@janeajuve Nope... it's called protopunk... they never defined their style as "punk rock" nor do bands usually refer to themselves as part of any certain genre.. If you're searching for any non-mainstream music that has gilded with age you should really read about it and not be prejudiced.
@ccomets23 this is an amazing song and right now my ten year old daughter is absolutely enthralled with it. she loves patti smith which i think is so cool
I saw her live in a bar ..I sat in a booth--on mushrooms--a mistake ...
I heard it all..but, I dont remember anything but excited emotions and extreme incredulous gratitude at my opportunity at being right there with her there
20 feet away. She was peaking--box office wise--then, also..so this was HER choice--a bar concert..
my friend who stuttered stopped stuttering during this "high time"..she said Halucinogins did that To her ..and that was secondary to that Patti experience:)
Dammit its 2011 and I am still listening to this, what a great song! Patti Smith is such a huge inspiration for me, my band and all female vocalists out there. If you can find it in your hearts please check out my band Hey You we are pop/punk band and have a video out and would really appreciate any input you have:)
An amazing collection of ultrapretentious fake pseudopoetry. Cheap imitations of Dylan, Reed and Rimbaud. I'd prefer Jim Morrison anyday- He at least had some originality...
@MemphisBlueAgain "The Doors? Jim Morrison? He's a drunken buffoon posing as a poet. Give me the Guess Who. They've got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic. "
@mistersnaredrum Alots of poets actually are drunkards so that's not an argument. A buffoon? The whole Greenwich Village where ol' Patti came from is a joke. I would have to look hard for anyone who thinks she is a great poet. But I admit she is very popular amoung senior punkers and emos. She's just a blown up anorexic.
@MemphisBA finally... poetry have judges!! I miss those days when free common people DID THE RESEARCH OF THEIR OWN SOULS (now we have books, and critics -who quite oftenly have big lack of talent-, and cool, and sane, lists, etc), THEY GAVE NOT A FUCK about the "old-haters" who just seemed to look for the so-called mistakes and fails.
Today we just seems to have a remedy of life!!! (now is not sane to do drugs but war)
This world needs more "pseudo-poets" than "super-critics"...clever-asses?
Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe are very essential links to the current music scene and musicians obession with using S&M in videos and concerts to entice viewers.
The rock group Rammstein is just an commercialized glorification of the same genre of lifestyle art that Robert Mappelthorpe originated.
The only difference is that Rammstein ripps off other artists and then ruins any real message in their work.
Patti and Robert are the original provocatuers of deep thinking and mindfulness.
listening to this song, hurt, philadelphia streets and antony and the jonsons all at the same time is so surreal and strangely beautiful, disconcerting, terrifying and strange.
@nachostereo I've been listening to this album for so long and trying to turn other people on to her, but you're the first person to be enough into her, that you knew what the actual title to this anthem is. Thank you.
Read her memoir "Just Kids"- you'll get the Dylan, Morrison, Joplin and Todd Rungren connections, plus her foundation as a visual artist with fellow brilliant artist Robert Mapplethorpe as they reacted and took over the scene from Warhol's Pop 60's and became the major influence that led to the nihilst/Punk 70's- a must for any student of late 20th Art....(apologies if this sounds a little pompous..., but Patti is the Poet Laureate for the millenium transition)

Patti is a great woman, and very inspirational:) I'm reading her book 'just kid's'and i'm just over halfway through.. I find her amazing spirit for life inspiring & the little thing's she say's that show without meaning to how thoughtful and caring a person she is. So talented in more way's than many... I feel like i'm prying into her life whilst reading the book but this is obviously what she is giving to all... such different day's she grew up in & such great day's she made of them..
I was 16 when this was released. I bought it. My hippie art teacher said it was demonic. That's when I knew it was good. I've also met her. She's very sweet.
@bruce369able I met her in a random encounter while walking home on Market St. in SF. I saw her come out of this store called Crystal Path. I did a double take and she was so sweet. I was a blubbering fool. I first heard her in 1974 in my home town which was a hick place. She held my hand to her heart as I blubbered on. Her son Jackson was with her and she introduced me.
Johnny comes from a character in William Burroughs' work "The Wild Boys." This piece demonstrates Patti's ability to put herself into a situation, and to identify with a boy being raped. He envisions horses in a dissociative experience. Patti's flow is so stunning and remains so to this day.
The Schwabinger Zeben, bottles on every table with candlesticks flowering into elaborate wax bouquets n patti thundering out of every corner - horses, horses, horses - n everybody out of their heads, laughing like craaaazeeey. Because the night belonged to lovers.
@rubentherude the only person who Patti wanted to have a baby with was Robert Mapplethorpe but alas, he was gay! She loved him in a romantic sense, he loved her like his sister.
