allowed to sell 10 hogs. Every hog is tested for 90 day. If a second violation accures. you are not allowed to sell for 6 months. A violation like that Will Put You Out of Business.
Antibiotics keep sick animals out of the food chain.

The $2.40 - 1/2 is vaccines. $0.40 is vet consolation.

You are looking at Class 2 milk, Not Grade A. Get the facts
